  1. I would agree to consider buying. Even though I don't scrapbook, I plan on taking all the slides, pictures, etc. and converting them to digital and burning CD/DVD's. If you have a lot, having someone else do it will get very pricey quickly. I think Canon makes one that is supposed to be good. Not sure about the cost.
  2. I was a bagger at major chain. No such thing as plastic, only paper. We were instructed in how to bag groceries. One layer of cans, then boxes/lighter stuff. All frozen things go in the same bag. All cold things went in the same bag. Meat was separate. Cleaning products were never put in with food. Weight was important. The manager often was bagging right along side of us. We were not allowed to let things back up on the belt that would slow down the checker. We were told to look at the contents of the cart and then begin to mentally start bagging. Had to make sure it stood up all on it's own and wouldn't fall over too. If he thought you put too much in a bag, then we had to rebag it. I rarely get plastic bags for the reason you mention and my past experience. I even put things on the belt in order. Cold/frozen first, then cans and boxes, bread and chips (smashable stuff) goes at the end. My take is most have never been instructed on how to bag. To the other extreme, I have had bags with over 25 lbs. in them because it was stuff that all fit. I just grin and bear it. Sometimes, I'll repack my bags when I get to the car.
  3. You wouldn't be a mom if you stopped missing them. I think it is part of the job description. :D I still miss mine, he is in the 2nd year of a 6 year program. He calls me at least once a week, more often if he has time. I haven't seen him since mid-January but I will pick him up next weekend for break. I am having lunch with his girlfriend this week. She is on break and was just visiting him last weekend. His little brother misses him terribly. I think your feelings are pretty normal. :)
  4. I agree with Staci. The TI-89 for Calc. I think that one is allowed on the SAT, just not the ACT.
  5. Yes. Even the publisher calls it honors on their website. I listed it as Honors on ds's transcript and I did include course descriptions the text used. He did all chapters except 11&12. It was never questioned and I figured that if the colleges wanted to know about calling it honors, they could look it up online. I used an honors syllabus that I found online. This was the only class that I called honors.
  6. Have her go through the books -- What Smart Students Know 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Both helped my ds with time management. Also, get her using a planner (like Franklin Covey or Daytimer) now so when she gets there, she will know how to use them. They have to learn how to stand on their own two feet, even if it is painful as a mom to watch.
  7. You are panicing with that score???? I wouldn't worry about her one bit.
  8. have been doing their own laundry since they were in 7th grade. The oldest even had to tell girls in the dorm how to do laundry last year. They had no clue and he made some friends that day. :D My mother stopped doing my laundry when I was a freshman in high school. She just closed the door to my room (I was a slob) so she didn't have to look at the mess or try to figure out what was clean and what was dirty.
  9. As for the writing -- In the anti-thread, I mentioned ds never wrote more than a 3 page paper for me. He had a writing phobia too and I tried a lot of things to get him to write more. He now churns out 15-20 page research papers in college (and gets A's and B's) so something I did must have stuck way back in his brain. Has she done any testing like ACT/SAT or others (I don't know what your state requirements are)? Don't panic.
  10. My aunt and uncle had a deal with all 5 of their kids. They would not pay for the first 2 years of college, even though they had plenty of money to be able to pay every dime. If the kids wanted to go, they had to fund those 2 years themselves, either with loans, scholarships, jobs, etc. They believed that if the kids paid for it themselves, it would motivate them to do well. If they did, then my aunt and uncle would pay for the last 2 years at ANY college they wanted to go. All of but the oldest one went away to college (one even went to a very expensive private LAC) straight from high school, paying their own way and my aunt and uncle kept their part of the bargain. The oldest graduated from the local CC but never transfered to a 4 year school. A variation of this might work for you or others here.
  11. And a few more reasons to not belong here -- ** He wasn't hsed all the way through. Pulled him out at the end of 6th grade. I read TWTM and remember my ps education (way back in the 50'-60's) was similar but he was not getting any of that at his school. So, I loosely incorporated TWTM for 6 years. He didn't like some of it but now, in college, he thanks me weekly. ** Never did Latin or Greek. Never even considered it. ** We didn't follow the 4-yr. cycle. We did 2 yrs. of World History, one year of AP US History, then one year of 20th Century World History. ** He never wrote a paper longer than 3 pages. Give this old brain time and I can probably think of a few more.
  12. I decided after Alg. II (used Foerster's) that he would take math at the local high school. He was in 11th for that and then took AP Calc. in 12th at the school. He did not want to take a class at the local cc.
  13. I don't belong here because the one I homeschooled graduated 2 years ago.
  14. Ds gave the 7th grade social studies teacher (and a great teacher) the SOTW books to read. He sent us the nicest email that stated ds earned the social studies award (awarded in May) the first week of school in August. LOL!!! After SOTW, he gave him some of the Marbury books to read and the teacher just sucked them up too.
  15. At least around here. My youngest is in ps (9th) and he can't believe how many of the kids do not remember any of the history that they have been taught. There were huge gaps in what they were taught too. They haven't been taught anything from about MLK to the present (unless it is current events). He says in his social studies class, he is about the only one who answers any questions. Most of rest of them don't have a clue. If the teacher asks what they term a hard question, they just look at ds for the answer. My oldest (in college) loved the 20th Century course I had him do as a senior. He said the learned so much in that and it other historical things in context. Plus, he had parents that lived though half of it (LOL!!!) and could explain it in comparason to today. (:) *anj*). Kathy in MD, they sure aren't being taught anything more in any of the other classes. They aren't starting foreign language until 7th grade and even then it is optional all the way through high school. They are doing Our Town right now and did Romeo and Juliet first semester. I doubt if they will add any more. This is the child that started me looking at hsing but I ended up pulling the older one out instead. I would love to hs this one but he wants no part of it. I afterschool him adding many of the relative items to what they are doing in class.
  16. I got a 32.5 but I that included 20 mom bonus points. :D Even said "hi mom". Once i read the answers, I knew some of the songs but I was a teen in the 60's-early 70's.
  17. I had them, not as a child, but when I was 42. Got them off when I was 45. :)
  18. Most APUSH takers are either 11th or 12th graders. I waited until ds was in 11th to do APUSH. Some schools offer AP world in 9th. I do think the essay portions of the tests are the part where younger students have trouble. Same applies for AP Biology. Go to APCentral at the collegeboard website and look at past exams. Register as a teacher and you can get loads of information. Hope this helps.
  19. My dh uses it to catalog our extensive LP and CD collection which totals over 1000 titles. Also, our support group uses it to catalog the resource library.
  20. See if your library can get it on Interlibrary Loan. I looked at several history texts using that method to help me decide which one I wanted. Saved me a bunch of money because I knew what I needed to look for when getting ready to buy.
  21. I did Weight Watchers and lost 35 lbs in 8 months just by using portion control. I was not about to give up food I liked because I know that I would gain it all back again once I lost. I still ate chips - anything salty is my downfall, I am not a sweets eater - used butter on my toast, drank regular pepsi (cut down a lot), ate just about everything but less of it. Instead of a whole sandwich for lunch, I only ate 1/2. After finishing my portion at supper, I picked up my plate and took it to the sink. Sometimes I would have a challenging week but kept going back to the basic premise of eating less. Good luck.......
  22. We had them do a diploma, announcements, personalized thank you notes, and return address stickers. Very fast, beautiful, and professional. Many choices to customize to your liking. Ds sat with me and made all the choices - colors, font, wording, graphics, etc. I found out later that they were much cheaper than what the ps kids had to order to get the pieces they wanted. I recommend them to all my hs friends.
