I am going to and I know I shouldn't look things up but it's hard to have all this info in front of me and not know what it all means. I will let you know.

Take a good rest and call tomorrow once the docter's office open. Sometimes the person interpreting the MRI reports gets a stack and calling lets you "jump queue" in getting the report interpreted.

I spoke with a nurse today and the report from the doctor is that the MRI is "essentially normal." All in all very good news. We have an appointment to go in talk about the test, not 100% sure why but I think it's the best way for him to answer questions. She said that there is crowding on the foramen magnum but nothing protuding in the spine. I don't know if this is something that they watch or not to see if it changes, she has already been diagnosed with scoliosis so I would like to see what the connection is if any. Also, they said there was thickening around the sinus but she was not sick last week. Maybe a referral to an ENT would be a good idea. So, I am happy that there is nothing major but still need to figure out what is causing all the problems.

That's really interesting. An ENT is a good idea. I had to have sinus surgery at one point and before that I had a bunch of middle ear dizziness going on. Sinus problems can also be triggered by food stuff (and it is diet related for me). I avoid white flour, processed sugar/corn syrup. I have to carefully balance my diet.

Thanks for keeping us posted! I'm glad the MRI looks ok! :grouphug:

It's a relief to know there is no big, obvious tumor. It makes it harder to figure out what is going on, but takes out the most frightening possibility. This MRI also sets a baseline against which future testing can be compared. It will be good to talk about the mri in specific with the dr--when you go, bring a summary of the timeline of events and copies of any and all other tests, even if you think the dr already has those. It's wise for you to always have/bring all the information that the dr needs to keep forefront in the case.

Our appointment went great! I liked the Dr. much better today. He went over all the films and took time to answer all our questions. He said the crowding did not show evidence of Chiari syndrome and she did not need to be checked later for it. It gets better with age. The thickening was her sinuses and they were suppose to be solid black on the film and her's were white. So for whatever reason they were completely plugged. We will follow up with her Pediatrician about that and see if she needs a referral to either an ENT or an Allergist? He also ordered PT for her to strengthen her neck and back muscles. She has already been diagnosed with scoliosis and the Vision Therapy teacher was happy about that. She said the neck muscles are directly connected to the eyes and often does neck exercises in therapy with her. She also told us that a while back she went to the eye dr. requesting glasses and found out that she had a nasty sinus infection. I don't know if her sinuses could be that plugged for the past several months and causing all these problems but it's worth looking into. All in all it was a good day and no terrible news. Thanks everyone for sticking this out with me and supporting me through this. Even though I don't know the source of the problem I feel like we are making progress now.

So glad the dr appt went well! This could be the best possible outcome--clear out a chronic underlying sinus infection and there may be real changes to both her vision and her posture.

As for the scoliosis, you should search "scoliosis" on this board. There are several of us here who have dealt with this extensively, including me. Hopefully our experience can help you. The single most important thing with scoliosis is aggressive, intensive exercise for the growing years.

Excuse the lack of paragraphs, we're having an IE glitch. I had a friend whose sister was hospitalized with what they thought was a stroke. Once that was ruled out, they suspected lupus. Finally, her strange symptoms were found to be caused by a sinus infection. I'm glad for the news from the neuro. Hopefully, with antibiotic treatment and VT, your dd will feel better. My dd has mild kyphosis, mild scoliosis, and a neck that curves the wrong way. All of this is technically within the normal range and she looks fine. Curiously, with regard to what your VT teacher said, a recent educational evaluation found vision issues despite a VT guru saying her visual processing is fine-- it's not exactly her eyes but more of a brain thing, according to him. She's doing well and I'm sure your dd will, too. I know more strengthening would improve my dd's back but...

Thank you. Both of the girls have actually been diagnosed with it and so far they just do an x-ray each year to monitor the growth. They are both very active but their posture is not so good. I will look for the info, maybe more things we can do at home to strengthen things up. I am also thinking that what ever we learn through PT we can share with her sister at home and start doing our in home program...we already are with all the VT things we have for homework.

That is really interesting. I never knew sinuses could cause that many problems. They didn't prescribe antibiotics but I did put a message into her Pediatrician so I will ask about that. I could see at VT yesterday that she is already starting to lean her head to the side to use the stronger eye which she wasn't doing before. Now, if I could find a trick to get through Math that would be great. We did math the other day and it took her over two hours to do 5 problems and then ended up taking a nap afterwards. It's the day to day that is hard.

There was someone else on the boards years ago who had that same finding on an MRI. I think she was prescribed antibiotics and posted here about whether she should take them or not because she didn't feel sick or suspect a sinus infection before the finding of inflammation on the MRI.

:grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: Extra hugs for the hard days. :)

They did actually prescribe an antibiotic for 10 days and gave us a referral to an ENT. That's interesting though, I wonder if she took them and it helped. I think it's a good idea to take them.

Okay, I never realized that an untreated sinus infection could kill you? I guess it could be causing all these problems for her, headache, pressure, sensitivity to light and double vision. If this is the case, it would have gotten much worse. Maybe the double vision has been a blessing?

Thank you for the thread, scary and interesting.

  • 2 months later...

So, we finished the vision therapy and things were getting better. Nothing changed with the double vision but she was complaining less, holding her head more straight and able to get through school work better. She loved the VT!

About a week ago, she started complaining about being dizzy when she gets up from lying down and seeing orange around her eyes. I am really at a loss. Every test has come back ok. She has had an MRI (just showed the sinus problem), CT scan, hearing test, VT, been to at least three to four different specialist and no concrete answers.

Why would she be seeing orange And, why is she dizzy? I called the eye dr and she said to follow up with pediatrician.

Any other ideas?

It's a total stab in the dark, but could it be ocular migraines? They can present without pain, cause dizziness and vertigo and also flashing light or colors. Hugs!

good ideas, no they never did cranial testing. they said the mri looked fine (I think it was the mri?? She doesn't complain of headaches but I understand that she might not with the problem.

It seems to happen together and when she goes from lying down to getting up. She is both dizzy and sees the orange. She has almost fell over a few times. It only seems to happen when getting up though which I think might mean it's not something serious but I really don't know what to think at this point. She says it seems more with one eye but happens with both.

I have double vision due to my thyroid being so out of whack for too long. I also get ocular migraines and they have color. I have blindness in the middle or colors with no pain. When the pain finally hits only dark quiet will help, and migraine meds.

Keep asking questions and consider researching top eye or neurosurgeons and try to get another opinion

You may want to look up POTS, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome. That could very much explain what you describe here. It would also makes sense given her age. You can go to a cardiologist with this, but it would be particularly helpful to find one who is familiar with it.

By any chance, is does she have hypermobile joints?
