  1. I have A Treasury of Children's Literature edited by Armand Eisen copyright 1992. It contains fables, traditional stories, fairy tales, classic stories and American tales. Jennie
  2. I have been on for about 3 months now, and I like it a lot. I don't spend a lot of time there, but I have gotten back in touch with a lot of women from my sorority. Jennie
  3. I am using it without the workbook, and it is not hard to do especially if you have a good literature anthology. It probably takes me about 10 minutes to flip through the book and figure out what need to be done for the week. I don't use the workbook because we are almost in year 3 and there is not workbook. In addition, the lines in the workbook are not designed for older students. Jennie
  4. My kids really liked Rush Hour. Since we got our very first game system, the kids are enjoying Need For Speed Carbon (14 yo son) and Lego Star Wars (the girls). Jennie
  5. What good tips, Anne! It is always a careful walk for me from the counter to the oven. As for the pie storage, they need to be chilled because it is a custard. Do you have a garage or mudroom that is between 30 and 40 degrees. You could put the pies there. Jennie
  6. My favorite is CLE Sunrise Edition Math. I have used way more math programs than I care to admit. Jennie
  7. We use Emergen-C. I take 4 packets per day at the first sign of a cold. This works best. It doesn't work as well once the cold has established itself, but I do keep it up. I also take Berry Well which is sold by Beeyoutiful. I use Traditional Medicinal Throat Coat tea w/ echinacea. I hope you feel better soon. Jennie
  8. My dd and I will be doing this in the spring for her 13 birthday. We plan to go to Lancaster County, PA. That is just our style. Jennie
  9. :iagree: It is an incredible amount of work, and I am not sure how much money I am really spending. I have been through a lot of flour and sugar this week. I think it is probably more expensive than I think. I tend to bake for my mother and MIL who no longer bake for themselves anymore. I make my dad an apple pie because I know he likes it. I do give the Sunday school teachers bread or spiced nuts. I am wondering what to do for the neighbors though. I would like to reach out to them a little bit, but after this discussion, and my incredible busy baking day I am wondering if I shouldn't come up with a different plan. Time is short though. Jennie
  10. I have not had a credit card in about 8 years. We do have a debt card with a MasterCard logo on it. That is what we use. I have never had a problem with it, and we do rent hotel rooms and such. Jennie
  11. No, it is the other way around. :001_smile: Spiraling is continuous review. Mastery is not. Jennie
  12. :iagree: Everything she said! These aren't word lists. They are concepts.
  13. Yes, I just use my regular bread recipe. You will have to shorten the cooking time. I divide up my dough, roll the pieces into a rope and twist into a knot. Have fun! Jennie
  14. If you packed something you would assure yourself food, and probably save some money, too. Jennie
  15. I didn't run into a lot of bickering until we had all teens and preteens. Obviously they argued some, but it has only been in the past year or so that I have seen it escalate. Jennie
  16. I also have two children using two different levels of AAS. I struggled with implementing AAS at the beginning. I was doing a lesson a day. This year I realized I had to do something different. I treat each step as a week's work. Here is how I break it down: Monday: Introduce new material and spell with tiles. Tuesday: Review cards and spell on paper. Wednesday:Review cards and spell more words on paper Thursday: Dictation of sentences or phrases. If the new material is long then I will split Monday's work into two days, and we will have spelling five days instead of four. I have found this system to be very workable. This means we are only spending 10-15 minutes per day on spelling. This is very managable for me and the girls. This week my more natural speller did two steps because one of the steps did not have new words. It was just introducing new material. AAS is the most on target, appliable spelling program that we have ever used. I hope you can find success in using it with your children. Jennie
  17. Yep, it started here around 8 AM. It is still snowing. I don't know what the total will be. I imagine it will be near a foot. It is still snowing at nearly 2 PM. Jennie
  18. My oldest is only 14 (closing in on 15), and this doesn't seem to be an issue for us. I am the only one in the house with a cell phone. My kids don't see the point of them for their ages. I think the bottom line for me is this. Unless the child is paying for themselves (food, utilities, a rent close to that of a real apartment) and are over 18, they must abide by the rules we have established. If you establish rules then they need to abide by them. Of course, you need to have a lot of discussions with teens. Our basic rule is that you need to be upstairs by 9 PM on a school night. I do tell the younger ones when to turn their lights out. I never tell my son because it is just not a problem. Teens should not be on line in the middle of the night. They are not adults. She needs to understand your role as a parent. Just because she can do something doesn't mean that it is a good thing to do. Ultimately, we want our teens to police themselves, but in the mean time we need to do it. Tell her to read a book if she can't sleep. Best wishes, Jennie
  19. I did this last year, so my 8th grade son would finish. We did two chapters a week from January until May. I almost finished, but not quite. They were able to finish reading on their own. My goal at that point because of our limited time was exposure only. It was not my intent to go indepth and chew on things. I knew he would get a chance to do that again in high school. For us that worked out fairly well. It certainly wasn't ideal, but it worked. Jennie
  20. Just wanted to give another thumbs up for HWT. All four of my children have used it. I did have the TM. I didn't use it a lot. Jennie
  21. I understand that kids like the sets that Lego creates and not just the building blocks themselves. My daughters have one of the house sets. I really like the "town" scene sets, but they are very pricey. We also have a horse set. Jennie
  22. I don't count weeks. I use HST and it tells me we have completed 90 days. This is half of my school year. It is 18 weeks. I am happy to be ending the second quarter of the year. I am ready to be on vacation. We are winding down a lot this week, and then we will be off for 2 weeks. Jennie
  23. Did she faithfully use her flouride? I remember the orthodontist showing my kids a picture of a patient with white spots on their teeth from not using the flouride. I am sorry this happened to your daughter. I hope it can be fixed. Jennie
