  1. You do need a good bit of space with the Kinect. We have eight feet from the sensor and I'd like a bit more space to have two people play comfortably. The xbox gets used more than the wii overall.
  2. In our area, I can cut any parts of trees that overhang our property line.
  3. We've just gotten a special dessert before and shared it after the boy is asleep. :D
  4. I don't know if we'll use Singapore MPH 5/6 or CPO in 5th. For those looking, here's a school district that has PDFs of the CPO science student books. (I forget who linked it initially... it's in one of the CPO threads... and thanks to whoever that was :) )
  5. I don't believe so. You have to have a BA/BS and there are some state restrictions: Administrator Requirements: B.A. or B.S. degree Restrictions: Is not available for NJ (Grades 8-9), SC (Grade 2), and Dallas ISD. From here. When I bought the materials, I did have to say I had a BA but I didn't have to produce any documentation. I don't recall any statement when I filled out the purchase order that said I homeschooled (but it likely wouldn't have registered if I did). I do think that if there were a homeschool only requirement, they'd have it listed. I am not in NC, so that wasn't an issue. I know NC requires testing annually, so the two testing companies I've used (Triangle & Bayside) are both out of NC.
  6. I had good service from them this year. I used the ITBS and CogAT. I had questions a couple of different times & called & emailed & they were very helpful and professional. Very pleased.
  7. Northwestern's NUMATS program? Also does EXPLORE but earlier... I think we're trying it this year.
  8. I was in a MEGSSS program for a couple of years. The EM books are seriously good but also (I think) tough to do on your own at home. I've posted some about them over the years... search for IMACS or Elements of Mathematics or MEGSSS. I have an undergraduate major in math - and the logic I did with the EM books in 7th and 8th grades was what I did in my first year of undergraduate work. I don't know how eIMACS works and wasn't able to see enough on their site. You can buy the EM books through them, but you can't get any ancillaries which makes it tough... I don't have copies of my old tests & they were good with challenges. I'm torn between using the EM books or AoPS when my son gets through Singapore. I haven't seeing an AoPS book yet but I'm planning on getting their prealgebra book when it's published.
  9. I remember in high school in SC having heat days and getting out early a couple of days. The school building was one that was built before AC, but I don't think they were in session in August back then! (We had AC but when it went out for about a week, they let us out a couple of days when it got above 90 in the classrooms.)
  10. I carried around Tums for the heartburn. I could get heartburn from drinking water. The Tums definitely helped. (And I had nausea through the whole pregnancy. Fun. :glare:)
  11. We're back at it. Took May off (yea) and have completed our first week of 4th grade now (counting by days). It's taken us three years, but we're finally in a bit of a routine now! Hopefully this year will go smoother.
  12. I also had my son put up the tiles for a while so he had practice with alphabetizing.
  13. No help, but *bump*. Also, you may want to post on the Accelerated Learners board. May be more likely to get replies there...
  14. We switched to AAS in 2nd grade as well. It's been a good fit for us as well.
  15. I had it happen with a large price item. If you think you might miss the delivery, I'd leave a note on the door saying you refuse delivery. I know sometimes UPS just drops things off to us without a knock. Amazon was great about the whole thing.
  16. We used Island level last year. The Basic homeschool package has what you need - teacher's manuals for books that can work with just them, teacher & student books for ones that need both (Practice books in particular). I like supplementing with Rex Barks for sentence diagramming. The Elementary Curriculum Guide shows MCT's recommendations on when to implement parts of the program (towards bottom of page). There's a support group (forums) through the Royal Fireworks page and a yahoo group (no longer as active as it used to be). My son really enjoyed Sentence Island. He's sad that Mud isn't in Paragraph Town.
  17. My son taught himself to read. He absolutely refused to do any phonics with me. We switched to All About Spelling in the 2nd grade (after I heard about it here) and that's how he's gotten his phonics.
  18. The mucus can be a symptom of an allergy. If he's reacted to milk in the past, I'd suggest cutting dairy from his diet (definitely) and possibly from yours too. My son has a dairy allergy. He had trace amounts of blood in his stool too, along with the mucus. You may want to call the pediatrician and see what they suggest. But it doesn't sound like an emergency, so I'd wait until Monday.
  19. If he's with law enforcement, I'd think there would be chaplains associated with the unit who would be a useful resource. It may reduce any stigma with "counseling" and give him some help. (My father worked as a police chaplain for a time.)
  20. I have something for 3 in a word document. If you're interested, PM me your email address & I'll toss it to you & you can see if it's useful.
  21. The Singapore site was roughly the same as rainbow... Some items cheaper, so it averaged out roughly the same.
