  1. The Bic brand works just fine for us. I just bought a couple 8-packs for 1.20 at Target. We use both the .5mm and .7mm.
  2. One more thing...don't confuse History Odyssey with Human Odyssey. The former is a curriculum, the latter is a text (actually three by k12, one by a fellow named Spielvogel used in high school.)
  3. All of the above. You can purchase single on-line courses directly from k12 with or without a teacher. The Human Odyssey text that you've been hearing about is used in their world history courses beginning in middle school. Some just purchase the textbook (on the used market or directly from k12) and use is as they would any other spine. There is a student packet and teacher guide that can be used along with the textbook. I believe if you purchase from the k12 store those are included in the price ($99 for the textbook). Hope that helps.
  4. When purchasing a course that more than one student will be studying, do you purchase for each student or can you use one course for two students? It doesn't look to be designed this way so I'm wondering how often this is done for frugality sake and what problems arise. Also wondering if it's even legal. Thanks!
  5. lychee I've seen them canned here but never fresh. I want to peel and eat!
  6. I used it in the middle grades as extra reading. It's well-written and the boys enjoyed it. I think it makes a great supplement to SOTW, Famous Men of Greece/Rome and a history encyclopedia. (I never was successful at using just one history resource!) We still take it off the shelf to read. It's one of those books we'll probably not ever sell. Very enjoyable. (I would add that we much preferred the Oxford book to Van Loon's Story of Mankind.)
  7. Henle and Lingua Latina. Why? Because it's just what we need at this point. I like Henle's progression and the boys are finally old enough for the "textbook" look. They previously worked through LC I and II and one year of Latin Prep.
  8. I think I'd be creeped out. Does everyone look healthy, happy? Do you ever talk to them?
  9. I probably wouldn't start my Latin adventures with Latin Prep. It's a great program but requires you to already know how to study the language, i.e., how to memorize forms, etc. I think you're most likely to be successful using Latin Prep if you begin as an older student or have completed a gentler introduction first like Latina Christiana. It's been a long time since I've looked at Latin For Children but I do recall that the program does a good job of teaching you how to learn the material and that it was engaging. Perhaps someone who has used the program can chime in. I had the materials and after looking them over returned them. This was years ago and I honestly can't remember why! Sorry. Our sequence has been Latina Christiana, Latin Prep 1 and now we're using Henle.
  10. Uh...no. Even if it were MY canning job, I wouldn't eat it. Two years would be the maximum shelf-life I'd consider safe, but even then, I'd wonder as I was swallowing...
  11. Totally agree re Sandra. Just watched the episode on-line and loved how she messed with Russell. Was anyone else surprised how Colby treated his brother during the challenge? Haven't seen the whole season but thought this was not in keeping with the Colby I remember from years ago. Also thought Rupert's noisemaking while everyone was trying to sleep was hilarious. He's an interesting fella, to say the least.
  12. I sort of embrace the daydreaming. I think it's good for the brain. There are times, though, that I try to rein it in by not allowing schoolwork to be done in the bedrooms, setting time limits for the work, etc. I just see it as a natural part of childhood and recognize that the school day might take longer because of it. As the kids get older they realize this, too, and are more motivated to stay on task.
  13. Aldi is the only place I've seen where the shredded cheese is cheaper than the block cheese, ounce per ounce. If you care about additives and preservatives be certain to read the labels on your dairy products. I stopped buying their half & half after I read the ingredients and noticed an expiration date six months into the future! I like my half & half to be just that: half milk and half cream. Their frozen orange juice is delicious. Aldi is a wonderful place but I especially love it because I can be in and out in 20 minutes.
  14. Sadly, I think the writers have bitten off more than they can chew. The parody quoted a few posts up rings true--we've all experienced whiplash trying to keep our eyes on the moving target of who's important, who's got the answers, who's really in charge. I was looking forward to watching the older seasons again after the finale but now I'm wondering if it will even interest me. I'd be nice to hear some Sawyer-isms again, I suppose.
  15. :iagree: Especially as a read-aloud--it just doesn't work. I was constantly stopping and having to show the words on the page to the boys so they would get the joke. Just doesn't work unless you can see the words since most of his jokes are homonyms. That got old really quickly!
  16. Yup. No one interrupts or disrupts without consequence here. I also usually don't answer the phone during the day.
  17. What kind of smell is it? Musty? Pet? Earthy? Is any part of the house over a crawl-space? If your crawl-space is not sealed then you'll have a musty/earthy smell. We've lived in our house for nearly six years and it still smells "old" when it's been closed up for a couple days or when the humidity is high. All the old carpet is gone, ceiling panels have been removed, woodwork has been washed, walls have been painted, etc. You could try placing charcoal inconspicuously in various places and see if that helps. Otherwise grind some coffee--that aroma usually sticks around most of the morning here! Good luck.
