  1. you could try to derive from http://allinonehighschool.com/early-american-history/ and http://allinonehighschool.com/modern-american-history/
  2. AP World History is also typically taken as a first AP. If your student is not a strong reader/writer then this could be difficult. This is the last year before the test redesign.
  3. Connecticut seems to offer very little http://www.ctvirtuallearning.com/ http://distancelearn.about.com/od/onlinepublicschools/a/CTPublic.htm you may need to "roll your own" with edX, etc Go to the Pinned High School subject threads example http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/468303-homeschool-high-school-biology/
  4. Wow a real syllabus with course details - most I see today are on the order of no cell phones in class and maybe the name of the textbook - this teacher gets an A+
  5. Anyone use this one? from the pinned HS Physics thread: http://aplusphysics.com/ap1/ Any inexpensive options? Would Philfour cover the material? Not looking for an approved AP course only one that is complete in coverage. We may try this as a second Science (along with Bio) via home study this year and then decide on taking the AP exam in the early spring. My son completed Conceptual Physics and Algebra 2 last year both with an A.
  6. FYI If you go here http://www.phschool.com/webcodes10/index.cfm?area=view&wcprefix=csk&wcsuffix=8888 and click through you eventually get to Chapters that link reference the Physics Classroom material.
  7. Can he still take the Intermediate Algebra this summer maybe online? Then start with Trig & Analytical Geometry ? He can take the AP Calc exam near the end of his DE class. This would give you a good idea if the class was equivalent. You could also just take an older one and self-score to save the $92.
  8. Hmm "Intermediate Algebra" at a CC is usually a water-downed Algebra 2 (especially compared to Common-core Algebra 2). Does he take College Algebra next? Any Trig? I only mention this because he is interested in Engineering and Math is very important.
  9. Summer school for credit recovery seems to be lax for our local district as well - similar course length- even with accelerated it seems light since a "redo"
  10. What are your DS' long term goals? He needs to fully understand the "heart" of the material before moving on. He does not have to solve every challenge problem correctly. see http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/555480-gentle-but-thorough-algebra-1/
  11. Do you mean grants/scholarships or just more loans? I don't consider loans as real "aid" unless the interest rate is very low.
  12. of interest from that doc: To be domiciled in a particular place, one must intend to remain there for an indefinite period of time (permanently), and it is the place where one intends to return if absent. A person may have many residences, but may only have one domicile. For purposes of this Manual, “domicile†is synonymous with "legal residence." Since Penguin is currently absent does this apply? I am not a lawyer but this is what I was getting at. Exiting stage left ... Good Luck
  13. I would follow up with NC. You are ex-pats and that is always a special residence situation. Do you still have a US domicile in NC? What do your tax returns use?
  14. How about some of these: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/542418-homeschool-high-school-math/?do=findComment&comment=6191111 Instead of DE Calculus 1 you could take an AP Calculus AB or equivalent class online. The Hive usually rates Derek Owens classes quite high.
  15. If you had not taken the SAT in HS they wouldn't have admitted you ??! - that's ridiculous - obviously this particular college over-weighs the SAT versus real coursework
  16. 3x^2-11x-4 first write down these because no other choice: (3x )(x ) then notice that the b term -11 is only one away from 3 * -4 so let's try that factor of the c term first: (3x+1) (x-4) FOIL to check: 3x^2 -12x +1x -4 Voila It's all about number sense that the students don't learn these days because they are overly dependent on calculators. I would never teach pure trial and error with all factors unless I was trying to write a brute force computer program. When a,b,c get big and messy then plug and chug the quadratic formula.
  17. For our local CC you only need to take the placement tests. If your student has no plans to directly attend a four year University for Freshman and Sophomore years then the SAT or ACT is not required. The transfer school will look at the CC grades.
  18. Since you are not looking at taking the AP test next year - I would recommend doing Python first and possibly along with some Haskell or F# for a functional approach. Then do Java during an AP class in the future. As a SW Engineer Java is just 'OK' to me.
  19. My DS who is a rising Sophomore took the PSAT last fall (he scored pretty high for a Freshman). I convinced him to create a College Board account so I could look at the problems he got wrong. Now he is complaining that his email account is being spammed by Colleges with recruitment letters. Is there anyway to opt out from this? thanks
  20. "The fight over Sweet Briar is a vivid example of how the U.S. college system is an unchecked, unaccountable mess. Colleges enjoy a gushing waterfall of government subsidies in the form of tax-exempt status, grants and student aid, while they steadily hit families with costly tuition and squander resources via haphazard decision-making, often done in secret."
  21. I believe the teacher edition of Algebra and Trigonometry: Functions and Applications by Paul Foerster came with a floppy or CD with the computer programs that are mentioned in the text book. If you have these (any edition) and are willing to share could you please PM me. I want to work with my son to convert some of them to Python (for his benefit). I will give you the converted programs back to you if you like. thank you
  22. good comment and so true: " Ann North Carolina My children just finished 1st, 5th, and 7th grade. I don't necessarily have a problem with the Common Core Standards themselves. They are standards of what topics need to be taught at each grade level. What curriculum is used and how schools implement those standards could definitely use improvement for sure, but having standards seems reasonable. My frustration is with the emphasis placed on testing. For the last 2 months of school, my fifth grader learned no new material. She literally did test prep only for two full months of the year. She was required to do 57 practice test sections as homework during that time and did practice tests every day in class. She was given additional test prep homework online and told to work on it on the weekends. The only reading she did during that time was those awful "reading comprehension passages" that only made her hate reading. There were no book reports, no book discussions, no discussion or education relating to reading beyond test taking strategies. This is not real life. I want my children to do state reports, book reports, create dioramas, use math manipulatives, do creative writing, read and discuss whole books, and learn about history. I honestly feel like my fifth grader finished elementary school as an expert test taker and nothing more. That's depressing. My now second grader doesn't start the major testing for another year, and I am currently looking for a different school for her for third grade on. Wish me luck. " That is biggest difference from back in my day. We just took the Stanford tests, etc - no prep.
