  1. I'll at least give you a bump :) Due to the discrepancies between calc courses, you would want to hang on to the course description published in the course catalog. This shows the topics that should have been covered in the class. A semester long calculus class would roughly correspond to AB calc and two semesters would be BC in my understanding (which is likely out of date at this point). If you can get good information on who would be a good instructor at the cc, taking calculus with an instructor could be better for learning the material. For college acceptance, I'd prefer taking the AP exam - or take the cc course for familiarity and then plan on retaking it at the university. Good luck.
  2. My son has enjoyed the How to Train a Dragon series, Warriors, and lately, 39 Clues.
  3. When I got married we were moving across country within two weeks of the wedding. We didn't register for anything. I would have been very happy with just receiving a card (no thank you to write!). Cash or gift certificates were also very nice. I considered a gift of $100 to be an extravagant gift. This was 18 years ago... but situations sound similar. I think the travel itself to celebrate can be viewed as the gift (and it's how I'd have viewed it as the bride).
  4. And that's why I despise FOIL. It only works for binomials. It's also just a special case of the distributive property which works for all polynomial multiplication. FYI - Use the carat (shift-6) to represent an exponent: (2y-3)^2 *(2y-3)^2 would be your original problem
  5. I went to college in Santa Barbara. I really miss their bike paths. Most were separate from the road so you had a median between you and the drivers. My husband and I were almost hit by a driver pulling out of a gas station earlier in the week when she never looked to the right where we were standing on the sidewalk. Yes, bicycles have the same rights as cars on the roads as long as there isn't a restriction (like on the highway). Drivers of cars need to put down their cell phones, newspapers, and focus on what they're doing. :glare:
  6. Bayside for CAT or TerraNova. They are a former homeschooling family. Good people(my sister's in laws). I've also used Triangle for ITBS.
  7. Vodka, find some chocolate... And you might want to reconsider the duct tape. Hope tomorrow is better.
  8. My son seems to be one of these. I think he may be a changeling.
  9. Yup. Sometime you may need to play a bit of phone tag to get someone helpful or get to the right department.
  10. You might call the cc ... Maybe disability services... See if they have any suggestions or resources.
  11. I know. I wish they had the lists. They also don't do such a good job with errata for science and responses aren't as quick on their science boards as on their math boards. I have been pleased with MPH overall - especially the HOTS & tests. It isn't as open & go as I'd like (or not for me). BTW - welcome to the boards :)
  12. He's in a kilt in The Avengers. (link to trailer... the best part of the movie) When we actually watched the movie, my husband begged to leave. Later Connery movies are very hit or miss and the misses (like this) are practically unwatchable. Case in point: (which I think is where dh actually left). I grew up watching Moore as Bond and liked him, but after reading Importance of Being Earnest, I just can't look at Moonraker the same way anymore. I voted for Brosnan, but Connery is a very close second. I enjoyed Dalton, although his second is pretty unwatchable. The very worst movie IMO was The World is Not Enough. Love most of the actors, but almost walked out... could NOT get past Denise Richards.
  13. CYCLES 1.1 - written only 1.2 written only 2.1 - magnifying glass, tiger lily (idea is to dissect a flower) 2.2 - tomato seeds, garden soil, transparent plastic pots, 50 ml beaker (graduated cylinder or measuring cup should be fine) 2.3 - green bean seeds, cotton wool, 2 petri dishes 2.4 - magnifying glass, fern leaf with spores 3.1 - 3.3 - written only 4.1 - plastic wrap, hot water, cold water, magnifying glass, 2 clear plastic cups 4.2 (diagram of their setup on p22): retort stand, temperature sensor, crushed ice, glass funnel held in ring stand (so need clamp), 4 petri dishes that fit on top of 2 beakers [this one is more tricky to set up at home] 4.3 - (diagram on p24: also more tricky at home) ring stand (retort stand), tripod, lab thermometer held in ring stand (so need clamp), wire gauze, bunsen burner, beaker, tripod, glass funnel 4.4 - 3 identical handkerchiefs: hang on stand in corner of room, outside, and inside in front of a fan (idea to see length of drying time... so need way to attach them to dry in similar way) 5.1 - petri dish that fits over beaker (that holds over 200 ml... but shows no pour lip... idea for evaporation... I plan to use just a drinking cup but measure amount of water poured in) 6.1 - 3 100ml beakers, 300 ml pond water, liquid detergent, cooking oil, water plants (like duckweed or hydrilla) 6.2 & 6.3 - written only There's also definitely more writing in the activity books in 5/6 than in 3/4. Hope you enjoy whatever you choose :)
  14. FYI - if you just use the textbook and activity book, it is pretty basic. The HOTS and Tests really are a stretch mentally and I think add a LOT to the program. I use the text, activity book, homework book, HOTS, Tests, and teacher's guide. 5/6 does expect you've used 3/4 and recall that material - it's a very brief review (2 pages) at start of each book that recalls material from 3/4. The idea with MPH seems to be that the text/activity book is a springboard for further exploration. If you haven't used it before, you may want to read a bit more on the boards here doing a search for "singapore science", "MPH" or "MPAH". I tagged a number of threads last year with tags, so clicking at the bottom of one that's tagged should bring up additional discussions that may be helpful. (Cycles list to come...)
  15. We've still got Energy to finish up from 3/4, but I also plan to do Systems & Cycles from 5/6 next year. I just wrote up what they want - and placed my order with Home Science Tools :) Systems 1.1 - celery, red & blue food coloring, 2 1000ml beakers (size isn't essential) 1.2 - written only 2.1 - transparent plastic cup, straw, 2 balloons (one to fit over end of cup), clay, measuring tape 2.2 - 100 ml beaker, 1.5 L plastic bottle with cap, permanent marker, 50 cm long rubber tube 2.3 - fish (looking at gill structure...we'll go to aquarium or grocery store and look) 3.1 - written only 3.2 - clay, toothpick 3.3 - written only 4.1 - microscope, microorganism slides of pond water organisms (prepared slides) 4.2 - microscope, toothpick, blank slides, cover slip, iodine solution, elodea leaf, onion cell 4.3 - microscope, blank slide, cover slip, nail polish, leaf, forceps 4.4 - use food to make a cell model 5.1 - D battery, wire, bulb, magnifying glass 5.2 - D battery, 3 wires, 3 wires with alligator clips at end, bulb, cardboard, steel paper clips, masking tape 6.1 - 4 D batteries in battery holders, bulb in bulb holder, connecting wires, magnifying glass 6.2 - 3 D batteries in battery holders, 3 bulbs in bulb holder, wires 6.3 - D battery in battery holder, 2 bulbs in bulb holder, connecting wires 7.1 - 2 D batteries in battery holders, bulb in bulb holder, wires, class objects (stuff you find around your house)
  16. We may be a few lessons behind you in LfC A. I'm doing the work alongside my son, so I think it helps when he sees how I study to learn the material and how I takle the translations. Then I'm able to point out exactly what I'm doing and he can see how and why we do all the memorization. Of course, we haven't done Latin in a while and when I came across "Cum tacent clamant" in CE2 and pointed it out, he'd completely forgotten it. So we'll be talking more about the difference between short term and long term memory.
  17.:party::party::party: Well done. My husband started running about a year ago. I go for some of his cool down walks with him :001_smile: Good luck with the half marathon!
  18. Calvert may be worth investigating.
  19. Right before my undergrad graduation at 22. Dh had graduated the year before and was 23. It was a busy time... We got married, 2 weeks later I graduated, 2 weeks later we moved across the country. 18 years married tomorrow :) Met when I was 16 and he was 18.
  20. I generally buy direct from Singapore Math. I've had good customer service (once had book that had misprinting and the return/replacement went smoothly). They also have forums for specific questions, an errata list, and I've found pricing works out about the same overall as at Rainbow Resource.
  21. :grouphug: Hope next week has as much joy as this week had cr@p. On the plus side, you made it through the week! :grouphug:
  22. I thought OPs child was in the correct grade for age. In my state the cutoff is Sept 1. My son has a late August birthday, so he is in the correct grade for his age. We just finished 4th grade and are about to start 5th. He will start 6th at 10. We are also talking about doing a repeat so he'd be the oldest rather than the youngest. But it would be the repeat that's messing with official grade level in our case. I'd want the repeat sooner rather than later for testing purposes and for high school courses. I also like the idea of my son going to college at 18 rather than 17.
