  1. That's exactly right. There are two components here. What you put on your transcript, and the test score. The College Board has gotten persnickety about courses listed as AP on a transcript. If you list the course on the transcript as you mentioned, you will be fine. The credit comes from the score, not the course. ;)
  2. While TOG is set up in a way that dialectic and rhetoric-level students work independently, it definitely does require a lot of mom leg-work, pulling together the books and preparing for the discussion (from the teacher notes) week to week. I love the planning part of school -- so I thought sleuthing for resources was fun. It might not be for everybody. ;)
  3. I think TOG is a great program for big families. It streamlines things for mom, with history as the spine. It is challenging, but flexible. I love the "real books" approach versus a textbook approach to history and literature. One of the strengths of TOG, IMO, is the discussions that a family can have -- with each level of student bringing his/her own facts and understanding to the mix (since each "level" is reading something different -- but in the same time period). It's great for a big family! ;) Best of luck!
  4. This sad and shocking article just came out about cheating in Atlanta schools: CRCT Report: Answers Changed At 'Erasure Parties' While I know cheating takes place -- sadly, that's life -- the extent of the cheating outlined here blows me away! How do we teach students not to plagiarize when teachers and principals are setting this kind of an example? ~Brigid
  5. It is so helpful when everyone shares information like this. It's great to know what has worked well! Thanks! :) And congrats!
  6. Wow! Thank you so much for posting this! I'm already seeing much that I can use next year. Terrific site! :)
  7. I imagine this will be too "young" for your needs, but we loved The Twenty-One Balloons -- a fictional story that includes the (real) volcano eruption on Krakatoa. A delightful story that won the Newbery Award. ;)
  8. Congrats! Susan Richman really does a great job with APUSH. My older son took her class several years ago and absolutely loved it. My younger is taking it this fall. I highly recommend this class! :)
  9. :iagree: You could start with SWI-C, and if you like it (and like the DVD approach), you could continue with SICC-C. There is a big re-sale market for IEW curriculum. It looks expensive, but it's easy to sell when you are finished with it. ;) --> Edit:  Oops, just saw that you posted your plans wicki859! Guess I'm stepping in late!
  10. I was elated with the 3 and 4 that came through when I called last night. :) A 3 is passing, and in some classes I can't ask for more than that from my guys. It is exciting to hear of all the high scores on this board. I think we should all nod our heads that we are doing a great job educating our kids.
  11. One of the challenges in choosing the AP/SATII route to take is you often have to make testing/transcript decisions before the college choices are clear. Some schools require SATIIs (Georgia Tech requires 3) from homeschoolers, so it makes sense to double up where you can (or it did to us) and cover the AP/CC and SATII in the same year, where possible. I don't know how much more common this is in the science/math area than the humanities. In our experience, my ds took AP/CC classes and then the AP exams in May -- and then prepped briefly for the corresponding SATIIs in June. That worked well for us in US History, Chemistry, Math 2 (he didn't take the Lit SAT II, because he only needed 3). Because my ds was applying to a range of schools with different requirements or expectations, it seemed like the logical approach. The junior year can be grueling -- test-wise -- so it helped us to take this approach. One family's experience. I hope this helps. :)
  12. Yikes! Good point! Here is info about revisions for the next two years: AP Changes
  13. You could submit your syllabus now. It would be authorized for 2011-2012 and then all you have do is hit the "resubmit" button (so to speak) in the spring/summer for you to be reauthorized for 2012-2013. ;)
  14. Congrats to you both! That's terrific! :001_smile: Here's hoping everybody gets great news!
  15. I've had good success buying and selling on Amazon. Especially high school texts that are very expensive. :) I buy and sell all my older (college) ds's books on Amazon.
  16. We did not use Pass/Fail. I put a grade on everything on the transcript. (Not the "right" way -- just how we did it.) For gym, I labelled my ds's class: "Elective: Physical Education - Year Round Swim Team" so that schools could see a level of rig . . . uh, effort ;) that I felt "deserved" a grade. As long as you have enough other graded credits, I don't think it will matter whether you give gym/health/SAT prep a grade or treat them as pass/fail. :) Also Health and PE are sometimes combined into one credit.
  17. Is this for the June ACT? The scores for the June 11 test are available online now. :) Or at least our ds's were available yesterday (I know sometimes they aren't all up at once).
  18. I think this was to me (about Hamlet). :) We memorized the first 21 lines of the soliloquy: "To be or not to be . . ." to "with a bare bodkin?" ;)
