  1. How many hours is enough? I am hoping to start from seed for the first time this year, and now I'm really nervous!
  2. And why is color something that shouldn't be seen, as though it is bad or embarrassing? ;)
  3. He's bored out of his mind. Of course he's not paying attention. Pull him out, and do some reading on gifted kids. Once he has work that is both mentally and age appropriate, then see if his attention level is age-appropriate.
  4. Saturate the hair with tap water before going in the water so the salt water can't absorb and affect the hair, and then coat with the conditioner.
  5. I have wanted to adopt so badly that it has made me cry, for 12 years now. I try not to think about it anymore because there is no way we will ever have that kind of money. If you have any ideas, I am interested in hearing them in a PM. :) Sorry for the hijack!
  6. Writing is such a huge part of high school, especially at a rigorous institution. It sounds like it would be difficult for her to succeed in that environment so soon, although stranger things have happened. Also, why have her feel she has to act older than she would have otherwise? She'll outgrow the dolls soon enough; why let peer pressure have any influence on that? I agree with others that you should see if the school can accomodate her math level. Is there a way to take a placement test? Could the math classes at this school also be more difficult, even though they are named the same as what you are doing? How convenient would that be! LOL
  7. You are in a much more diverse environment than many! That will be of great benefit. A child is better off with a white parent than no parent at all. Just work hard to be open to learning and growing beyond your comfort zone. Learn about proper skin and hair care. Get comfortable talking about race. Be aware of the cultural impacts of your own race in your life (white is a culture, too!). Andrea Lowry, your dd is beautiful, wow. You are so fortunate to be able to adopt! I wish we had the money. :(
  8. I work in a home that does foster care, and they refer to each other as foster brothers/sisters. I feel like it is only limiting and "less than" if you make it that way. If it's good to be a sibling, but bad to be called a foster sibling, is it then bad to be a foster sibling? If you treat the children the same, that is what will teach them that blood doesn't determine love.
  9. As my Greek phonetic abilities seem to have drained out of my head the past couple years (I maintained them almost ten years with no practice, so not too bad!), your transliteration is just fine with me! LOL Thanks!
  10. How would one say "sleeping in/late" or "we sleep in/late" in Latin or Greek?
  11. My dd is going to marry a man who has one full blooded Swedish parent, and one from somewhere in Africa where they have very dark skin. This way, we reinfuse the Swedish blood into the family... and I get really cute grandkids. Not sure how that fits your statement, but you know. ;) I really need to start saving up for her Swedish semester abroad.... :tongue_smilie:
  12. Probably not when you factor in the broth... although you could use boullion, I suppose!
  13. What's stupid is that I am now going to obsess about trying homemade ramen.
  14. When I was in India, crossing the street, when vehicles would come, I froze in the middle of the street because I would second guess which way they would drive past me. I figured one person moving around a stationary object was better than two moving objects moving to the same side!
  15. Any good resources or advice on teaching this? Child is a preteen with less obvious FAS who is intensely uncomfortable with most feelings. I have come to learn that being unable to identify emotions can be a part of FAS, which would explain the avoidance, even from positive feelings sometimes. Anger, anxiety, and fear would be especially useful, but knowing positive emotion descriptions would provide balance! I need very specific, clear markers that I can teach the child to look for. Thanks!
  16. You actually did it!! :smilielol5: You have an absolutely adorable voice, but yes, you are saying the word wrong! LOL
  17. Shoot, I don't want to jump around for MY sake, not hers! :smilielol5: It's too much planning! I don't even care if she knows this stuff right now. She is excited about it though, so we will start earlier than planned, why not? I think I'm just going to teach the parts of speech, including the grammar memory work in FLL, and post again if I'm not sure where to go from there. I'm just having a hard time wrapping my head around the process. If she can identify the parts of speech, then we diagram... then what? Is that it, when addressing grammar as a topic separate from writing? Punctuation would be taught with writing... Is that all I'm trying to do here? It can't be that simple, or there wouldn't be so many curricula!
  18. My aunt was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. They wanted to take out her thyroid. Doing very basic research online, I found the link between hypothyroidism, which is an autoimmune disorder, and vitamin D deficiency. She started laying in the sun every day in just shorts and her bra (no close neighbors!). A year later, her thyroid levels were normal.
  19. It's the writing portion of MCT that people say really ramps up quickly, isn't it? I just don't want to do a bunch of skipping around, it takes too much energy. This thread has made me realize how stupid it is to stay on a topic for 40 lessons just to stick with the curriculum. :bored: I'm going to have to let go of my plans, aren't I? :boxing_smiley:
  20. I'm already seeing the repetitiveness by lesson 3. Dd said, "Why are we doing this again?" I think I'm going to use it as a frame, and will do my own thing based on the topic of the day. I'm happy to hear the diagramming is going over well! I shouldn't be surprised, I suppose. Dd ends up enjoying things that I wasn't even going to formally teach until years later sometimes, and it takes me by surprise every time! Duh.
