Carol in Cal.
I would invite him, because once people start not inviting family things just get uglier and uglier, blah blah blah. I'd hire the off duty cop, and he would be in plain clothes and clued about watching the hell out of this guy. I'd be clear in the invitation that no food or other ingestants may be brought in, and the first time the guy pulls something out of his stash he'd be either bounced or arrested. Period. ETA: No, wait, not period; rather, exclamation point! Edited September 8, 2016 by Carol in Cal.

Seasider
Said person will bring in booze and pot. Because they feel entitled. Event will be a family friendly event with neither allowed. Booze and pot? Not only would I not invite this person, I would hire a private duty officer to escort him away from the premises should he decide to appear. Ok, maybe the officer is overkill, but I feel pretty strongly about the type of person you describe. Plus I have an obnoxious family member and have been daydreaming about what to do with that person when I have a kid getting married who doesn't want to be mortified at her own wedding.
LucyStoner
How would this dude bro like to be marched out of there by a girl? I volunteer to come and act as your bouncer. I don't take bullshit, I don't mind being called names by twerpy misogynists and I pack pretty mean punch should it come to that. :P Edited September 8, 2016 by LucyStoner
SKL
I like the idea of hiring a cop if you can afford it. Besides encouraging the idiot to behave, it takes the pressure off of you if he makes a dumb choice. Also, you probably aren't the only person who won't be glad to have him there. I'm guessing it would be a relief to his wife (among others) if someone held him in check for a change.

Bluegoat
I think family culture can really vary about inviting difficult family members. On my dad's side, it would just not be done to exclude one person unless it was totally and shockingly egregious. The uncle who will show up stoned, probably drink too much, and mouth off, will be invited. OTOH my mom's family more regularly has little feuds where people don't talk. TBH, I think I prefer the former, the latter is much more wearing and in the end I think maybe even more immature, despite the fact that the first group is to all appearances the far more dysfunctional group of people. I wouldn't disinvite someone because he was a jerk, or even a drunk. But I think trying to manage controlled substances at a family event is totally legitimate.
JustEm
Said person will bring in booze and pot. Because they feel entitled. Event will be a family friendly event with neither allowed. If this is the case then I would not invite them at all and make it very clear that if they show up they will be asked to leave or the authorities will be called. It is one thing to show up and be a pay in the ass but to change the atmosphere of the party altogether with things not appropriatr for a family friendly function and illegal(assuming the pot is) is something I wouldn't tolerate Bo matter the relationship.

And if I can trim the budget enough, and all expense paid trip... I had the pleasure of seeing this person the other day. I had suspected they were targeting me before, now I am beyond positive. Another thread. Going to be an interesting party since most of my friends share your views, Katie, just not all are as vocal in a social situation like this. Some are in his field or are in an interrelated/interdependent field. He could open his mouth and unknowlingly commit carreer suicide. Hmmm, maybe I should rethink this let him bring in his own flask... But no pot.
