Strategies to succeed with Foersters Algebra 2??
MarkT replied to amymeg's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I would cover some Trig. You also may want to consider what the ALGEBRA 2 COMMON CORE topics are: https://mathbitsnotebook.com/Algebra2/Algebra2.html https://emathinstruction.com/common-core-algebra-ii/ example course description: " 531 Algebra 2 (Grade 10,11) This course follows the New York State Syllabus for Algebra 2/Trigonometry and includes topics in functions, probability, statistics, logarithms, and trigonometry. The Algebra 2 (Common Core) Regents Examination will be taken in June. " -

Larson has some college Algebra text books that have free "Chalkdust" videos.

Strategies to succeed with Foersters Algebra 2??
MarkT replied to amymeg's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Many syllabi out there do not cover the whole book as MWB does. examples; http://jtoy.wikidot.com/algebra-2-syllabus [snip] oops not same book look at Core Alg 2: http://www.kolbe.org/files/8014/5228/2359/FoersterAlgebraIIANDAlgebraIIandTrig.pdf table of contents http://www.slader.com/textbook/9780201861013-algebra-and-trigonometry-functions-and-applications-expanded-second-edition/ -
I don't disagree with your statement but I know the essay I would produce on a blue-book in an hour would be a piece of crap compared to one done over several days with re-writes. I guess at some point we have to trust the students somewhat. Not many students can afford to "hire" someone to write essays for them. Plain old plagiarized papers are pretty easy to detect with technology. Maybe some collaboration on math problems isn't that bad if in the end they all understand.

Do any colleges use a computer lab to do their essay based tests? [No way they would allow student laptops since cheating would be rampant.] Personally I believe almost all essays should be homework, typed on a computer and in depth. They could give mid-term/final paper exams that require only a paragraph answer for each question.

Foerster is a higher level text and MWB does assign some of the more challenging problems. A student does need to learn how to read a math text IMHO. If you decide to bail look here: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/topic/542418-homeschool-high-school-math/ I think Holt Algebra 2 2007 is complete and fairly easy to follow. Lots of problems. Free Thinkwell type videos.

Thinkwell Geometry - too easy?
MarkT replied to happy7's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
More topic coverage? better topic depth? better problem sets? ----------------------------- Considering the price difference, I would expect more from the Derek Owens course. -
Thinkwell Geometry - too easy?
MarkT replied to happy7's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I would use some outside resource(s) (such as subject tests) to show mastery. Some folks find Geometry easier than Algebra. ===================================== McDougal Littell's Geometry Test Practice: https://www.classzone.com/books/geometry/oltp_welcome.cfm you can find sample test problems here: http://www.jmap.org/JMAP_REGENTS_EXAMS.htm if you access to ExamView (perhaps a friend who is a teacher or some TE textbooks have this on CD) google "examview geometry test banks" there are other test bank tools as well -
so, tell me more about ALEKS
MarkT replied to ProudGrandma's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
If you could get textbook references you could use it to drive a primary program. Student reads the textbook section, solves a few textbook problems and then uses ALEKS to show mastery. DS and I used ALEKS in an ASU College Algebra course Personally I like pencil and paper versus web interfaces for math but your student may like it. https://www.aleks.com/about_aleks -
High school math and use of calculators
MarkT replied to Peaceseeker's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
DS used that text at his charter. It was totally unnecessary to purchase a graphing calculator to use with it. There were a few problems where it was handy - I found this easy one: https://my.hrw.com/math06_07/nsmedia/tools/Graph_Calculator/graphCalc.html The teacher liked it and shared it with the class. She did not have to spend time training the class to use a real graphing calculator. -
High school math and use of calculators
MarkT replied to Peaceseeker's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Another good choice is TI 36X Pro for a scientific calculator: https://education.ti.com/en/products/calculators/scientific-calculators/ti-36x-pro DS went/goes to Public Charter schools - they pushed purchasing a graphing calculator for Algebra 1 but it was totally unnecessary. In Algebra 2 and Geometry it is handy to have a scientific calculator available. A graphing calculator becomes useful in Precalc but is pretty much a necessity for AP Calc AB (other Calc I courses may rely less on graphing calculators). DS has a TI 84 CE now. -
How do you know whether to take AP Calc AB or BC?
MarkT replied to mirabillis's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
my DS (strong in Math but does not like extra fast paced learning): Calculus AB this year Calculus BC next year -
S/o- Starting at CC (or local U) to save on costs
MarkT replied to Hilltopmom's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I think this is key for STEM. OR some states have master transfer course lists for CC to state Us. Some CC even have transfer agreements with private colleges. A colleague at work did this for his BSEE (Pima CC then Arizona) and saved a bunch of money. -

DE for student headed into engineering?
MarkT replied to teachermom2834's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
You may/should send in an explanation such as "Calc 2 not as rigorous as expected" or "didn't cover full syllabus" - yeah some sandbagging OR many U give a placement test to all students -

DE for student headed into engineering?
MarkT replied to teachermom2834's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
ERAU == Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University ? My DS' school has basic DE Eng classes with them - we opted not be DE with them (fairly high cost) - the classes were too easy in my book anyway So why aren't they looking at your student's Calc?? I would contact them.
