kristin0713
Do they still sell this anywhere? That old fashioned "paste" that came in a small container, with a stick. We used it at elementary school way back when. I'm thinking it has to last longer than glue sticks, which we go through at an unbelievable rate. SkateLeft
I'm pretty sure I've seen the Elmer's brand paste at our local Target, though I haven't bought it in years! When I was in school, we always used "mucilage." It was kind of like rubber cement, but without the mess. I wonder if I can still find it anywhere... Now you've got me off to Google various types of school glue.
kristin0713
I was thinking as I posted this that I wished I had a Target nearby. Our local options are Walmart, Staples, and Michaels. I'm doubtful they will have it but I guess it is worth a look.

Lang Syne Boardie
I've been searching all over the internet for the past 15 minutes. :D But I can't find it. :( Talk about strong olfactory association! When I read your post I was immediately transported in my mind to my third grade classroom, pasting a paper sack owl (with construction paper features) to hang above my desk. I was having trouble with the beak but the eyes were good. LOL I would also love to buy some Elmer's school paste, but I think it might have been discontinued. I can't find it online. Beth in SW WA
Hey, I remember those! Great memories. And I think I still remember the smell of that paste. :D Now I'm curious too... :iagree::iagree::iagree: I haven't thought of that paste in 30 years! Thanks for the flashback, OP! :) Talk about strong olfactory association! When I read your post I was immediately transported in my mind to my third grade classroom I can smell it, too! Recovering Sociopath
Oh, same here with the smell. That is a really important school smell. Mmmm.
godsaggie
I'm sure that I saw some at Wal-Mart last summer when we were getting some last minute school supplies. Do you remember rubber cement? I used to love to play with it and roll it into a bouncy ball!
mommyagain
Here's a recipe that I've used with success: 1c water 1Tbl sugar 1 tsp white vinegar 1/2 c cornstarch Mix water, sugar, vinegar and cornstarch in a small saucepan. Heat on med-low, stirring until mixture becomes thick and creamy. Let cool. Ready to use. Can be stored up to a week in an airtight container. The "paste smell" comes from oil of wintergreen. You can add a drop or two. You can add one of these paste scrapers for a more "authentic" paste experience! Vida Winter
Love the paste smell. It also made me remember mimeograph ink. If anyone still makes that I'd get a bottle just to sniff once in a while.

Homemama2
YES! Elmer's makes it (still looks the same as when I was in K). My mom bought my kids some last year when all of the back to school sales were going on. I think she just got it at Walmart or Target...possibly Staples. mommyagain
Just curious, since one is not eating this, does it lose it's stickieness after a week? Nope! It doesn't lose it's stickiness. In fact, I think I kept mine a little longer than a week. After a while it starts to dry up.
umsami
You can buy a rubber cement jar and fill it....or.....try Nori paste. http://www.dickblick.com/products/yasutomo-nori-paste/
Farrar
And does the recipe make it smell like that old paste? Because forget sticky, that's what's really important.
kristin0713
I love the recipe idea! But I need it to last longer than a week. I seriously don't have time to make paste every week. I wonder of just adding some water would bring the stickiness back?
Hunter
I remember buying Yasutomo Nori paste at Dick Blick. I remember I was obsessed with getting some paste and don't know why  I have flashes of confused sales people asking why, but don't remember my answer  Seizure based memory loss hits again. I wonder where the paste went. I have a faint memory of one of my manic tutoring students and the paste. I have the feeling there is a good story here, but I don't remember any of it  Anyway there is a thing called Yasutomo Nori paste sold by Dick Blick, but I can't even review it for you. Sorry. Flash of colored construction paper strips surfacing. Ahh, I think we made woven paper placemats for a pagan holiday meal. This memory just gets weirder, the more I remember. Now I want paste again! For what I don't know.
ktgrok
sorry, it has been discontinued. http://www.artsuppliesonline.com/catalog.cfm?cata_id=4453 I think that is crap.
nukeswife
I checked the Elmer's site and they don't even list it as an option. Something that may work for you is what I do with my kids. I bought a gallon of regular Elmer's glue and a pump for it. When we need to use glue I pump a little in a plastic condiment cup (little 2 oz plastic cups I got on amazon) and the kids use a paintbrush to spread it on their projects. unfrumpable.
And does the recipe make it smell like that old paste? Because forget sticky, that's what's really important. I think someone mentioned earlier that you would need to add wintergreen oil to get the smell. Is it bad that while everyone else is talking about smell, I am wondering about taste? This thread also brings to mind when I used to put glue all over my palm, let it dry, then peel it off like skin. Fun times!
kristin0713
sorry, it has been discontinued. http://www.artsuppliesonline.com/cat...m?cata_id=4453 I think that is crap. Oh that STINKS!! I guess there is not a demand for it anymore with glue sticks being the new thing but I really don't understand why. My kids can't be the only ones that destroy and waste glue sticks on a regular basis?!
mommyagain
Well, now I have to get some oil of wintergreen and start experimenting! After all, the smell's the thing! Ahhh, the things we do for the good of the hive!:D

mommyagain
No Kristin, your kids aren't the only ones. I have three little boys who think the right way to use a glue stick is to smash on in big, sticky globs! They also like to draw on the walls with the purple kind and have tried to use it as chapstick!
unfrumpable.
My son also goes through glue sticks like crazy. He's even worse with regular glue, which I now keep at my desk. :)

Annie Laurie
The problem with glue sticks is that stuff doesn't always adhere well with it, I remember the school paste working much better.

Dolphin
I also found this one. It won't smell the same, but it has a paste form with it's own brush. http://www.treehugger.com/style/coccoina-eco-friendly-glue.html

rockermom
Now I can't get the image of Adam Sandler eating the paste in "Billy Madison" out of my head.
