lynn
My ds is 20, working and going to school. He's starting to accumulate personal paperwork he needs to learn to keep up with. I am considering getting him a locking file folder box to stay organized with it all. Car registration, maintenance records, school paperwork, banking, ss card etc. Plus he's moving out soon so that's why I am looking at something locking. So to practical, get it another time or give it for Christmas?
MEmama
I think practical is appreciated at that age. :)
catz
My kids have received a combo of practical and fun gifts for Christmas since birth. I think that's a good idea! :)
TammyS
The only possible downside I see is, if he's at school, will he have room to keep it at his dorm? Otherwise, I think it's a great gift.
Pegasus
If financially feasible, I'd upgrade the gift to a fireproof box. Great gift idea actually! I may borrow the idea.
Rebel Yell
(I have a 20yo) Very practical. Upgrade it to fireproof. If you give it as a Christmas or birthday gift, include a small "fun" gift inside (if you're not also buying them other gifts) like a gift card, fun socks, or something like that. Cinder
Too practical? Not to me. But then my 21yo asked for socks for his birthday. He asked for socks for last year's birthday too. We did get him a regular file box one year but he hasn't used it. I think if we upgrade to the fireproof model it might get used, especially once he moves out. (Thanks for the idea, Pegasus!) I think it depends on the person. Some kids don't appreciate practical gifts. I worked with one woman who proposed to her 20yo dd to pay dd's car insurance as her b-day gift. The dd acted like that wasn't a gift at all and wanted a couple new sweaters instead. :001_rolleyes: Co-worker was flabbergasted that her dd thought sweaters were more worthy gifts.
stephanier.1765
My eldest son got one of those as a gift at that age and absolutely loved it. He still uses it today.

elegantlion
I agree to upgrade to a fireproof one and put some goodies in it. I think as long as you add something fun, it could be a welcome acknowledgment that he is moving into his adult life. *pauses to breathe and sniff as ds will be heading that way soon* quietly adds this to the list of things to buy for ds nearer to that time*
Anne in CA
I may steal this idea too.
