-Building types of nests with different materials (sand, clay, straw, leaves, twigs)

Konos uses literature resources like Audubon biographies, etc.,and has a ton of bird activities in volume 1, like:

~choosing tools that mimic bird beaks and trying to eat food with them (chopsticks, pliers, straw, etc).

~measuring long bird wings like an albatros

~building different kinds of feet with clay

~trip to the zoo or natural museum to study birds

~building types of nests with different materials (sand, clay, straw, leaves, twigs)

~dramatizing things birds do (protect their territory...)

~drawing different varieties

~nature walk to locate and identify species

Oh, our all time favorite resource books were the little Golden Nature Guides to Birds, and the Reader's Digest North American Wildlife.

We will be using Memoria Press 5th grade science. The first semester is entirely a bird study. You can look at their site and see which materials they use. I picked up the What About Birds already and started pre reading. I have learned a lot already. We will be doing the activities listed in the back of it.

I totally agree. We've always enjoyed birds and trips to the bird sanctuary, but nothing like the daily thrill of seeing birds right in front of our classroom window. I like your idea of different types of bird feeders. We'll definitely look into that. :001_smile:

My ds really likes Dover's Beginning Birdwatching Book.

We also picked up a antique copy of Edith Patch's Bird Stories, but haven't read them yet.

It's also very handy to have a state or location specific bird field guide, such as "Birds of Wisconsin", "Birds of Iowa", etc. instead of JUST "Birds of North America" or "Birds of Europe" or wherever you happen to live.

We're bird enthusiasts here!

P.S. Did anyone mention Mowat's Owls in the Family?
