Beth in SW WA
Please share your favorite books/resources for mid-elementary/middle school'ish age. I searched old threads and already found some gems here. We have a few books on our shelves already. I am :bigear:. Thanks in advance! acurtis75
We have A LOT of Mythology books but the D'Auliere's book is dd's favorite. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=d'aulaires+book+of+greek+myths&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&client=safari&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=4186808625206101171&sa=X&ei=hSQiT9LZN6KEsgKutKDACQ&ved=0CEoQ8wIwAQ
JudoMom
All of my boys loved Amazing Greek Myths of Wonder and Blunder. The Mythlopedias were very well received (there are several titles).
Dmmetler
My DD loves the Padric Colum versions of the Iliad, Odyssey, Jason and the Argonauts, and other tales. They're available free on Kindle.

mcconnellboys
Anything by Olivia Coolidge, if you can find it. Her Trojan War is simply one of the best tellings of The Iliad I've ever read. It includes tons of back stories and tangents that you don't get in many other retellings.... She's right up there with Rosemary Sutcliff! Miss Marple
My boys enjoyed Odds Bodkin's audio version of The Odyssey. That was probably the biggest hit with my boys for the classics at that age. I'm not sure girls would be as enthralled (lots of sound effects...bone crunching, eyeball squishing, etc.)
jenbrdsly
I have a Greek Myth Round-up on my blog. My favorite one by far is the Hugh Lupton Odyssey.
beaners
What ages do you all feel the D'Auliere book is appropriate for? We are planning to start with Ancients in our 1st grade year. I skimmed it quickly and I'm not worried about the reading level. I saw mention of Zeus marrying girls to have children, but no explicit details. Is "marrying" as far as those descriptions go? Obviously how all these individuals come into being is important to these stories, but I'd like to avoid a play-by-play of any bedroom scenes. Are there any passages that might need special attention on my part?
Beth in SW WA
Thank you! I ordered the Sutcliff books & D'aulaires from Amazon. We have the D'aulaires audio but the book would be ideal to have. Dd will be in heaven.
crazyforlatin
My DD loves the Padric Colum versions of the Iliad, Odyssey, Jason and the Argonauts, and other tales. They're available free on Kindle. Aaah! You're right! I was going to buy the Kindle version with the TOC but held off since I do have a couple of the books. It's easier for DD to read on the Kindle. Thanks!

Penelope
We also enjoy Nathaniel Hawthorne's retellings: The Wonder Book, and Tanglewood Tales.
SonshineLearner
:iagree: Do you have Famous Men of Greece? I have the version with colorful illustrations and DD loved reading it. And... if you can handle listening to it, my son will listen to Librovox recordings of FMOG. I think we'll end up doing the whole series. I was also looking at MP yesterday; the older stuff is looking great, too!! :)
Beth in SW WA
Our box of goodies from Amazon arrived tonight. Dd is in Greek Mythology bliss with her pile of pretty new books (on the couch with a cough/cold/crud). Thank you for the wonderful suggestions.
