My DH is 32 and has had Type 1 (childhood) diabetes for the last 26 years. If you look at him, he looks like a handsome ;), fit 32 year old man. He manages his diabetes fairly well. Last Thursday morning he had a major episode that involved major chest pain, numbness in both arms and hands, and trouble breathing/vomiting from the pain, etc. I was shocked to realize the STRONG connection between diabetes and hardened arteries! He fortunately did not suffer an actual heart attack, but we are seeing a heart specialist tomarrow AM, because it was like a warning sign before an actual heart attack. So please keep him and myself in your prayers (his name is Chris), and also if you have any diabetics in your life be aware of the connection...

PS- The basics of why there is a connection has to do with the highs and lows of blood sugars over a long time... the artery walls compromise & harden. Similar to why diabetics have problems with eyes, hands and feet... It all has to do with vessels & blood exchange.

Praying for Chris, and I think it's actually a good thing (although very scary!) that you had a warning before an actual heart attack, so hopefully the doctors will be able to help him avoid further episodes. :grouphug:

I'm so sorry you guys are going through this, and I can only imagine how scared and worried you must be.

Lots of prayers.  That must be so scary for you all.  I will be praying for you.

Please make sure he checks with a retina specialist as well (not just an OD or general ophthalmologist).  In general, when diabetics start having kidney, heart, and other complications, they're usually having eye issues as well.

So glad that you figured this out early.  Hopefully the cardiologist has great news for you.  My dh had a heart attack at 45 and likely was at least partially related to his Type 2 diabetes.  he is Native American so at much higher risk for this than Caucasians.  He had been cleared by the doctor for FULL activity the day before the heart attack.  Thankfully some stents and a short recovery time later and he is back to 100%.

Gosh - how scary!  Glad it wasn't a real heart attack, but a warning nonetheless.

I don't know if you're interested in a change of diet, but Dr Bernstein's Diabetes Solution is something you may want to consider.  My daughter's boyfriend (also Type 1 - 26yo) has been on the diet.  He is enjoying much better health, much tighter control of blood sugar levels, and an 11kg weight loss.  It's reasonably restrictive (dd's bf follows it about 90%) but quite do-able.
