  1. In one of my first semester freshman classes of about 25, only 2 people passed, one with an A who had previously taken a similar class at cc, and one with a C. The rest of us failed (I didn't even know you could drop a class otherwise I would have). It took years before the university fired the prof. after many more students suffered under him.
  2. We did USPUSH, Psychology, and Human Geography at home and ds took those exams. He took AP Calc (took test) and AP Chem (no test) at the local high school.
  3. using Foerster's Alg. & Trig. The publisher says it right on the website it is an honors level book so I listed it that way. Ds took a couple honors classes at the local high school and they were weighted grades and gave him the extra point too. Several of the college apps had spaces for weighted and unweighted GPA, I provided both and also on the transcript.
  4. No, no calculator use until 1/2 way through Alg. II. We used Jacob's Alg. and Foerster's Alg. II. He learned how to use one before the ACT which he took after he finished Alg. II. Then we bought at TI-83 plus. Yes, I am a mean mom but he appreciated it when it came to confidence on the part of the AP Calc exam where you cannot use a calculator.
  5. If you plan on taking 3 years, then I would go for Spielvogel/Duiker World History (not the essential version), a college level text as a spine. Western Civ. is an AP European History text which will not give you any other parts of world history. It also has a companion site where the student types in answers and then emails them to you. I found sites that have that feature incredibly helpful to use as tests or to check reading and understanding. http://academic.cengage.com/cengage/instructor.do?product_isbn=9780495050124&codeid=5F8A&disciplinenumber=21&courseid=HI02&sortby=copy&type=all_radio&codeFlag=true&maintab=About_the_Book&subtab=Overview At least that is JMHO.
  6. It might be a day or so, I just picked him up from school with a fever, stuffy nose, cough and sore throat. If I have to go tomorrow and get assignments, I'll make sure to pick it up too.
  7. I used HO for my oldest. The younger one is in ps and they use the Glencoe version. The Glencoe version is newer but with the NG tie in, I seems they took out text and put in pictures. But, I am not sure if it is any better because of it. When I glanced at it, it also seems like they took out a lot of the chapter review questions (we used those for review or tests in HO). The younger one prefers HO and reads that one when he has assignments from school. He has found things in HO that were not in the Glencoe version. I can ask him to bring it home and then I can compare them side by side to give you more detailed information.
  8. My ds liked gift cards from places like Target or Bed,Bath&Beyond or Best Buy. He used them for items he needed for college and his dorm room (bedding, towels, printer). He didn't care about the amount and didn't compare how much came from who. He just applied them towards the purchase and used any money he received to make up the balance.
  9. I did since at that time the colleges didn't have specifics of what they wanted from homeschoolers. Most have updated their websites and a couple do say they want course descriptions. I have no idea if it helped or not or if they were even read.
  10. This is what I have also. I also put the important stuff (appts., trips, meetings, etc.) on the bigger calendar in the kitchen for everyone to see. I stopped using it for a while and felt totally lost. Once I started using it again, I feel more organized and get more done. At my age, I start forgetting little things.
  11. My younger has had them for a couple years and complains about his knees the most. He has grown over a foot in that time. They are pretty normal according to the ped. especially when growing that fast.
  12. My MIL has one with the french doors. I wasn't impressed. If I remember correctly, to open the drawers in the frig, you had to open both doors. I always had a bottom frig model growing up, in our first house, and the first frig in this one. I loved them. The only reason I don't have one now is I splurged on a side by side subzero 7 years ago. Totally built in with panels to match the cabinets. Actually, I wanted it when we built the house but dh said no. He loves it now.
  13. We did AP US history when ds was in 11th. We used American Pageant, which is a pretty widely used AP text. We also incorporated AP US Government (no test) and American Literature since they are all closely tied together and you need to know information about govt and lit for the test. There are tons and tons of resources for APUSH online. Teachers have websites with reviews and quizzes and the publisher has a website with quizzes. For the essay, I used old DBQs and FRQs from past tests that are available at APCentral. They have the scoring rubrics so you can grade your own essays. You just need to make a plan working backwards from the test date. You can't get behind and it is pretty intense covering a lot of material. It takes time to plan and pull together the resources but it can be done. We were going to do AP Euro but went 20th century for 12th instead. Hope this helps.
  14. This is the book I used for ds for Twentieth Century World History when he was a senior. He really liked it and learned a lot. I found some study questions online and used those for tests. http://www.amazon.com/Twentieth-Century-Brief-Global-History/dp/0072348534 Hope this helps.
  15. :iagree: (and I am old enough to have used a slide rule)
  16. My ds had the no textbook math scenario in 6th grade. It was awful and part of the reason we started hsing. He is NOT an auditory learner and there was nothing for him (or us) to go back to when he had homework. The teachers would send worksheets home and often times, there were mistakes on them so the child could never get the correct answer. They were so totally confused. I finally sent a really nasty note to the teacher who then sent a note home to all students apologizing. I felt sorry for those kids who did not have parents that could help them.
  17. We started hsing in the middle - 7th grade. Ds didn't know his math facts and was counting on his fingers. He is now finishing his sophomore year in college. 7th - Saxon Alg. 1/2 8th - Jacob's Algebra 9th - Jacob's Geometry 10th - Foerster's Alg. II/Trig (all but 2 chapters) 11th - Pre-Calc at the local high school 12th - AP Calc at the local high school College - One semester of calculus is required but his 4 on the AP exam met the requirement. Hope this helps.
  18. There are several college students that attend the meeting I go to. They all want to not only lose weight but to learn about the healthy eating/lifestyle that will benefit them for years.
  19. While not ESL, this is what happened with my oldest when whole language was taught. Lots of kids who are his age and "graduates" were shortchanged - the Johnny can't read stuff. Educational policy likes to experiment with kids in all subjects, ESL, math, language arts.
  20. Considering I started kindergarden in 1958, that really is how it was.
  21. My trigger is chocolate. I went on a baking binge for my cholohalic dh years ago and had 2 in the same week. My mother told me chocolate also triggered migranes in my father. After I learned that, I rarely eat chocolate and haven't had one since.
