pp said "SL is Christian....but they use so much secular stuff it's hard to wade your way through. So much old earth and evolution, so much talk over other gods. In just their kindergarten program. I'm all for my kids being inriduced to that. But when they are just 5 and 7 and I gotta explain daily why the book is wrong. It just doesn't work for me." I guess for me it is different. I heard only one side growing up and when evolution was introduced in school I made evolution fit in with scripture because teachers know everything, right? Sonlight is not meant to be done by the child on his or her own. It is meant to be parent directed and discussion will follow so that your child will be able to see all sides of the argument and then be able to choose wisely what he or she believes instead of just believing what mom or dad say. I chose Sonlight for this reason and it is so neat to have discussions with my 6 and 4 year old that I never had with my parents. Deb

Pulling 1st grader out of PS, need math advice please.....
budeb replied to smilesonly's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Sonlight sells a DVD called Mathtacular that shows all concepts that are taught in K - 2. I think they have one for grades 2 -4 too. I haven't seen these but have ordered one. Maybe just seeing something presented in a fun way would be an option. Singapore has a cd-rom with math games to play on the computer for that age level. You can get it at CBD.com or Sonlight. There are also free on line math games. Both my children learned to read through the Leap Frog videos... seeing them over and over... the same could be for math concepts. HTH, Deb -
I choose one letter that I see him (DS 6) printing awkwardly and then sit with him as he writes one line of that letter the correct way. Deb

This might be weird - VBS and non-Christians?
budeb replied to Mommy22alyns's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Your child is different from you and may really enjoy learning about God. If you don't want that... don't send them. It WILL arouse a curiosity and lots of questions.- 74 replies

If you do school at your table...
budeb replied to mom31257's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I don't have a photo... but I use the buffet that is in my kitchen against a wall to store all our books and supplies which includes a plastic 4 drawer storage container that holds sissors, pencils, elastics, etc. It is not used to store china or silverware. The doors are closed and you don't see a thing. I even have two decorative storage baskets of books shoved underneath the buffet so you can't see them. In one of the baskets I have the books we use everyday so they are easily accessible. You can't tell we homeschool at the table other than the crafts and creations stuck to one window of our patio door. HTH, Deb -
How do you explain your schooling choices?
budeb replied to abreakfromlife's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Homeschooling was foreign to me to until I stumbled upon it on the internet. Since I have done tons of research and reading I am confident in my decision. I don't expect others to understand or get it. I think what you have done or said in the past is good. It's enough. Just live your life and let the results of your children speak for themselves. Motivation...what did you do today?
budeb replied to Tree House Academy's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Motivation for me is to invite someone over for supper... someone I don't know well but want to get to know better. Believe me, it works. Another thing, I turn on a movie for the children and then have uninterrupted time to clean. Nothing is more discouraging than cleaning one area and knowing another area is being messed up. "If a man is incapable of being faithful, then he darn well best be capable of paying support, cause it would be the most expensive urge you ever had!" LOL... my thinking too. I trust my husband until he gives me reason not too. What a way to live if I had to watch his every move.

What are your favorite/least favorite Missionary Books
budeb replied to EricaB's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
The Trailblazer books by Dave and Neta Jackson are awesome. They are thrilling adventure stoies introducing young readers to Christian heros of the past. Deb -
Hymns for a Kid's Heart also comes with a CD inside of it. We read about one story a week and then play the CD at bedtime. I put it to the hymn we read about and play that first. Then they just listen to the rest of the CD whenever. I like the fact that the hymns are personalized by Joni Eareckson Tada. First you learn about the history behind the hymn and then Joni brings it to a personal level. HTH, Deb

Do your children eat between breakfast and lunch
budeb replied to love2read's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My boys 6 and 4 1/2 eat ALL day long... it seems. They do snack between meals. I make sure it is healthy... no junk, or it means they are not hungry if that is what they are after. Deb -
Hi there. I wouldn't start till grade two as the workbook can not be done without the teacher's kit. I bought the workbook and realized too late that I needed to pay 60 some dollars for the complete kit... and you NEED it in order for the workbook to work. However, if you DO want to buy the whole thing... I do have an unused workbook. HTH, Deb

Hi there! My six 1/2 y/o LOVES the Thornton Burgess books... there are a lot of them. He also has read the Boxcar Children books 1 - 19 are by the original author... the ones that follow are "created by"... meaning other authors have written the ones after book number 19. He LOVES re-reading "Little Pilgrim's Progress" by Helen L. Taylor... and any non-fiction books on animals and natural disasters like volcanoes. THT, Deb
