Why do people clamor for a new iphone?

I lovelovelovelove my iPhone. But, I still have the 3GS. It still works great. We will upgrade when our phones are no longer supported. The word on the street was that the 5 was supposed to be waterproof, but that didn't happen this time around. Maybe next time? That would be worth the upgrade. I don't know if a slightly bigger screen and slightly faster processor is worth it to me.

I pre ordered the iPhone 5 to replace my iPhone 4 and it showed up at my door via UPS yesterday. I am a bit of a tech lover and I was very excited about getting it. I don't spend much money on myself at all but I love my iPhone and it's one thing that I am willing to spend money on for myself. I'm not sure why people care what others buy or whether they post about it on Facebook or not. When I see people post similar things, I just think "gee, they sure are excited. Glad they're happy." I don't automatically assume that they're bragging or trying to keep with any of the Jones family.

 

My daughter has been asking for a newer iPod Touch so after I set up my new phone yesterday, I set up my old iPhone 4 for her as a Touch. She's thrilled and I'm thrilled. My husband rolled his eyes. Guess I can't please all of the people all of the time! :D

I got the new iPhone delivered to my door yesterday.

 

I'm not keeping up with anyone, and it's not a hobby. I didn't need it (my iPhone 4 was just fine). I wanted it, and I had the money for it, so I got it.

 

Also, I'm selling my iPhone 4 to Gazelle for $150 (they even paid the shipping) so that really cut down on the cost.

 

ETA: I really don't understand the judgment. Why does anyone care what anyone else gets or doesn't get?

 

But did you brag on and on about it to all your FB friends?

 

If someone has the disposable cash and prefers to spend it upgrading his/her phone rather than on something else, that's his/her prerogative.

 

But I find it totally tacky to do the equivalent of shouting "Look at me! Look at me! I've got the coolest new gadget! Aren't I special?" to dozens or even hundreds of acquaintances. :rolleyes:

I really don't mind the posts about people getting excited about their new phones (or Amazon order, or whatever). I don't mind the "my kid scored three goals today" posts. I rejoice with them! I posted one today about my kids who did really well in their first regatta. But, I thought LONG and hard about it before I posted because I didn't want anyone to be offended.

 

ETA: I opted not to post anything from our last vacation because I didn't want people to think I was bragging. But, geez. There were a TON of really great pictures that I would have loved to share!!! And, not because I'm bragging that I'm on vacation. Am I the last person alive who loves to hear about other peoples' vacations? I guess I assume there are other people out there that might like hearing about the things I post about.

And I am not anti-Apple. We own more than a few Apple products.

 

Clicking this from an iPhone 4 (no S) and no plans of upgrading until is this is dead.

Some people don't like it when people post about their kids, or public school starting back up, or when they've had a good day or a non-specific bad day (shamelessly looking for empathy!), or food porn, or, well, someone is always going to be irritated. I don't understand it either. I know people who wait for every new upgrade. I'd love a smartphone, but I've still got a flip phone and I'll keep it until it dies.

I wonder... does it make a difference when it's "look at my new thing" vs. "here is what my kid is doing" or "hey, look what we saw on vacation" or "doesn't this recipe look delicious?"

 

Maybe the difference is because the phone is a thing. I don't think to post on facebook about things I buy. But maybe that's because I don't buy interesting things. ;)

Well, I posted when my son made a local select baseball team. I was proud. I wanted to shout it out to the world. He worked SOOOO hard. I guess I don't see the difference between these posts. Both made by proud parents and both should be applauded.

I think it's healthy to approach social networks with the assumption that your friends aren't trying to rub your nose in your mediocrity.

Well, yeah...I could see how that would be annoying. And no, I didn't.

 

But are you sure that's what they were doing? Or was it just that they were excited about it? I really don't know. It's an honest question. Surely there are people out there who do both things.

I like looking at friends' vacation photos. A friend of mine recently went to Hawaii. Those were some incredibly lovely photos.

I like vacation photos of wildlife (urban or otherwise), and have been know to look through obscenely long photo sets in search of them. One of my friends documents her trips with photos of plaques. If I tried too do it, it would be a disaster, but she finds incredible stuff.

And yes. I never assume that everyone who posts is trying to out-do me. They are really excited about what they post and I try to share that excitement. I think it's rare that someone (at least in my group of friends) is trying to rub anyone's nose in anything!

Those would be amazing!!! We had friends go to Hawaii for spring break last year. Incredible!!! It has me pricing out Hawaii vacations!!!
