Olympics--anyone getting excited yet?

Recommended Posts

Our town just finished hosting the Olympics track and field trials. It was great fun. My mother-in-law and several friends volunteered to help with the trials. The whole town was full of track fans!

Not only that, but the men's 800 was swept by three local men, people who live and run in our community.

We can't wait to watch the Olympics in Beijing!

Isaac is getting all his friends to do a neighborhood Olympics competition. They're having races and making up sports and having a grand old time.

I hope we'll be able to watch a little swimming. Swimming is the only sport Isaac does with any regularity, but it's the only sport we've never watched in person or on TV. I mean, we always go to HIS meets, of course. But we've never gone to a college meet, or watched any swimming on TV.

Dd knows some coaches, lots of track and field athletes, and a few gymnasts going. One coach in particular (the coach dd trains with) tends to get medals in three different fields, so we'll be watching for him and his athletes. It is very exciting, isn't it?

We have another girl from our town participating in Olympics (gymnastics)! We're already excited about watching. Anyone else looking forward to watching any particular sport? Know anyone in the Olympics? Or in the Olympic trials?

The Chinese government, in an effort to spruce up its image, has decided that all the regulations that are never adhered to should be followed to the letter. Suddenly a foreigner gets a 600 USD fine for not registering at the local police station within 24 hours of arrival. The ports are grinding to a halt as they attempt for the first time to obey their procedures book.

And I'm biting my nails about whether we will actually get our visas to leave tomorrow, and whether our moving shipment will clear customs.

Just call me grumpy.

One local girl is in gymnastics. And although we don't know her personally, my dd's coach does know her and used to train with her.

Four of the men in the waterpolo team are local to us! And one of them is the brother of my son's synchro swimming coach.

The newspapers keep talking about divers. About half the diving team is from the area. Three divers train where my kids take swimming and diving lessons. We see them train while the kids swim. Every week! But I don't really know them.

Now, in the Winter Olympics of '88, I had four cousins compete! Supposedly it was the highest number of related athletes in the same Olympics. That's what the journalists used to say. I had two cousins in speed skating representing Canada, and two in dance skating representing France. Those in dance got a bronze medal!

:lol:I just got back from grocery shopping in town. Then I come to the boards and see this subject line! I was listening to the radio on the way home and just heard Earl Pitts talking about the same thing--well, sorta. His whole commentary was about how athletes are now using Viagra to enhance athletic performance:001_huh: Viagra is not an illegal drug, so he figures there will be athletes at the Olympics who are using Viagra and that could make for some interesting events. The relay, wrestling, the pole vault, etc. I just love Earl Pitts! And then I see the subject line: "Olympics--anyone getting excited yet?":smilielol5:

Oh my...(cringing at the double entendre)!!! Guess Viagra wouldn't be a good med to use prior to biking, wrestling, or couples skating! LOL

Wow, you must come from a superior gene pool :)

Who is the gymnast? I'm rooting for Chelsie Memel, Nastia Luikin, or the cute, little smiling blonde Shawn Johnson.

You'll have to let me know if there's a surge in swimming interest following the Olympics. A home town girl, Carly Patterson, won Gold medal in 2004 Olympics for gymnastics. Every gym was packed for months after that. It was pretty funny to see how quickly the excitement faded, though.

I'm very excited about the Olympics. I'm an Olympic junkie LOL. I don't care what sport it is I'll watch it if it's the Olympics. My mom and grandma were visiting me during the last Winter Olympics and couldn't believe I got up at 8am to watch curling :tongue_smilie: I never get up before 9am, but it was the olympics and curling is one of my favorites.
