  1. I went to MOH last year, and it just didn't click with us after using SOTW for so many years. I have since found History Odyssey. That is what we will be using in the fall. My older two children are using it now. Jennie
  2. I think most children do not even realize that there is a distinction in the meaning of the two words. I do correct my children when I notice it. Jennie

She rides another day. My son has hockey twice a week and sometimes mows other people's lawns in the summer. The 9 yo twins have chores too, but you just asked about the older ones. Jennie
  4. Ah, thank you, Heather. I did not realize any of that. I just became aware of the program over the last two months since I have been a hive member. I knew they were only 10 lessons. I guess my question is what would be in the next 10 lessons of the level 2 Chemistry. Thanks again. Jennie
  5. I am not very flexible at all. I don't like to be forced into morning appointments or other such things. I do not answer the phone typically while we are doing school. We, generally, do not have interruptions, but they do occur every now and again. Jennie
  6. Raising my hand for my son! He disliked General Science. We only finished half the book. He didn't feel the chapters were broken down into logical increments. He felt there was a lot one day, and then not a lot on another day. He didn't care for the general layout of the book. This year we are using BJU Physical Science, and he really likes that. We are using it on our own without the DVD's. I am thinking about doing BJU's biology next year with the DVD's, but the cost is quite a bit for something I have to lease. I am not sure what we will do. Jennie
  7. Hmmm, I saw this post and suddenly remembered that I will have an 8th grader next year. She will be doing. History Odyssey 2 Middle Ages CLE Math CLE Language Arts CLE Reading combined with Lightning Lit 8 Writing???? Real Science 4 Kids Chemistry 1 & 2 plus finishing Zoology 3 if need be That is the plan so far. Jennie
  8. Could you explain what you mean by "supplement them significantly"? What do you feel it is missing for a pre-high school science course? I was planning to use both books with my dd next year in 8th grade. She has a strong dislike of chemistry. I am not sure why. We touched on it briefly when she was in 3rd grade. She has such a passion for life science, and she will have completed all of Jeannie Fulbright's zoology books. She is anticipating a possible major of equine science after high school. Thank you. Jennie
  9. My understanding is that Ben Franklin was a deists along with several other Founding Fathers. Jennie
  10. My youngest girls use the Rainbow Rock CD, and they have never used Singapore math past Earlybird. They like parts of it. Funny, my kids did not like the other CDs as much. Jennie
  11. No CLE is not the same as Saxon. While it is spiral, the review in CLE is not overwhelming or tedious. As for the why's I think it does do this, but not to the extent that Miquon or something like that does. Programs that are too heavily why oriented tend to frustrate my children who just want to know how to do the math. We really need a program that is spiral and in a workbook form, so CLE fits it for us. Jennie
  12. We have done different things with different children. My oldest used Apologia GS, and only completed about half of the book. He really disliked the textbook. My dd is a 7th grader this year, and she is working through the Elementary Apologia Zoology 2 and 3. Next year she will most likely do Real Science 4 Kids Chemistry 1 and 2. Hopefully that will be enough to get her ready for Bio in 9th grade. Jennie
  13. I feel your pain. This year has been especially challenging with my son now entering high school. We have changed history, science and Bible. The content areas (ancient history, physical science, New Testament survey) are the same, but the texts are different. I am hoping that this will not happen next year. I guess this is just our transition year. Jennie
  14. Yes, there are aspect of the AG that work for older children. It is worth it just for the reading lists. We always use the maps. My children get tired of doing coloring pages around 7th grade. Other than that it is good. Jennie
  15. I have had FOUR thumb suckers. Yep, that's right all four of mine sucked their thumbs. The first one stopped just prior to turning 10 on his own. The second one stopped just after she turned 7 after a visit to the dentist. Apparently that motivated her. The twins stopped when they were six as one of them was in need of orthodontia. This is how we did it. We set up an incentive chart. The chart was to go back to the orthodonistist at the end of 30 days. For every day that there was no thumb sucking they got a smiley face. If there was a day were they sucked their thumb, they got a frowny face and we had to start counting all over again. The goal was 30 days with no frowny faces. If you got one you had to go back to the beginning. They also picked out a reward for going 30 days. We set this up on day 1. The other thing is that the reward for going 30 days must be something that can be taken away if they go back to thumb sucking. So, going to MacDonald's, having a friend over, going to the park, are not good rewards. It needs to be something tangible and meaningful. So, a new game, a doll, a toy, etc. would all be appropriate. One tip we were given was to put an ace bandage around the elbow of the arm with the thumb they suck. This reminds them when they are about to put the thumb in their mouth that they should not be doing that. It gets it before the thumb actually enters the mouth. Another thing my girls did on their own was to bury their hand under their pillows before they went to sleep to keep them from putting their thumbs in their mouths. This worked well with my daughters. Some kids need more time and more persistance. That is why the tangible rewards are so important. I hope this helps some. Jennie
  16. I am sorry. I am not clear on what your friend is looking for. Is she pulling someone out of school mid year? I just didn't really see the question. Perhaps I missed it. Jennie
  17. Shari, There are a lot of threads with the same information in them. I will post the link of what I have written before. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72742&highlight=AAS Jennie
  18. I have used HTW for all of my children. Jennie
  19. My rule of thumb is when using yeast you can substitute hard wheat, and when using baking soda or baking powder substitute soft (pastry) wheat. When we transitioned to whole wheat I tried making waffles with hard wheat, and it did NOT receive a very warm reception from my crew. That is when I learned the difference between hard and soft wheat. Jennie
  20. Well, my children NEED to get back to a routine, but I don't quite have all of my ducks in a row with my planning. I am still trying to workout how to start History Odyssey midyear, and I haven't planned the specifics for WWE since I am going it without the workbook. Jennie
  21. I feel your pain. I spend so much more now that my children are older. Jennie
  22. I used to tutor. I was working up to 6 days a week when my children were small. I placed an ad in our local family magazine. That is where most of my clients came from. I got a few by word of mouth. I am a certified teacher. I chaged $25 per half hour 10 years ago. I don't know what the going rate would be now, and it differs from one location to another. I am in Western NY. Jennie
  23. I am not on any official list. My blog I hope you have a speedy recovery. Jennie
  24. Would you mind putting a link to it in this thread? My eyes can't seem to find what thread you are talking about. Jennie
  25. I would love to know the answer to this as well. Jennie
