Book Recommendations for 8 year old boy

I'd appreciate any suggestions for reading material for my son. He read all the Magic Tree House books last year and he absolutely loved the Odyssey series by Mary Pope Osbourne. He enjoyed some of The Littles books. He's reading the 2nd book in The Boxcar Children series now, but doesn't seem as excited about it.

Any suggestions for young boys who especially love the Odyssey? He also loves non-fiction.

Thanks!

Lisa

Hank the Cowdog series, Erikson

anything by EB White

Chronicles of Narnia [he's in Prince Caspian for obvious reasons right now!]

Flat Stanley books

He also still enjoys picture books [which he has to read to little bros]:

Arthur books by Marc Brown

Jon Sceiska and Lane Smith

Diane Stanley [Rumplestiltskin's Daughter was a recent favorite]

Arnold Lobel

The Stepping Stones books are a good size, both to hold and read in one sitting. He really likes the True Adventures right now.

I also think you can't go wrong with the classic lists at Ambleside Online.

- Great Illustrated Classics series

These are written at a 3rd grade level. Some "adventure boy" classics included in the series: King Arthur; Robin Hood; Swiss Family Robinson; 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea; Treasure Island; Sherlock Holmes; The Three Musketeers; etc.

Robinson Crusoe Reader

This is an adaptation by Julia Cowles; it was a favorite of my boys at that age. See it at:

classic adventure picture books by Ludmilla Zeman

Not sure about the reading level of the text, but we enjoyed these:

- trilogy of picture books about the epic of Gilgamesh (Gilgamesh the King; The Revenge of Ishtar; The Last Quest of Gilgamesh).

- trilogy of picture books retelling the voyages of Sinbad (Sinbad; Sinbad's Secret; Sinbad in the Land of Giants).

Peter and the Starcatchers

Not sure, but this may well be a bit above your son's reading level, but a number of people here have recommended Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry as a fun adventure tale of Peter Pan's further adventures.

Here are a few more titles that are more adventure/quest oriented:

2nd/3rd grade reading level

- Moongobble and Me series (Coville)

- Commander Toad series (Yolen)

- Dragonslayer Academy series (McMullan)

- Jigsaw Jones (boy detective series) -- Prellar

- Viking Adventure (Bulla)

- Sword in the Tree (Bulla)

- Riding the Pony Express (Bulla)

3rd grade reading level

- The Whipping Boy (Fleischman)

- McBroom's Wonderful One-Acre Farm (Fleischman)

- Twenty and Ten (Bishop)

- The Little Riders (Shemin)

3rd/4th grade reading level

- By the Great Horn Spoon (Fleischman)

- Trumpet of the Swan (White)

- The Mouse and the Motorcycle (McCleary)

- My Father's Dragon (Gannett)

- Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (Fleming)

4th/5th grade reading level

- The Rescuers, Miss Bianca, Miss Bianca in the Orient (Sharpe)

My children have enjoyed them. I would say they are on a third grade level. They are old and we borrow them from the library. Sometimes they have been so shabby that I have to read a chapter aloud to entice them to give them a chance. I would categorize the ones we've read as historical fiction.
