  1. I'm doing America Government with my high schooler this year and so I was looking for some biographies to go along with her readings. I'm thinking of maybe George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt... Anyone else you can recommend that would go along with American Government. I'm just looking for some good biographies. She's not a big reader if that helps any. Thanks!
  2. I'm wondering what y'all think of using Walter Isaacson's biographies of Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein during the middle years? I am pretty sure I saw them on a logic board list this summer, but am wondering if most folks find them appropriate &c for the middle grades -- they are clearly written for an adult audience. I might try to plop them into their proper spaces in the history rotation, or assign them as one-offs; not sure. TIA!
  3. Hi, I am looking for suggestions for biographies for the list of great men and women to cover in the grammar stage. Also, any suggestions on additional people worth covering? Many thanks Gary
  4. I posted this list on AVA's thread about non-fic titles for the modern era but I thought I would post it separately as well. I generally prefer modern authors for history as I get tired of having to worry about racism and sexism in older books, besides the fact that there are many wonderful non-fic books these days that are wonderfully engaging with lovely pictures. Here is my list so far. I had lists of books they authored as well but alas I closed my window. I'll try to add more later, let me know your favorites that I have left off. Mostly I've included books for the 10+ crowd but I also have authors of wonderful non-fic picture books. I'm looking for any author of wonderful non-fic books for the k-8 crowd. Kathleen Krull- mostly picturebooks, many biographies and several in the Giants of Science series. Jean Fritz- picture book- high school level Albert Marrin- Mostly 12+ Steve Sheinkin- 10+ Russell Freedman- 10+ Numerous award winning history books Sue Macy- picture books- YA- She seems to specialize in women's biographies Susan Campbell Bartoletti- 8+ Jim Murphy-8+ Marc Aronson- 12+ Sugar Changed the World (slavery), Trapped (Chilean miners), etc Karen Blumenthal- 10+, Six Days in October (stock market crash), Bootleg (prohibition), Let Me Play (title IX), Steve Jobs, Sam Walton Joseph Bruchac- k+, Several books related to Native Americans, non-fic picture books- ex- A Boy Named Slow(Sitting Bull) and books about traditional NA tales (The First Strawberries) as well as books for older kids, like Code Talker Guy Delisle- Graphic Novels - Pyongyang: A Journey in North Korea, Burma Chronicles, Jerusalem, Shenzen: A Travelogue from China Candace Fleming- Amelia Lost, The Lincolns, Our Elanor, Ben Franklin's Almanac, The Great and Only Barnum, etc Nathan Hale 8+ Graphic Novels- Big Bad Iron Clad (civil war), Donner Dinner Party (westward expansion), Treaties, Trenches, Mud and Blood (WWI) etc Wilborn Hampton- Kennedy Assassinated, September 11, War in the Middle East Doreen Rappaport - Beyond Courage( Jewish resistance to Holocaust), Several books about slavery, many wonderful biographical award winning picture books- MLK, Helen Keller, Teddy Roosevelt, Eleanor, JFK, Dirt on their Skirts (women baseball players during war)
  5. This is my older daughter’s kinder year, and right now I am forgoing formal science and history; however, we have a number of interesting science-related picture books and read one daily. I would like to do this with history and want to build a collection of biographical and historical picture books. What I am looking for are well-written, interesting, attractive books. I’ll be reading aloud and don’t want easy-readers. To give an idea of the type for which I am looking, here are a few we have on our shelves: The Man Who Walked Between the Towers by Mordicai Gerstein: http://www.amazon.com/Man-Who-Walked-Between-Towers/dp/031236878X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1315086003&sr=8-1 Pocohontas by Ingri and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire: http://www.amazon.com/Pocahontas-Ingri-Edgar-Parin-dAulaire/dp/1893103285/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1315086077&sr=1-1 The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau by Dan Yaccarino: http://www.amazon.com/Fantastic-Undersea-Life-Jacques-Cousteau/dp/B004Z8LG6U/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1315086142&sr=1-1 Any recommendations?
  6. Are you using or have you used this? This is by the author of ES. I printed and bound into a booklet. Did you change anything? What were your scientists that you studied for the ancient time period? Updated: Finally, I put the photos up for how I plan to use this resource. Here Let me know what you are planning! I may need to add and to adapt :D LOL
  7. I am in the initial planning stage of putting together a "History of Science" course for my 13 yo son (entering 8th grade). This will be more of a history course rather than a science course as I am planning to incorporate timeline work and writing into it. Joy Hakim's The Story of Science books will serve as the spine. I have a couple of ideas for other readings, too, but I need help choosing 4-6 scientist biographies to add into the plans. When I started making a list of possible biographies, I realized that there is quite a bit from which to choose. What are your favorite scientist biographies? Reading levels could range from upper elementary through high school. Also...if anyone has ideas for specific "science history" writing topics or sources, I'd love to hear about them. My son is going to be using MCT's Essay Voyage next year; I have seen several writing assignments in it that could be used with this course, but I'm always open to other ideas. Thanks in advance, Jetta
  8. I am searching for high school reading level biographies of five to six Christian missionaries for a teen girls' club. Women and Men of Faith Series are a possibility, but perhaps you know of a publisher you prefer. Plus, there are a plethora of amazing missionaries to read about but I need a narrow offering. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Oh, any thoughts on a used on-line resource to purchase 8-10 copies each - used? THANKS!
  9. In the May 22-23 edition of the Wall Street Journal, T. J. Stiles, biographer of Cornelius Vanderbilt and Jesse James, recommends a few "mogul biographies": Andrew Carnegie (1989) by Joseph Frazier Wall The Life and Legend of Jay Gould (1986) by Maury Klein Morgan: American Financier (1999) by Jean Strouse Fallen Founder: The Life of Aaron Burr (2007) by Nancy Isenberg Pulitzer: A Life in Politics, Print, and Power (2010) by James McGrath Morris I really liked the book Buffett: The Making of an American Capitalist (1995) by Roger Lowenstein Buffett is still an active investor.
