newlifemom
Ummm, suburban brat here wants to know. . . What are wheat berries?:001_huh:
G5052
We also do Breadbeckers because I buy a lot for my baking projects and their quality is better than what I get through the other natural food co-op I belong to. Unfortunately grain is very heavy in bulk, so it's good if you can find others buying it that way.
ma23peas
Soft White, Hard Red...those words meant nothing to me until I started grinding my own wheat for bread! :) Wheat berries are the different types of wheats used to make bread..you lose something like 70% of the nutritional berry after 72 hours...so more folks are grinding their own wheat..I don't do it all the time, but boy it does taste so much better! :) Tara
kokotg
I buy them from Breadbeckers because I live about 15 minutes from them :) ...I haven't compared prices to see if they would still be the best deal if I were paying shipping. Vida Winter
Try you local food coop or health foods store. You don't want to mail order (unless it's a last resort) because it would cost so much to ship them. ~D
FloridaLisa
I just bought a *stock* bucket of soft white from my Bread Beckers coordinator. It was $61.00 and change! Are wheat berries from Y2k still good? I have a friend who had loads last I checked. Lisa

Blueridge
As far as the freshness of berries...they can actually last a lifetime if stored properly. I read somewhere that Kamut berries were originally found inside Egyptian tombs...they took them and actually sprouted some! Amazing, that wheat. Sara R
Yes. I've used 30-40 year old wheat (handed down from dh's grandma). It was indistinguishable from fresh wheat.
Sara R
LDS Home Storage centers sell wheat very inexpensively. In normal times they sell to the public. In times of high demand/panic they sometimes only sell to LDS members. Honeyville Grain is another good store. Their shipping is only $4.50 per order, if I recall correctly. KayT
LDS = Church of the Later Day Saints I read somewhere yesterday that the LDS canneries were out of wheat, it may have been only in that person location. The LDS close to us only sells to LDS people and not the public. So that leaves us out. I buy wheat at out local health food store and order my soft from Bobs Red Mill online. The have great service. I always have received my order fast!
