  1. The full program? With the KOGS? Not to be difficult, or to discount what you said, but I doubt that my NT children could have handled the compete program (i.e. understood and made the needed connections) in the third grade. If your children are highly gifted, then yes, I agree.
  2. Agreeing that the KOGS are a pita. RS4K Chem would be a much easier program to use if the information, activities and questions from the KOGs were just included in the chem textbook. That said it is a well rounded program when you use them with the text. I'm looking forward to going through it again next year with my middle schoolers.
  3. I have to say that I found RS4K to be a pretty good fit for Middle school Chem *IF* you use the whole program, i.e. you need to use the KOG books as well.
  4. This is how our extended family functions as well :)
  5. My reluctant reader (3rd grade) just discovered the Poppy series by Avi and loves it. He also loved reading The Littles and Gooney Bird Greene.
  6. Dory, she is adorable. Reminds me so much of my own girls at that age, with their white blond braids :) Congratulations to her on a job well done!!!!
  7. I recognized somebody from another forum once, and she went to my church! I outed myself to her because she was going through a REALLY rough time, that I wouldn't have known about otherwise. I truly just wanted to be there and be available to her, since we were already acquaintances, and I knew she needed the help. I'm glad that I did. I was able to be a friend and not feel fake or dishonest about it.
  8. This weeks happy thing for me are the leaves on the trees :) The winters are so long here, and then it takes for.ev.er for the trees to get leaves. Last week it rained and this week....full on bright green leaves :D We live in the middle of a large city, but all the side streets are lined with large old trees. They make green tunnels that we drive and walk down. So beautiful. ETA that everytime I go for a drive I think how much I love it here :)
  9. I don't know but it happens. We had a huge booksale at our church yesterday. Proceeds go to provide meals for the poor/homeless in our commuinty. Paperbacks were 50 cents and hardbacks $1. For reference we made about $800. That means that we moved a lot of books! We still refilled almost all the boxes afterwards o_O
  10. Having lived in the Southwestern United States for a significant portion of my adult life and then moving back east, it was very difficult to get used to non-walled yards again. It made me feel very exposed.
  11. I don't think he was trying to point out something that is wrong in the US, just different.
  12. I agree! We never participated in VBS when the kids were little because I just couldn't deal with the aftermath...
  13. Saxon does have a workbook for the upper levels (54 etc.) if you use the older hardback editions. They are called adaptation workbooks. They are basically just the problem sets from the text in workbook form.
  14. Not part of the modesty movement here. Until recently we lived in an area where kids could play outside year round w/o extra clothing. I did prefer to put my little girls in dresses just because they were super cute :) During the cooler months of the year I made them wear tights or leggings and during the summer they wore bike shorts underneath. This was only if we were heading to a place where they'd be hanging upside down, etc. At home I had no requirements. My girls are teens now, and they still will wear bike type shorts under their dresses if they are above the knee and flowy. I think they just feel more secure knowing none of their bits will be exposed by a sudden breeze. They also don't like slips.
  15. I've done all of mine through our umbrella school (school board). I was able to administer the CTBS & HLAT (grade 7&8) myself, and my younger children will be taking portions of the PATs (grade 3&6) at the school we're affiliated with. Though I'm not sure if this option is only open because we're registered with a public school board as our umbrella.
  16. Yes. This is exactly how I feel about it as well.
  17. For me the optimal co-op would one that met in two sessions, every other week. I'd like academic/arts classes in the morning and play/park/games in the afternoon. I wouldn't care if it was/wasn't religiously affiliated as long as there wasn't a required SOF. The reason I'd want one day every other week is because we get nothing done when we have half day activities anyway, so might as well only lose one day instead of two. On the off weeks there could be low-key, optional evening meet-up type activities, so that the dads and other non-homeschooled siblings could participate: things like skating (roller/ice), games at a park (soccer, b-ball, baseball, hockey etc.) that don't require a lot of conversation in order to participate, bowling, group bike rides....
  18. I had one like that. Sadly she outgrew it :( Once when she was about his age she had a little friend over and they sang their way through the day  i.e as they played dolls all the conversation was in song. So cute :)
  19. Our 17yo's phone was run over by a car, for the second time in less than a year, so she's w/o a phone until she comes up with the money for a new one ... I know that makes it sound like she's a risk-taker, but she's not, just very careless :001_rolleyes: Adding that they were pre-paid dumb phones w/ unlimited texting. eta that none of my younger children have phones. The 17yo is the only one that attends public school.
  20. Agreeing. The Jacksonville area is quite affordable and meets all her criteria.
  21. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us!
  22. Have you thought about giving him the end of the year exam just to see?
