Looking for something to teach US states this year

My ds8 needs to learn his US states. Does anyone have any resource ideas that would be helpful for teaching this? He does not like coloring, so state coloring books are out! I particularly want him to learn where the various states are located.

This game is a lot of fun http://www.amazon.com/TaliCor-4100186-Snapshots-Across-America/dp/B000078VHP/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1282183512&sr=1-1

Also, this is a great website by National Geographic - you have 180 seconds to identify all the states. My kids LOVED this one! http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/games/geographygames/geospy/

This summer, we took one state a day and learned where it was. The kids colored that state in on a US map, and we read a little about it. (very brief) We would then quickly review the states we already knew. They now have most of them down, and it really only took a few minutes a day.

This year we are doing a states notebook. They do one state a week. I found the notebooking pages free online.

Also, here are a couple of online games that we like.

We've been working through The Little Man In the Map by region and filling out a HUGE 7ft. map of the united states as we go. The book is fun and we are all learning where the states are located. :001_smile:

We also like playing the Scrambled Mixed Up States game.

Just wondering where you found the huge map? I think this is something my kids would love! :)

Thanks!

Here is the site I printed it from. A Home For Their Hearts linked me to it when I asked a question about printing a large map. (Thanks, again, A Home For their Hearts!)

It was a booger to figure out how to cut it out and then to piece it together. :tongue_smilie:

Consider yourself warned! ;)

(PS...I am glad I did it though. The boys like having a HUGE map on their closet to fill out. :001_smile:)
