Sun
My ds8 needs to learn his US states. Does anyone have any resource ideas that would be helpful for teaching this? He does not like coloring, so state coloring books are out! I particularly want him to learn where the various states are located.
Guest
Puzzles are great for this. The book Scrambled States of America is fun, and there's a card game to go with it.
meet me in paris
If you're just looking for placement, what about a puzzle like this one? There are also a bunch of online quizzes, like this one.
King Alfred Academy
We've been working through The Little Man In the Map by region and filling out a HUGE 7ft. map of the united states as we go. The book is fun and we are all learning where the states are located. :001_smile: We also like playing the Scrambled Mixed Up States game. SBP
Oooh. Sheppard Software was our BFF for this. My kids had to learn the states & capitals back when we were doing Classical Conversations, and this was SO painless. SBP
Corraleno
Oooh. Sheppard Software was our BFF for this. Great link — we will definitely use this! Geocards and Geopuzzles are another fun way to cover geography. Jackie
creekmom
This game is a lot of fun http://www.amazon.com/TaliCor-4100186-Snapshots-Across-America/dp/B000078VHP/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1282183512&sr=1-1 Also, this is a great website by National Geographic - you have 180 seconds to identify all the states. My kids LOVED this one! http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/games/geographygames/geospy/

nansk
I have not used this resource, just bookmarked it. You may find it useful as a supplement. Learn the states and postal abbreviations.
hmschooln
I can't recommend Audio Memory highly enough for learning the states. My ds had them down in first grade(okay and it might have helped me to recall the east coast state locations:blushing:). Love it!:001_smile: http://www.rainbowresource.com/product/Geography+Songs+Kit+with+CD/004851/1282191386-627149

Aconnolley
This summer, we took one state a day and learned where it was. The kids colored that state in on a US map, and we read a little about it. (very brief) We would then quickly review the states we already knew. They now have most of them down, and it really only took a few minutes a day. This year we are doing a states notebook. They do one state a week. I found the notebooking pages free online. Also, here are a couple of online games that we like. http://www.arcademicskillbuilders.com/games/penguin/penguin.html http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games.htm Angela

cjthedog64
We're collecting postcards from around the country and connecting them with a string to the location on a huge National Geographic map. Then we'll use books about interesting places in the state to give him an idea of what the state is like. DS is starting K.

King Alfred Academy
Here is the site I printed it from. A Home For Their Hearts linked me to it when I asked a question about printing a large map. (Thanks, again, A Home For their Hearts!) It was a booger to figure out how to cut it out and then to piece it together. :tongue_smilie: Consider yourself warned! ;) (PS...I am glad I did it though. The boys like having a HUGE map on their closet to fill out. :001_smile:) Edited August 19, 2010 by King Alfred Academy Wanted to give credit where credit was due!
