SquirrellyMama
My dad has been having trouble with ear infections and his ear closing up for 6 years or so. He has yet another ear infection, and his ear is swollen and turning purple. The purple in going down his face. He has a dr appt for 8am, Pacific Time. I think he should be in the ER. Has anyone heard of this before? I tried Googling it but couldn't find anything. Kelly
unsinkable
Kelly, my first thought was a circulation problem. His appt is in an hour? If it was any longer, I'd say ER, too. But his doc might be able to pave his way easier to the next level of treatment. (((Hugs)))
magnificent_baby
I would also go to the ER (if you haven't already left for his appt). They may refer you there anyway and I'm guessing he may need it treated aggressively (IV antibiotics). ETA: Sorry, reread and realized this is your Dad, and not a Ds. But I offer the same advice. Truscifi
At this point I would go to the doc, but be there early and make sure they see him immediately. :grouphug: I hope they are able to help him quickly.
Tiramisu
I had this as a teen. It's definitely an infection and it's spreading. Go to the ER. He will need antibiotics ASAP. Because it's spreading, they may do an IV. It will clear up, though, so try not to worry.
SquirrellyMama
I'm half way across the country from them so I'm really of no help. It is almost appointment time so I hope they clear it up quickly. My mom said she'd call as soon as they were done. Kelly

Lieutenant Stranger
I hope you've left...get to the ER. Could possibly be mastoiditis, or one heck of an infection. Don't wait-- just go!
SquirrellyMama
Ok, they got to the doctor, and he said he didn't like the look of it. He sent them to a specialist 40 minutes away. I still think the ER would have been better. My mom said they'd update me when they got there. Kelly
J-rap
Does he have a fever too? A couple of my children had something similar, but it started around their eye. It was very serious, but with antibiotics it cleared right up. I'm glad they're taking it seriously. Please keep us posted!
Starr
I'm glad they are in process of getting it treated! The ER always sounds comforting but they don't always have specialists on hand. :grouphug: It's hard to be so far away!
sbgrace
My son had mastoiditis, when an ear infection spreads into the mastoid space behind the ear. This sounds like a spreading infection to me. You might prepare them for the thought this will possibly mean surgery and hospitalization (for IV antibiotics).
SquirrellyMama
They ended up telling him not to go to the specialist. Not sure why. His doctor gave him another antibiotic and will see him again this afternoon. My mom would like to see him in the hospital. Maybe the antibiotics will work instead. Plink
??? !!! ??? Why would the gp doctor say not to go to the specialist if he is concerned enough to see the same patient twice in one day? Something isn't right. I'd go to the ER at this point because that doc would have lost my confidence. I hope your dad gets the care he needs.
