Maura in NY
...for high school. Just curious...here in NY it's not an option, and I wish it were. Maura
SkateLeft
Yes. MN allows for shared time arrangements as well as open enrollment if you don't like your neighborhood district. However, that's all dependent on whether or not the district feels they have enough space to accommodate your child. Some districts are so popular and/or so impacted that they can't accommodate a shared time arrangement.
rwjx2khsmj
Indiana does. My dd13 is taking band at the ps this year. Next year she will be taking band, French and Algebra. ETA: They don't allow sporty or extracurricular participation by homeschoolers though. Edited May 7, 2010 by rwjx2khsmj
NicksMama-Zack's Mama Too
My county allows it. It varies by county. I'm "enrolling" my oldest in 8th grade so he can take French I next year.
Heather in VA
I think so but what it doesn't allow, and I wish it did, it participation in the sports teams. Heather
Mrs Mungo
No. They are supposed to provide some services to special needs kids but I know parents who have been turned away even then.
MamaSheep
As I understand it, UT largely leaves that up to the school districts. Our school district seems to be very open to unorthodox arrangements.
galtgrl
No, although the individual school districts CAN allow it. Most don't. Sports participation is almost impossible.
TammyB
I don't think NC does. I've read our laws, and I haven't seen anything that says that is permissible.
Sunshine State Sue
FL does. You can go up to half-time. Of course, the public schools in FL are not so great, so I can't say it's that much of a benefit. OTOH, we've taken advantage of school sports, and I'm very grateful that ds is allowed to participate. Janet in WA
WA does -- both academic and extracurricular.
Splash
Yes, must take at least two classes though.
Night Elf
Georgia - no. Editing to add: a couple of years ago, I tried finding a private school that would allow us to do that, with no luck.
AnitaMcC
Our state allows part time enrollment in public schools for homeschoolers, at the discretion of school districts. But very few school districts allow part timers.
justamouse
Yes, my daughter attends the county tech for cosmo. Fight for it-I think it's very important for *some children* to be able to learn trades. College isn't right for all.
Chris in VA
I don't know if it's by state or county--Our county (Fairfax) allows up to 2 core classes (math, science, english, history/gov, foreign lang) taken at your local hs if there's room. You have to register by March 1, I think--No participation in anything else. You can sometimes get into a different school if yours is full. Blue Hen
In Delaware homeschoolers are on their own. We aren't permitted to participate in any school activities / classes / sports / arts..... The State requires all kids under 18 to take Driver's Ed through the public school. It's free for public school kids but private and hs'ers pay about $400 for the course. My PS refuses to let a hs kid into their classes.
Beth in TN
Not here in TN. We are a military family living off post, but if we lived on post our children would be able to attend any class at the DOD (Department of Defense) high school. I'm not sure about sports, but I believe homeschoolers can do things like ROTC, band, etc.
LisaKinVA
No. Here it's a county-by-county decision. And it's not allowed in my county.
tex-mex
In our area of TX... no. I understand some school districts in TX do welcome hsers, tho'.
LoriM
No, but the private school (where I teach) does allow part time students. We have an upper school student who has come only for Latin since she left our "full time" status in 5th grade. When we have our high school (beginning in 2011-12), I expect we'll pick up some area hsers for math. :)
