Picture Books (History and Biography)

This is my older daughter’s kinder year, and right now I am forgoing formal science and history; however, we have a number of interesting science-related picture books and read one daily. I would like to do this with history and want to build a collection of biographical and historical picture books.

What I am looking for are well-written, interesting, attractive books. I’ll be reading aloud and don’t want easy-readers.

To give an idea of the type for which I am looking, here are a few we have on our shelves:

The Man Who Walked Between the Towers by Mordicai Gerstein: http://www.amazon.com/Man-Who-Walked-Between-Towers/dp/031236878X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315086003&sr=8-1

Pocohontas by Ingri and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire: http://www.amazon.com/Pocahontas-Ingri-Edgar-Parin-dAulaire/dp/1893103285/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1315086077&sr=1-1

The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau by Dan Yaccarino: http://www.amazon.com/Fantastic-Undersea-Life-Jacques-Cousteau/dp/B004Z8LG6U/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1315086142&sr=1-1

Any recommendations?

We love picture books for learning. I did the same with DD who is now 8, and will be doing the same with DS5. This year I just purchased this set from BFbooks to read aloud. I actually read these to my dd8 when she was little, I just never bought them. These are all really good, and I know both will get a lot out of them, especially since this is the year we are focusing on American history!

http://www.bfbooks.com/Early-American-History-Primary-Jumbo-Pack

We also read a lot of biography books like the following. There are many of these. Also, when we found someone we were interested in, I would find other books on that person to continue the reading.

http://www.amazon.com/Picture-Book-Helen-Keller-Biographies/dp/0823409503/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1315094310&sr=8-3

DD loved these You Wouldn't Want to be series:

http://www.amazon.com/You-Wouldnt-Want-Sail-Mayflower/dp/053112391X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1315094399&sr=1-1

I love the Betsy Maestro books, but depending on your child, they might be a bit much at 5:

http://www.amazon.com/Exploration-Conquest-Americas-Columbus-1500-1620/dp/0688154743/ref=pd_sim_b_37

If You Lived... series:

http://www.amazon.com/If-You-Lived-Colonial-Times/dp/059045160X/ref=pd_sim_b_11

American Girl books are good, but probably best to wait until your daughter is a bit older and can read them herself, because they're fun for them to read independently.

Off the top of my head, a few we've done that I really enjoyed that were shorter, but still rich and informative:

Before John Was a Jazz Giant by Carol Weatherford (John Coltrane)

You Can't Do That, Amelia by Kimberly Klier (Amelia Earhart)

Elizabeth Leads the Way by Tanya Lee Stone (Elizabeth Cady Stanton)

Fannie in the Kitchen by Deborah Hopkinson (Fannie Farmer)

Ahoy, Ahoy, Are You There? by Robert Quackenbush (Alexander Graham Bell)

I think it's fun just to browse through the biographies in the children's section. For longer picture book biographies, I really like Diane Stanley and Leonard Everett Fisher.

We love love love the D'Aulaire books from Beautiful Feet. They are everything I wanted in a children's history book-accurate, well written, and beautifully illustrated. They captivate my six year old, and we are flying through them. They are pricey up front, but well worth it.

:iagree: Definitely a must!!

Also, I'd love to hear some of your favorite science books you're doing this year! I am always looking for more good ideas :)

Awhile ago someone posted a link for the NSTA’s Outstanding Trade Books: http://www.nsta.org/publications/ostb/. It is a GREAT list.

Here are some we have enjoyed:

Cave, by Diane Siebert (Our hobby is caving, so this book-in-verse is a big hit in our home.): http://www.amazon.com/Cave-Diane-Siebert/dp/0688164471/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315102771&sr=8-1

Life Story by Virginia Lee Burton (This was written in 1962, so I would not use it as a primary source on evolution. However, it is still a wonderful read.): http://www.amazon.com/Life-Story-Virginia-Lee-Burton/dp/0547203594/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1315103558&sr=1-1

Just a thought, you may want to preview the Pocahontas and Abraham Lincoln books by the D'Aulaires. Personally, I couldn't take them here as they are just too much a product of their times and include references, language, and pictures that could be considered racist and inappropriate to modern audiences. Treading carefully here because we are not super sensitive, but it was way too much for me and required too much editing. Just in case you hadn't read these two, you may want to before you decide to read them aloud and have to edit on the fly.

Thank you for posting this link! As a newbie, I had no idea this existed. I only went through the 2011 list, and already I want to buy the buffalo and bee books--as much for me as for my son to read!!

Re: your original request for books, I think the other ladies covered it nicely. We're d'Aulaire fans, too!

Okay. It's big, so I'm going to do it in a few posts. This is just the history one, and it only goes thru the American Revolution. If you want more, I can give you the rest of the list. (It goes thru the space race.) The truth is, I'm a bit afraid of people think I'm an obsessive freak if I show you the whole thing without knowing what you're getting into. If you are interested, let me know and I'll see what I can do about the science and literature ones. If you want and promise not to call me a freak. :001_smile:

Great list Anna, thanks! At first glance, I've gotten many of these for DD8, but never in any particular order (just ordered from the library randomly over the last couple years). It looks like you've got them in order? I'll be keeping this list for use with DS5, as I never kept track of what books I ordered and just poked around various lists and amazon recommendations. Wonderful!

I'm definitely interested in the science and literature lists as well. Though we read a ton, I've never been good at making or keeping actual lists, and it will be nice to have some book lists on hand!

Here's some lit: I'm copying and pasting. The asteriks are just what I've read aloud lately. This was my kindergarten list. It doesn't include chapter books. I can post more, but I'm starting to feel really freakish...... It's the kind of thing I like, having a list and just requesting books from the library a few dozen at a time, but I don't think many people are like me in that regard.

I do have some other booklists.....they aren't quite as well fleshed out as my American history one. Before you order some, look at them on amazon. Some of them were nice to read from the library, but definitely not worth purchasing, imo.

I have a not as well fleshed out one for Ancients and one for earth science/ astronomy. And I have my 1st/ 2nd grade list, that has more chapter book read alouds, although we kept plugging away on the kindergarten picture books. It's been a multi year thing, especially since we keep rereading.

I also have my list of books for my kids to read to themselves.
