Teachin'Mine
How strange that the coroner would even list it as "spontaneous human combustion". Um - he was found near an open fireplace. Seems more plausible that he moved some wood and a sleeve or something caught on fire. Same as the people who die smoking in bed or in a chair ... strange article. AuntieM
When I was a kid, I was fascinated by this. In lots of reading up on the subject, I learned that nearly all reported cases had a logical (ie, not-so-spontaneous) explanation. There were some that remained complete mysteries. WiseOwlKnits
I totally believe it can happen. Being 9 months pregnant in the hottest Texas summer ever recorded, I'm surprised I haven't combusted myself yet.

I was pregnant during one of the hottest summers on record, but it was Minnesota not Texas. And now for the next season of my life, my hubby has said he is sure I would spontaneously combust while having a night sweats episode. I say we save on energy bills in the winter. OrganicAnn
Wasn't there a character in a Dicken's novel that supposed spontaneously combusted? I vaguely remember a footnote stating that in that era they thought it was possible, but with modern science we know it can't happen. annlaura
I went through a period as a child where I was terrified of spontaneous combustion. Worried about it for ages.

Yes, thank Heavens!! It went out earlier this summer over a weekend and I'm not sure who was more miserable - me or DH having to listen to me complain. He ended up going to Walmart at 11:30 pm to buy a window AC.
LaxMom
heh. I thought you were going to link an Enquirer 'article'. Same thing. There are typos in the article. (honestly, what ever happened to editing?) Also, the cute comment about putting away the asbestos underwear.... Well those wouldn't help protect anything but the armchair if you spontaneously combust, would they. (and am I the only one wondering if any of the billions of passengers on the NYC subway has ever been captured on video being hit with a meteorite? Just sayin')
Mommy to monkeys
This is so weird. I remember seeing a documentary on it in junior high and being seriously creeped out.
Violet Crown
There's a spontaneous human combustion in Charles Brockden Brown's Wieland. It was my favorite part of the book.
FaithManor
I'm surprised some people don't explode from being full of hot air. Bill But, Bill! Think of the horror. What would the world do? No more politicians. :D Faith

Mrs Mungo
I was deeply disappointed when I found out stories telling of chess players whose heads exploded were not true. Not that I wanted people to explode, it just seems like such a great plot device. http://www.snopes.com/humor/iftrue/chess.asp
