  1. It can be pretty bad depending on the strength of the storm. I've lived in South Florida my whole life and have been through quite a few harrowing ones. Hence the reason for this thread. This is what hurricane Charley did to the island of Captiva on Florida's Gulf coast in 2004.
  2. That sounds really good. Thanks so much for sharing it.:)
  3. I have a method where I would use adobo, pepper, oregano flakes and garlic powder sprinkled on both sides of the chicken breasts and then put a little bit of oil maybe 1-2 Tbsp and a pinch of sugar. When the sugar turns color, add the breasts and let them brown on either side. Remove pan from heat and take out the breasts and slice them into slivers or chunks (whichever you prefer) and then add them back to the pan with the peppers, minced onions, minced garlic maybe a pinch of rosemary and some parsley flakes (1-2 Tbs) add enough chicken stock to cover the meat and some cream (1-2 Tbsp), cover and let it simmer until it reduces and is a nice sauce. When finished turn off the heat, throw some parmesan cheese (generous amount) into the sauce, give it a quick stir and pour over the pene. Mix her up and she's good to go. With a nice salad and some bread on the side you have a nice quick meal. :)
  4. We started Singapore with 4A&B and I didn't buy the HIG, but I wish I had. At least for 4B. There were some word problems that even I had trouble figuring out towards the end of 4B. When I ordered 5A&5B I ordered the instructor's guides too and haven't looked back. They've been a tremendous help to me. They have all the answers in them for the textbook and workbook exercices, practices and reviews which makes them a breeze for me to grade and also they show the problems worked out for the more complex ones so that has been a big help for me in teaching them. I always buy the HIG"s now. :)
  5. Oh thank you for the information about the Singapore forum. I didn't even know that had one. :)
  6. Oh thank you so much ladies. :) :grouphug: I've been praying everyday and I will keep praying until the season ends. Thank you all for joining me. :) :grouphug:
  7. I always appreciated onsies, those crew socks from JC Penney (they stay on really well), diapers, wipes and receiving blankets. It seems those were the items I always needed the most of. :)
  8. Thanks. :) I think I will just phrase it in a way to convey the message to "love the sinner, hate the sin" you know? So she doesn't get the idea that it is okay to hate any group of people. :)
  9. That is an excellent suggestion, Laura. Thank you so much. I wonder if that just might help things. I will try that for sure. :)
  10. Ay, I'm wondering if I should be scared now. I bought NEM for my daughter for 7th grade next year, but she is NOT a mathy kid. Will this program be too difficult for her? She has had some struggles with the word problems in the Primary series.
  11. More Hillsongs. They're so beautiful. Enjoy. :) Do any of our Aussie friends here go to this church? It must be an amazing experience! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eiy3_KRKNaQ
  12. Ay, I was hoping we would be able to get more ladies praying. Hopefully there are some who will pray but do not want to draw attention to themselves. At any rate, Christ says that where two or more are gathered in His name, He is there in the midst and we have that. :) I thank you ladies, from the bottom of my heart for your commitment to pray with me these next months. :grouphug: God bless you all. :)
  13. Oh I'm so encouraged to hear this!! I just got CLE for my daughter to supplement her Singapore next year. Thank you for putting my mind more at ease. LOF has been a GREAT one for us. My daughter LOVES it! :) She also likes Spelling Power a lot. :)
  14.:lol::lol: Oh my gosh you are trying to kill me!! I totally choked when I read that I was laughing so hard! hehehehehe I LOVE the Godfather movies! hehehe "Monday, Wednesday, Saturday...." hehehe I thought of another rule.... Turn the lights on!! The one who walks around in the dark ALWAYS gets killed! hehe
  15. I'm so very sorry. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: I will be praying for Casey and her family and for you as well. :grouphug:
  16. Oh thank you so much, Carrie, for your reply. Does this book The Hiding Place show ordinary Germans trying to help the Jews?
  17. Thank you, Laura, for your reply. I actually have tried to take that tack with her as well. Being that we are in Florida and we had Jim Crow laws here I told her about segregation and Rosa Parks etc. I told her about how her own grandmother (my mother) lived in segregated communities when she was growing up. I even told her how ridiculous it all was that Ray Charles (who my dd likes a lot btw) was in a segregated school for the blind in St. Augustine. Segregating kids who cannot even see color!! How ridiculous is that. My husband is mixed black, white and Indian and I told my daughter that had she been alive during the time that she would have been discriminated against because of the "one drop" rule and that she would be considered black. Her response, was "That's why I like black people better than white people" I'm sure that this is just a stage that she is going through (at least I HOPE so). I know that with her Autism, OCD and ADHD that she has trouble processing things and she sees things in a very black and white way (no pun intended), but this line of thinking REALLY troubles me. I want to nip it in the bud if I can, but I just feel at a loss as to how to make her understand. sigh.
  18. Oh thank you so much for your beautiful words. I have told her the same thing. My best friend's family was torn apart by the Berlin wall. She was on the East side with many of her relatives on the other. She and her family actually defected in Canada and then came to the US. I actually met her in school when she had just come to this country. There was a boy in one of my classes who was Jewish and he knew she was my friend and everytime he saw me he would ask me how "my friend the Nazi" was doing. I used to tell him off and that she wasn't even alive then (I wasn't a Christian yet then) but I remember the shame she felt when people would say things like that to her. I've told my daughter this, but I guess she's just too fixated right now and not seeing anything else. I will have her read your post though. I think it will help if she hears it from someone else. :) Thank you. :)
  19. How did you children like using the Trail Guides? Up until now, I just have my daughter find things on the map or on the globe while were reading other things and when we finish a book, I have her draw a picture of something that symbolizes the story and then stick it on the map where the story took place. That's fine and all, but I feel like we need something a little more subtantial now. :) Thank you everyone for all of your help and wonderful suggestions. :) Blessings, Jennifer
  20. How you got through that sentence without adding "oh my" is amazing to me. hehe I KNOW that I wouldn't have had that much self control. I would have been too compelled to say it! ;) :D hehehe You're obviously A LOT more mature than I am! :) :grouphug:
  21. My 11 yo dd hasn't started yet although she is already well into puberty. She is very tall, taller than a lot of grown women already and she weighs over 100 lbs.
  22. Thank you for your reply. Can you suggest any book titles??
  23. I bought my 11 y.o. daughter the Indiana Jones book series earlier this year to support my son's school book fair. Well, long story short, she never knew about Nazi's before reading the books and she became completely fixated on them. (She's got OCD) Well, she started googling them and reading articles on Wikipedia and asking me a million questions about Nazis. I've explained to her who they were and what they believed and that they were defeated in WWII. I thought that would be the end of it and then just the other day we were talking about Germany and she says in disgust, "Ug! I HATE Germans!" Well needless to say I was shocked and upset so I asked her why she would say such a thing and she says she hates Germans because of the Nazis. I explained to that only some of the Germans were Nazis and that a lot of Germans did not agree with their philosophies, but were subject to the Nazis because they were in power. I told her that to hate a entire group of people just because they are German is prejudice and it is wrong. I told her that prejudice is extremely dangerous because you no longer see people as people, but rather as the thing that they are. I told her that Hitler himself was prejudiced against the Jews and look at the horrors that that prejudice caused. She said she knew that I was right, but that she still hates Germans! YIKES!! Have any of you had to deal with this before? How did you handle it? I"m really at a loss here... Thanks to all who reply.
  24. Thanks. :) I guess I should get Starbucks then. Between you and me (we won't tell anyone else here ;) ) I think Starbucks coffee stinks! hehe I like Dunkin Donuts' coffee much better. But who am I to argue the majority. :) I guess I'll get her Starbucks. :) Thx. :)
