  1. Great book, I think it is too high of a reading grade level, though, especially in the descriptions. The dialogue is a nice level, if I can't find anything else I might try to select dialogue heavy passages.
  2. I am copying Staples' plan for adults and have picked several passages from H G Wells' "War of the Worlds" to use a silent reading speed test for adults and students reading at at least the 10th grade level, but want a pre 1923 childrens book that will not have bad language, slurs, etc. Basically, as neutral as possible. Ideas? The books I can think of are all either clearly boy or girl books or at too high of a reading level. (Finishing up a new DVD series for elementary level and want to test a theory that it will improve silent reading speed, even for those reading at grade level, if their MWIA scores show a slowdown on sight words vs phonics words.)
  3. My school was one of the BRI schools, all my classmates learned to read well, we were a working poor neighboorhood, here is a study that looked at BRI students in high school, they were much better off, and even more powerful percentage wise for poor and minority students. http://www.3rsplus.com/research_reports.htm Poor methods hurt poor and minority students the most, they don't have the generational phonics knowledge or the money to remediate. The growth of things like Kuman masks the failure of the poor methods. I knew one student who got math tutoring in my elementary school, now a lot of students are getting tutoring.
  4. Normal, lots of good suggestions. Use these, go over sounds on one page chart daily, cut out and give several letters from the cards when making words, I like to start with one vowel and around 5 consonants, then move up to more consonants, then 2 vowels and a few consonants, eventually all letters. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/Resources/40LChartsCombined.pdf You can watch my Blending and first 2 Know Sight Words YouTube videos for ideas on using the cards. https://m.youtube.com/channel/UC7yiFJ9K3tTseq4tYGCJTyA
  5. The 1960s and 1970s Dolciani Pre Algebra and algebra start with set theory and everything in later chapters is tied back to set theory. I found it really helpful and interesting as a big picture person to see that. The later Dolcianis do not have set theory.
  6. Math major who had a regular job, had to tutor his kids and neighbor kids because of poor math teaching, now teaches math and writes education articles, an interesting history of math education in the U.S. He likes Saxon amd Singapore and is not a fan of poorly designed "fuzzy" math, explains why common core math is a problem, especially for less intelligent kids who cannot make the jumps, according to him it is not incremental or well designed. https://www.amazon.com/Math-Education-U-S-Still-Crazy/dp/1523928204/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1474012233&sr=8-1&keywords=barry+garelick
  7. It could be problems from sight words, a phonological processing problem, or a vision problem, different fixes for different problems. Here is how to try to sort it out with free and cheap resources before spending a lot of money on expensive evaluations or expensive programs you may or may not need. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/dyslexia.html
  8. my online lessons, read write type http://www.talkingfingers.com/read-write-type/ I have some youtube videos that are more fun but not as comprehensive as my online phonics lessons. Here it is, the boring ones have a nice little warning, boring label. https://m.youtube.com/channel/UC7yiFJ9K3tTseq4tYGCJTyA

  10. My black and white charts and cards. Color them in, then make a few simle words with the cards. Probably will work better if you cut out cards yourself unless you have a lot of helpers. You can keep each child's cut out cards in a zip lock baggie with their name to keep them straight. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/Resources/40LChartsCombined.pdf
  11. All free to print, phonics to the 12th grade level, spelling and syllable division rules; how to explain syllables and syllable division in the guide. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/WellTaughtPhonicsStudent.html
  12. Nonsense words and word lists. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/WellTaughtPhonicsStudent.html
  13. I would have her watch my pre reading skills videos and watch the blending video with the children. Then read through my dyslexia page and post on the special needs board here for help once she has a better idea where the problem may be so she can get the proper resources to address it, there are different approaches based in the underlying problem. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/dyslexia.html
  14. Thanks, I was just looking for resources for this. I had to find videos for my daughter to understand this and now my son needs some additional resources, it has been a few years so I did not have them readily available.
  15. Keep warm for an hour, low for 30 min, keep warm an hour, low 30 min, repeat until ready to eat is what I do with a crock pot like that.
  16. Good lego block illustration of why blending is hard, scroll down to allophones: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/blendingwords.html ETA: And pics and explanation from my dyslexia page, scroll dow to the atomic nature of syllables: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/dyslexia.html
  17. The first minute and a half of my phonics lesson one actually talks about building the foundation of a house and then shows a house with building blocks of letters, then syllables, then two syllable words, then 2+ syllable words. http://www.thephonicspage.org/iPodmovies/ipodlsn1.html
  18. Syllable division and multi syllable words early. I like the grade level arranged words in Webster, they like to see progression through grade levels. When I added in multi syllable words to my tutoring, it really helped the confidence of my older students, and, as a bonus, got my students to much higher grade levels than when I used conventional phonics materials meant for a younger child.
  19. Free to print fast paced, or student paced a bit slower, alternative to teach rules and phonics to 12th grade level: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/WellTaughtPhonicsStudent.html
  20. You can print the I See Sam readers for free. They are phonics based and very incremental, so confidence building, cute pics and much more fun than BOB books, too. http://www.marriottmd.com/sam/ I have had a lot of remedial students over the years from sight words, here is how and why not to teach sight words as wholes, how to teach them with phonics. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/sightwords.html You can also get in repetition to build confidence with fun blending games, some students take a lot more repetition than others, here are a few fun blending ideas: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/blendingwords.html
  21. From my well trained phonics student page, the guide to Blend Phonics/Webster speller page 11, U30 and U31, explanation on how to teach, common letters the short oo sound comes before. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/Resources/Blend%20Phonics%20Syllables1.pdf http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/WellTaughtPhonicsStudent.html According to recent brain research, the brain of a good reader taught is never reading a word by sight, but is always procssing the letters and letter team sounds for every word, just super fast in parallel, my sight word page has links. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/sightwords.html Dialects may vary how sounds need to be taught, if you say the sounds slightly different, just explain that.
  22. Some of the music of today has some 80's elements. My daughter likes Twenty One Pilots, I like some of their songs, they remind me of music I liked in high school. I actually like their cover of Mad World better than the original, and I liked the original at the time. The pouffy 80's hair will hopefully never come back, though...
  23. You can always review later with a mastery program like Blend Phonics, free online, the mastery layout it makes it easy to skip sections and move on to areas that do need review. Reading is such an important skill, I reviewed for a few years after the basics were taught, it only takes a week or two and is well worth it, you can also add in spelling rules while you review, here is how to add in spelling rules and syllables and syllable division to Blend Phonics as a review for a student taught with phonics: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/WellTaughtPhonicsStudent.html
  24. You can use my concentration game as a fun way to build up practice. I also like the I See Sam readers. http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Phonics/concentrationgam.html She could also try building her own words with my cards, another fun way to get in some practice, direct link to the cards and then some fun blending ideas for younger students from my blending page: http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/Resources/40LChartsCombined.pdf http://www.thephonicspage.org/On%20Reading/blendingwords.html
