Openhearted
I'm home and done with emails for the next 20 minutes. I forgot to preemptively take ibuprofin this morning, so after 6 straight hours of teaching my brain was not so happy. Better now. I think I am dehydrated. Dawn, I hope you find some relief and a little pampering this evening! Hugs, Susan. Hope you are feeling better.
lots of little ducklings
Now I want a medieval castle!!! Oddly, I found them on the ground right after posting, even though they had been missing all day. This thread is good luck. :) Glad you found them! And yes. You do. It's my favorite toy.

Jean in Newcastle
I'm back from the fair. Tex went with me vicariously through my phone. I want to report that I am not a wanted fugitive despite Tex urging me to smuggle bunnies and piglets out in my backpack. I am strong in character though and resisted all attempts of her devilish tempting.

Renai
Well, my research question has morphed over the past couple of weeks. The original question in week 1 was: Will family involvement with home literacy projects in students' native language increase student emergent literacy participation in the classroom? Now the question is: What impact will bilingual family literacy activities have on developing prekindergartner's English literacy skills? This will be interesting. I hope I got it right this time.

Jean in Newcastle
Very bad night. Being out all day like I was yesterday does bad things to my body - nerves firing when they shouldn't, muscles cramping repeatedly - weird stuff like that. It makes it hard to get quality sleep. And today is another day where I will be out for many hours. I've gone over in my head whether I could jettison some of it but the one fun thing I'm doing is sandwiched between two not-fun-but-required things and going home doesn't make sense time wise. So "leap of faith" and hope that I get through it with God's help. So far I always have in my life. (Kind of obvious since I'm here to post on this thread. . . .)

Your question reminded me of my mom's experience as a kindergarten teacher years ago at a very poor, highly Hispanic school. In a lot of the homes of her students Spanish was the only language spoken, but she made the remark once that the kids come to school not knowing English but they also don't really even know Spanish because "the parents don't talk to their kids!"

I've had a couple of families like that. One mom said she takes her son with her to clean houses, and he plays by himself because there's nothing to talk about. I let her know to talk to him about what she is doing, keep a running commentary - "This is the Windex. I use it to clean the windows and glass stuff because it leaves them shiny..." Whatever. I think she did it because he started talking a lot more within about a month's time. It's not always so much they (any "they," regardless of ethnicity) don't talk to the kids, it's how. Sometimes the child is only being spoken to to be fussed at. You can tell when they are in the dramatic play area with the conversations they are having...
KrissiK
Piano tuner came by today for our piano's "annual". And I am proud to say that for the first time ever.... we had a "curriculum catalog perfect" morning. Snuggling on the couch with the olders doing Classical Studies, the little girls playing nicely in their room. Transitioning flawlessly to dd doing her math in the computer and DS doing a Latin recitation. The floor was actually clean, nobody was yelling or fighting. Then math with my first grader while dd watched her Latina Christiana DVD and DS did math on the computer. It was amazing. Of course now everyone is fighting with each other, but it was nice to know it can be done.

I took the kids on a rare field trip today to an "early American Trades Festival". It was fun and they got to make corn husk dolls and hanky dolls and dip candles and stuff like that. We came home, read a chapter of history, and then I took a nap. I actually conked out for a solid hour. Now we head out the door to church for dinner and children's choir.
