Exhausting back talk
coralloyd replied to Lovedtodeath's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My dd7 just started arguing a lot. When I told dh about my struggle with her, He said " That needs to be nipped in the bud. I'll take her to lunch tomorrow and talk to her." Well this helped tremendously. I don't know what he said, but it worked. I guess Daddy's words sometimes carry a little more weight, than Mommy's. -
What does your screen name mean?
coralloyd replied to RegGuheert's topic in General Education Discussion Board
It's my name- first and last. Maybe putting my last name isn't a good idea :tongue_smilie:. -
How often do you sweep/mop/vacuum?
coralloyd replied to phathui5's topic in General Education Discussion Board
once a week I vacuum and mop (I vacuum, no sweeping). Except under the table- I vacuum almost every day with an easy little battery powered vac. -
For dd5- We use Explode the Code- just easy phonics work books that progess as you go (letter sounds, then cvc short vowel words, ect..). Along With ETC we do Phonics Pathways -taking only a few minutes a day. I also let her choose any book she wants to read from our shelves, each day. It is a very easy and laid back aproach. I tried the harder ways with dd7(went through many phonics programs :blushing:), and she struggles with fluency. Dd5 is very fluent, hardly any hesitation, she has almost caught up to her sister's level. I think it is mainly because, I stopped trying so hard.

anyone else having unusually cold weather lately?
coralloyd replied to hsmom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Same here in the Arizona mountains, and yes Az has mountains where it gets cold. -
Be grateful you know where they stand. I just found out from one of ladies in the Mom Time group I teach that; "Everyone thinks you're nuts for hsing." (speaking of the ladies in the group). Well, they don't seem to think I'm too crazy/nuts to teach them the Bible, and come to (constantly) for advice about their lives ;). I guess these things just come with the territory (sigh).

With my girls, they have their normal chores that they have to do because they are part of this family: Trash Make bed Clean playroom Feed dog Put laundry away Clean their room However, I pay for any chores that they do above and beyond these. If they want to earn money, they ask what they can do. I look around to see what needs to be done and assign them something. Just the other day I needed the baseboards wiped, so dd5 did them and I payed her a quarter ;).

Drink water upside down. Bend over and drink from the opposite side of the cup. Your chin will be almost in the cup. Really works!

I am a wrestler's daughter. My dad wrestled in high school and college. So I grew up wrestling with him. When I was in Junior High, I started wrestling with boys at youth functions on the trampoline. I was GOOD, and beat all of them. However, my dad had to tell me to stop, he saw that the boys were enjoying it a little too much ;). I also started to feel uncomfortable. When you wrestle hands end up in places that they just shouldn't, when talking about a young girl and boy. I am so grateful that my dad, knowing the dangers stepped in.

We school year around so this is what my 7 year old is doing right now- Reading: She chooses any book she would like to read (she's working through the Magic Tree House series right now) and reads on her bed for a half hour before school every morning. Bible: I Read -aloud the International Children's Bible Math: MUS Alpha Writing: Every other Monday I draw a shape in her note book. She then draws a picture using the shape as a starting point (this helps her imagination to get going). On the next page she writes a story about her picture. I don't require Grammar and Spelling to be correct in this. I just want her to get her thoughts on paper. Spelling: Even though I don't require good spelling in her creative writing story, I do take her spelling list from the words she misspells in it. For that week and the next she writes these words, writes sentences for them, and looks them up in the Dictionary. It is great to see her improved spelling in her stories. Grammar: R&S English 2 (not on Creative Writing day) Copy work: Whatever I feel like have her do, usually a verse or poems. History: While we take a break from SL (so that the girls can do Core 1 together). I have 30 of the Value Tales books. We are learning about 1 person a week. This week is -Ludwig van Beethoven. Science: CL Nature Readers Memorization: Awana Art: once a week- Come Look With Me, draw (Edit) Lots of Read-Alouds from the library (at night, before bed).

Math-u-see! Math-u-see! we love it.
-
Reasons: 1. I was homeschooled and loved it. 2. My girls are best friends and I didn't want to seperate them for so many hours. Hsing cultivates their relationship. 3. They are advanced, and I didn't want them to go through what my dh went through in school. He got bored, and then got into a lot of trouble. 4. I also went to public and private school ;). 5. I hate most text books and tests. 6. I would miss so much of their lives. I love being with my children! 7. I want to be the main influence in their live, not their peers. 8. I want them to love learning. 9. Dh wants me to. 10. I'm not a morning person, neither are my children. 11. My dh works at home and we have an RV, so the flexibility of hsing works best for us. These are just a few of my reasons :).

cross post: Steve Demme defends MUS!
coralloyd replied to 4wildberrys's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
When we went to the conference last year I had my dh go listen to the MUS presentation. My dh is VERY math minded, as a coder. When we got out of the session he said "This is what we are using." Usually he lets me make all the choices, but with this he was very emphatic. For my dh EVERYthing has to make sense. He absoltuely loves the logical way MUS teaches. I also love it because I am learning things I know, just in a better way. I am really looking forward to the higher levels so I can learn certain things for the first time :). -

I think TOG will be way too much for a 2nd grader from what I've heard and seen. -
Go for #1, very cute.

I went to some private and public school, but most of my education was homeschooled (starting in Kindergarten). I LOVED it! One of the times that I went to school, was when I was going to be a freshmen. My mom was overwhelmed and decided to put me in public school. I ended up going to a school that was not my district. I wanted to be at the school most of my friends attended. Well, after 1 year of ps I was completely bored, and asked to come home again. Even my friends were more boring in school than outside of school. My friends talked about the same things day in and day out, I got so sick of all the drama. Don't get me wrong I loved my friends, they were just drones during school hours :tongue_smilie:. So I begged to come home, and my mom let me (l love her):001_wub:. My mom was very alone, since the only people who hsed back then were strange odd balls. I really admire my mom's courage and strength to go against the croud for my benifit.

Can doing a good job homeschooling backfire?
coralloyd replied to WTMCassandra's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Yep, I was having a coversation with a couple of ladies the other day. One of them came right out and said she could very easily hs, but she just doesn't want to. This was the first time I actually had someone admit this, usually I get the "I don't think I could do it." thing.
