  1. Another big-picture high school planning question: How much writing is your high school student doing, across all credits, on a weekly basis? I usually take SWB's recommendations as a starting place for what is desirable, but I wanted to check with BTDT folks and I really am interested in the range of answers, I know if will vary a lot. But, in her high school writing lecture, SWB suggests that a high school student should be producing 3 short papers a week: 2 persuasive essays across the curriculum, and one literary analysis paper. In addition they should do a longer research paper, which gets longer as high school progresses. 3 papers a week seems like a lot to me. Writing in 3 subjects, sure, but 3 polished essays each week? That would definitely be a big ramp-up in writing pace. We could do it, but it would take a *lot* of time, (if we're talking about fully polished essays, as opposed to more informal responses/journal entries/essay questions) which would definitely reduce the rate at which we cover subjects and how much we get through over the course of the year. So, I'm curious: how much are your students writing, per week, in high school? How long do they take to produce a finished essay? If they are taking online classes, how much writing is assigned in the various classes? TIA!
  2. What resources do you use to teach writing for high school? If someone took away all of those resources except one, which one would you want to be left holding? What one practice do you feel has contributed to your student's success as a writer? If you could do it all over again, would you do anything differently? If so, what?   3. If you use a prepared curriculum (A Beka, BJU, CLP, MODG, TOG, online class, etc.) could you give me a list of the type/length of writing assignments for the 9th and/or 10th grade year. We've always done WTM, so I have no idea what a typical high school English course looks like. :confused: Thanks in advance. :D

  5. As a spin off of this thread, what are some alternatives to note card organization? My ds has a hard time with handwriting, and I'd like to allow him to type. However, I like the note card idea and want to try it with him this week. I know we could print on index cards, but the whole set up and changing the printer could be very distracting to him. Is there a template for index cards? Should I just make a table? Has anyone used Evernote for research notes?
  6. I have a problem. I am not very confident in my teaching writing to my 15y.o. dd. We've struggled in this area for a long time. That coupled with the fact that I have a special needs son who requires a lot of time, has left me feeling anxious about her writing abilities with only a few years left of HS for her. She is very bright and really does do a decent job of writing, but I really feel like I've let her down in that area and I am looking for a solid program that will help solidify a good foundation for her before she heads off to college. I am afraid when asked to write for school, (or worse the SAT) that she won't know what to do or how to approach the assignment. The program we have on our shelf currently is Writeshop. It's OK. Maybe it's something I'll use with my son, but I find it to be a bit of a pain to flip back and forth through ALL of those sections to find the information I want. We really put it off this year and did not accomplish as much as I would have liked to. I am curious about your thoughts on Writeshop, Understanding Writing, and IEW. Please understand that she is 15, going in to 10th grade, and has not had a classical education. I do use a modified classical approach with my son. If there are any other programs out that that you might want to bring to my attention I am willing to hear any suggestions. Thanks for your time!
  7. Ds is starting 9th grade this fall, and we really need to focus on writing. We worked thorugh Windows to the World this past year. It was a fabulous program, but he still struggles with writing, requiring mutilple drafts per paper and working at a very slow pace. He is very bright, but dislikes writing (and writing is NOT my strength). I have Lively Art of Writing, Art of Argument, and Rhetorical Devices, as well IEW's Elegant Essay. I was planning on using these this school year, but now I am wondering if he should take an outside class. I really only need the writing component, as his grammar and vocabualry are excellent (we just received his ACT scores and he scored a 35 on the English section). I thought about using Write At Home as I have seen good reviews on these boards. So I thought we could: 1) Go ahead and use the above books mixed with the TOG assignments (we will be doing Year 1 this coming year) and do the pay for paper option with Write At Home. 2) Have ds do a full course with Write At Home OR 3) Any other suggestions? We have used IEW a great deal up to this point, and I just feel like he needs more :tongue_smilie:. Thank you in advance!!
  8. I've been giving some thought to the differences between Classical Writing and Writing with Ease. I've just listened to the audio lectures, we use WWE 3 with my ds, I've used the WTM methods with dd, and I tried CW last year. SWB says that both methods end up with the same progymnasmata skills, and I trust her on this. Her method in many ways is more appealing. It's not a separate "program" and is used across the curriculum and builds up gradually. I really liked some parts of CW, mostly the sentence shuffle thing. So much of it (we used Homer A) seemed so laborious and tedious--dividing a narrative into scenes, accidental components--it was our undoing. What concerns me about the WWE approach is the thing I liked best about CW. CW has that working with words thing going on--rewriting the sentence in many different ways, using synonyms, etc. I don't see this in the WWE approach--just lots of outlining and rewriting. When does the child develop "style," is that even the right word for it? Am I missing something here? I'm contemplating putting my dd back in Homer OB next year, online, because there's no way I am going to teach it. She also listened to the lecture and now thinks SWB's way is the way to go. ;) Thoughts, ideas, any help appreciated!
