  1. Do I need the teachers guide for 1st grade science light units? I've only used the math, and those were self explanatory.
  2. My son went 3 years. Groups of about 15 kids, rotating to do lots of crafts, activities, games, etc. It was lots of fun, but he wasn't used to the structure. 6 hours was a very long day for him.
  3. I started my son with SSL in 1st grade. His memory was truly like a sponge, and I figured it was the best time to start with something easy and fun. After spending a total of 4 years getting through SSL 1 & 2, I've decided to back off. We kept getting behind, because of various reasons, and then would have to review in order to get going again. Eventually, I think he really just wanted to know what would happen to Simion in the videos. We've ended up spending a lot more time than I ever expected, getting him to start reading fluently in English, and that's definitely a priority over Latin. Now that he's a rising 5th grader, we really need to focus more on reading to learn, and catching up in writing. My plan was to start with Latin for Children next year, to continue with what he'd learned, but I think that the time needs to be spent elsewhere right now. Plus, with all the review needed because we haven't done any Latin in a few months, it won't be worth it. If we do any language next year, we may play around with Greek a bit. We'll be back in ancient history, and he's been really into the whole Percy Jackson thing, so it'll be fun. In a year or two, if things settle down, I'd love to get back to Latin, and definitely let him pick a modern language if he's interested. But we've got to get the rest of things under control first.
  4. At this time, I'm planning to reuse SOTW for Ancients at least. He started it in 1st grade, and we ended up skipping a lot. He wasn't comfortable with reading or writing at the time, so there's a lot more that we can do with it. We'll be able to use the encyclopedias and do more indepth stuff this time, because he can do so much more.
  5. We've used SOTW 1-3 over first thru fourth grades. I ended up rushing through a lot of year 1 because I wasn't very organized to keep moving all year. And year 2 ended up taking 2 years, because the first year was similarly slowed down. Year 3 has gone very smoothly, and I've got a routine figured out. :) But DS9 has asked if we can skip Year 4 and go back to Ancients. Due to a European vacation last summer, we've done a decent overview of WWI and WW2, and I wasn't planning to go very in depth to the 1900's because of the prevalence of wars, and political stuff. So what I'm thinking, is that after we finish book 3, we'll just go back and start over, with more organization. Is there anything from the modern era that we shouldn't miss right now? Does this sound like a reasonable idea?
  6. I had a Facebook friend who was in jail and hung himself. From what I can tell, he was an alcoholic who got enraged at his girlfriend and ended up keeping her and her teen daughter as prisoners for a couple of days. I think that when he sobered up, he realized that he'd basically lost everything and couldn't deal with it.
  7. My 8yo had loved it for the past couple of years. We first listened to Jim Weiss' recording of it. We also read a great book called The Shadow King. It's about a modern boy who switches places with a boy in Shakespeare's company. Gives a lot of insight to the time period and the play.
  8. I'm throwing him in the shower right now!
  9. I rarely see unscented deodorant. I'll have to look more closely. And definitely need to get on a better shower schedule!
  10. DH will retire at 48, and won't get any more by staying longer, and is already counting down the days. I'm sure he'll start working at something else, but it may be a business of his own, without medical. Well he be eligible for Medicare that young, to supplement?
  11. My DS is starting to stink. He'll be 9 in December, moderately active, showers 2-3 times a week. He should wash more often, but has really long hair and needs my help with it, along with needing it dry before bed. But he's still getting smelly. He doesn't like strong scents, so I think DH's Old Spice would be too much, and I don't even want him to think about Axe - ewww... I've considered my Suave ocean scent, but wonder if it's made more for females. What's something that will help, but not overpower him?
  12. My husband is eligible to retire in 4 years, with his full pension. Sometime in the past few years, the plan has changed so that he will still be covered by his insurance, and our 8yo will still be covered, but I won't. I guess I could be, but it would be nearly double the cost of his/son. He said that the only thing he can figure is that I need to be working someplace with full benefits. I've been a SAHM for nearly 8 years, and do home daycare to help with money, but of course there's no benefits. I'm only 41, so a long way to go until I'm eligible for Medicare. I'm not too up on what's going on with Obamacare/ insurance, etc. I guess his retirement still seems too far away to get worried, and I've been hoping that the next president will change things back so they make sense again? But it's stressing out DH, so it's going to stress me out too. What should I be expecting? Am I going to be essentially forced to work just to be covered? Is there much chance of his plan changing back to include the spouse? Ugh...
  13. This tour of Flanders Fields. http://travellingcalavera.com/2014/04/21/battlefield-tour-flanders-fields-quasimodo/ A full day, and I learned more about WWI than I ever learned in school, and I loved history. The man who gives the tour is a walking encyclopedia. My son is 8.5 and got a whole lot from the day.
  14. I know I've seen lists before, but I can't find them now that I'm looking to start movie nights. I'm looking for good, fun movies that kids ought to watch. My so is nearly 9, and likes lots of variety.
  15. I have a friend who's husband has a similar schedule. They just adjusted their sleep schedule to his. They would get up around 11, do group things, park, etc during early afternoon when other kids are around, then school when dad goes to work, and bed around midnight.
  16. We've done it. It's not hard. Basically any maple tree will work. Sugar maple just has a little bit sweeter sap. You tap the tree when the daytime temps start rising a little, but it's still cold at night. Once the tree starts budding you can't use the sap anymore. The tree uses it for food and it's not sweet anymore. I only tapped one tree. We had issues with it starting to heal quickly, and only got about a half gallon of sap. But it was enough to try out. I cooked it on my kitchen stove on medium heat. Basically a simmer. It steamed, but not badly; maybe because I wasn't cooking that much. You need to be careful as it finishes, or it will quickly burn. I once tried to get maple sugar, and that didn't go so well. The color changes as it cooks, and you take it off the heat when it gets to the right thickness. I'd guess mine cooked around 3 hours. I got enough for a couple pancakes - enough that DS could get a good flavor.
  17. I'm in Ohio, and we're required to teach for 900 hours. My first year, I kept close records, and found that after starting around the same time as the PS, we hit 900 before Christmas. No more worrying for me. Now, I'd we do a regular day. I count 6 hours, a light day is 2-3, an extra busy day might be 8-9. Since we read everyday, and he watches something educational everyday, there's at least an hour everyday without even trying.
  18. We only have 3 so far. I guess that would make sense!
  19. We are going to the Netherlands and Belgium and maybe a day trip into Germany this summer with DS8. We will visit the Anne Frank House and the Corrie Ten Boom house. I'm looking for something that tells the who, where and why of WW2, without getting into all of the atrocities. I've got some good books about those two people already, but not really about the war in general.
  20. Ours are in empty tin cans. Then those are put into a fabric or wicker basket on the table. If we need the table cleared, they are easily moved, or we just push them aside.
  21. My husband likes to spread cream cheese on a platter, lightly spread cocktail says on that, and scatter flaked imitation crab over the top. You scoop it up with Town House style crackers.
