  1. If you are able to chip away at the debt for a while, your options for paying the rest of it down may get better as your credit scores improve and your business incomes begin to look more reliable to lenders. It sounds like your house is one of the best things you have going for you in your current financial situation, so I wouldn't want to sell it now. Moving into the basement apartment when your kids head off to college and renting out the main floor of the house could be a possibility for helping out with their tuition costs.
  2. My guess would be trichomes (plant hairs). I don't think it could've been a bacterium based on the size of the blue thread. Even under 1000x magnification, most bacteria still look pretty small.
  3. I have 6 - 1 black and 1 beige that fit perfectly and are relatively new, 3 older ones that don't fit as well, and 1 sports bra. I finally broke down and bought the 2 newer ones this year, even though I felt a little silly spending $65 on nursing bras when my last baby was almost two years old. I really do like having ones that fit well and are supportive though.
  4. If he seems otherwise okay, I would just make a note to discuss it at the next checkup. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk
  5. I lost 5 or 6 lbs, but most of it came back so quickly that it must've been dehydration. Maybe you're better at staying hydrated while sick? Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk

  7. Agreeing that you need something more recent. A textbook from 1992 is probably teaching 5 kingdoms of life (animals, plants, fungi, protists, and monera) rather than 3 domains (archaea, bacteria, and eukaryotes).
  8. My twins are 2.5 years younger than their big sister and 2.5 years older than their younger brother. I combine them with their big sister for literature, history, geography, science, and art appreciation. They do writing and grammar together. I have at times combined them for phonics, math, and spelling and at times done these subjects separately for them. The twins do not do any subjects together with their younger brother. However I have one more son who is 1.5 years younger (so 4 years younger than the twins). I plan to combine him with the middle brother a lot because they are at similar levels in all but reading. 9. I have driven our 10-passenger van in San Francisco, and I never really feel comfortable about it, but it is okay. I drive carefully and so far we haven't had any problems. Parking can be tough though. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk

  11. Just for fun - if you had a million dollars If I had a million dollars, I'd buy you a green dress, but not a real green dress, that's cruel.
  12. They target each other, sure, but it's all too easy to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when that happens. There have been several shootings on the freeway near my house in the past couple years. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk
  13. Way to go! Thank you for sharing your pictures. I don't have a great idea of what is normal messy and clean for other people, and it was really helpful to see.
  14. I have heard that the leases can really complicate things if you want to sell your house. Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk
  15. We got solar panels a little over a year ago, and no regrets. We spent $12.5k on the panels and our electric costs went from $1015 per year to $82 per year. So our payoff time should be about 13 years if the price of electricity doesn't change. Our installation is a bit undersized because our roof layout isn't great for solar. The other energy-saving things we've done are HE washer, LED light bulbs, line-drying clothing most of the time, and putting our fridge on a smart plug. We get alerts through a program called Ohm Connect (I think it's just for California) that lets us know when peak power times are and pays us for using less electricity at those times. EDIT: I forgot to take into account the tax credits - that brought the cost down by $3645, making the payback time more like 9 years.
  16. Try the National Novel Writing Month young writers program. The first part is a workbook to plan out the setting, characters, and plot, which sounds like the sort of thing your son might enjoy, and there is a lot of support for writing the "novel" (more like a short story at this age.) 17. That sounds great, and lots of kids really do take off reading from there with little extra help. When my daughter was stuck around that level, I used level 4 of All About Reading with her, which was really helpful for learning to spot prefixes and suffixes to break down longer words.
  18. What have you tried so far? (Or what sort of approach did his school use?) How is his reading now? If he has previously been taught with a sight words or "balanced literacy" approach and is doing okay with easy readers, then your thoughts of what to try sound right on to me. You could also take a look at Ordinary Parents' Guide to Teaching Reading. If he has been taught with a primarily phonics approach and is really struggling, then he might need Barton. 19. Measure your furniture and the rooms of your new home. Draw everything on graph paper. Play with it until you like the layout. There is probably a way to do this on the computer, but graph paper worked well enough for me. It's a little tedious, but it's great to know what furniture to let go of before your move and to know exactly where all of it should go in the new house on moving day.
  20. Touch Type Read and Spell is super easy to implement and teaches typing and spelling together (no writing on paper). I wouldn't worry about backsliding in spelling with kids that age because they are probably picking up on the spelling of words from reading. (Not all kids do, but my kids who caught onto reading quickly without a lot of phonics instruction have also tended to pick up spelling easily.)

  22. Both of my now 8-year-olds caught on to reading towards the end of first grade and started reading for pleasure a fair bit. I would have them read a few pages of whatever they were interested in aloud to me every so often, and it became clear after a few months that my daughter was guessing on the longer words and often getting them wrong. I did All About Reading Level 4 with her (she hadn't used any of the previous levels), and it was very helpful for breaking down longer words into syllables and helping her spot common prefixes and suffixes. Her twin brother didn't really need to do the extra phonics, although the sections on foreign words were helpful. I think you'll know - if his reading level keeps improving, great! If it kind of stalls out at the 5th grade level for a year or so, go ahead and use the last level of a phonics program. (The last bit of OPGTR also focuses on unusual letter combinations and breaking down long words.)
  23. Non-sweet breakfast: bagels with hummus. Vegan mini-omelettes - I like these as sandwiches on English muffins, if you can find a brand that works for you (Thomas's is not vegan) Shoes: some New Balance shoes are suitable for vegans.
  24. If he hasn't learned to type well yet, I'd add that in.
