  1. The Goff text is what we used when ds was in 12th grade. He enjoyed it. I found some questions online from a college teacher that I had him do after each chapter.
  2. We started Megawords in 7th grade with a terrible speller. You can get through them fairly quickly at that age. They are for 4th grade - adult so it wouldn't seem like a high schooler would be doing a program aimed at elementary, just starting to read kids.
  3. So to get 5 stars all the ratings have to be 5 stars? What if one person rates it 1 star then another 4 stars? Do they get averaged? I read threads based on the title, not the number of stars.
  4. We are surrounded by 100+ ft. oaks, maples, ashes, hickory, etc. We did have to clear enough to build our house. One was a 172 yo white oak. Broke my heart to do it but there was no way to keep it. Next door, they have an oak that is at least 300 yo. There many within 1000 feet of our house that are that old too. We only get about 2 hours of sunlight in one area of our backyard. That is the only area that we can consistently get grass to grow. Our front yard gets more sun but the trees keep growing and the grass is starting to thin. Saves on a/c bills in the summer. I so want a garden. I want a dish too but the trees block the line. But I won't cut down trees that are 100 or more years old unless they are threatening the house. They can't easily be replaced. Well - all of them are a threat if the wind decides to blow hard enough or a tornado comes through here. We do trim branches occassionally. JMHO.
  5. Now, this is just MNSHO --- I hate it and my kids hated it. Years ago, I talked to ds2's 2nd grade teacher for quite a while about it and also a friend who is a 1st grade teacher that uses it. Both said that unless the teacher is really good and spends the time learning the program, it is not good for the kids. Ds2's 6th grade teacher even said the first time she was in the classroom, she had to learn math as the kids were learning it since she couldn't do anymore than add, subtract, multiply and divide. Many of the teachers have trouble teaching math because they don't understand it and can't help kids who struggle. (I think EM introduces things like powers in about 3rd grade). With the first child, who still couldn't do math facts at the end of 6th grade is when I started homeschooling him. With ds2, I actually ended up blowing off what he did in math and didn't care what "grade" he got. I started doing stuff at home and then telling him which way he HAD to do the problem (not whatever of 3 choices they teach). Once I did that, he got it the first time. I started with workbooks that taught the basics that did the drill and more drill. The Keys to books are great for that kind of thing too and also have good explainations. To me and my kids, EM got worse as they progressed through the grades. So, what I am saying is get to the bookstore and look at workbooks and teach the basics at home and get them down pat. Counting, number sense, change, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, etc. When other topics come up in EM, don't worry about them or if your child does not get it. And, again, all of this is just my opinion, YMMV, and I hope something here helps someone.
  6. Margaret in CO can give you all sorts of info about what is needed to get into any of the service academies.
  7. The local high school uses Lial's Alg. 1 for the remedial classes. They take 2 years to go through it.
  8. :iagree: We have the ability to pay extra each month. Dh usually just chooses the amount based on other bills - sometimes it is $100 sometimes it is $600. He does do it every month, just the amount varies. Our mortgage holder is a local small bank that does not resell them. Great to work with. We don't pay it off and we don't pay off the HELOC otherwise our taxes would go way up - it would cause us to get hit with the alternative minimum tax. We need the deduction.
  9. Mine graduated 2 years ago and I am still here. Granted I am afterschooling the younger but not true hsing. Stay and play.
  10. A few years ago, someone on one of the hsing boards let me borrow a book that was very difficult to obtain. I had never met her, she lived in a different state. She mailed me the book and I was so excited to be able to use it. I sent her a gift card as a thank you when I returned it to her. Fast forward to this year and I paid it forward to someone on this board. She did send me a B&N gift card but I was not expecting anything. It was a wonderful nice thank you. I look for opportunites to pay it forward, it not only helps the person, but I always feel good about supporting someone who chooses to hs.
  11. Ask her if the hs does disections of ALL of the following since that is what is in Apologia and you are considering using that text series. Earthworm, Crayfish, Perch, and Frog. I doubt it - the local hs only does a rat. Then ask her what they disect in Adv. Bio. Do they do a fetal pig? That is what you would do in Apologia. She still may never "get it".
  12. I donated 14" a few years ago to LoL. The salon gave me a gift and took care of sending it in with all the info. A month of so later, I got a thank you postcard in the mail.
  13. I was getting calls from people looking for my neighbor. They must have looked on reverse lookup to see who lived close. He eventually moved and shortly after that, filed for bankruptcy. He had a successful business and I don't know what happened to the tons of money he had.
  14. Isn't it on the app. what the rules are? I thought they were whichever way it is.
  15. I pre-ordered at the local TRU and went when they opened this morning. There was a line and they had only 15 for the general public, but there was a stack of about 50 that had been pre-ordered. The general ones were gone in less than 10 minutes. They did have Wii systems too. My ds was ROTFL his you know what off while I got nailed with shoes and teddy bears in the soccer game. I just went through all the open activities and got a few more unlocked. With DDR, WiiFit, and WiiSports, I can do a great varied workouts depending on my mood. They also had a deal on Wii Ski for $19.99 if you bought WiiFit. I picked it up too but you can play that one with wiimotes and nunchuks or a balance board.
  16. Pack a picnic lunch for each person. Sandwiches, fruit, veggies, chips, whatever. Buy water after you go through security. In a couple airports I have been in, there are fast food restaurants very close to the gate and many people board with hot Pizza Hut pizza, Burger King, Mickeyd's, or Subway sandwiches.
  17. My maternal grandfather (died in 1962) to hear him tell about immigrating from Sicily. My maternal grandmother (died in 1975) to learn how to make homemade pasta. My father (died in 1990) so he can see the grandchild who shares his middle name and see what both dc have done so far. My mother (died in 2004) so she can see her dgc. She was the total doting, spoiling grandmother and my kids miss her terribly.
  18. It is doable and she will not be scarred for life. :D Spend some time with her finding out what future goals she has. Involve her in picking curriculum. Go to a conference and bring her along. If she wants to hs, she should be more willing to take ownership of the outcome. Map out a general 4 year plan, then take it one year at a time. Not all of it has to be done by you either. You can do online classes, coops (if in your area), and cc. Breathe, you can do it.
  19. If I remember correctly, a lot of AP tests are like that. If you look at the stats, there are about 50% who get a 3 or above and 50% who do not. I have always wondered if they create a bell curve.
  20. I started school when I was 4 so I was one of the young ones. The cutoff date back then was Dec. 1. Academically I was ready but I might have done better if I had waited. I went to one of the best school systems in the state. I was a slacker, I did just enough to get by, paying more attention to the social aspect than the academics. I took the strong college prep track of classes. They taught along the traditional, classical lines, and Latin was offered in high school (I didn't take it). We were taught to read using phonics, knew geography of the world in grade school, did timed math drills constantly, we diagrammed sentences in jr. high, Dolciani were the books used in math, my US history class used what is now a standard AP text, we had a computer in our high school (this was in the late 60's-early 70's when they took up whole rooms) and computer classes. Teachers were tough and had high expectations, the grading scale was 93+ was an A, 88-92=B, and anything under 75=F. I do think that going to a large univiersity was not a good fit for me. I went because of the cost. Hindsight is 20-20 and if I could do it over, I would have worked harder in K-12 and then gone to a small LAC. My education has influenced my hsing and afterschooling. I thought all schools taught what and how I was taught - HA HA!!!
  21. I don't use soap on my face. Whatever shampoo suds that run down my face in the shower is how I wash. On the occasions where I do wear makeup, I use the bar soap from Mary Kay. I have never had any problems with acne.
