  1. Nothing like hearing your kids sing Fairytale of New York while they decorate the tree to make it feel like Christmas.

At least it was an accident at your house. Here, I have a mind like a sieve these days. The teens find it amusing and sometimes shocking to get music suggestions from a mother who was in college during the punk scene and who later worked in advertising with music promoters during the grunge days. I suspect I may not have understood some of the lyrics at that point in time.

And they'd heard it before... just hadn't paid enough attention to grab the lyrics.

I especially love when the run AWAY from tile/vinyl and TO the carpeting to deposit their gift. *ugh*

I am glad to know that I am not the only one with perverse cats. We have so little carpet in our house. How do they do that?

It's our old, stupid cat (not her fault, DH got her after she was abandoned way, way too young) who comes running for string cheese wrappers. In days past before the kids were properly trained, she'd occasionally snag one and would spend the better part of a week trying to disgorge it. Grrr. Cats. Gotta love 'em, and stock up on enzymatic cleaning fluids.

  3. Today is our 15th wedding anniversary. Not quite so cool as if it were a 12th for 12/12/12. :)

DH got his first tattoo last month (after coffee), of his own design: Kokopelli with a ukulele. I was at the coffee shop this morning, we (and the other adults) polished off two bottles of wine yesterday for DD's birthday party, and today just happens to be library day. Monday is pub night. :P

      Happy Day to you guys!

  4. What a horrible day. Our dog was attacked on our afternoon walk, slipped his collar and disappeared. Thankfully he came home, but not before many tears (many mine). He's a sweet, shy, formerly terribly neglected shelter dog we've had for about eight months. So the good part: "home" IS "home" to him, and he wasn't badly injured. Gotta keep telling myself that. Phew.

How scary. So glad he found his way home. Hugs to all of you.

  5. High tea then Happy Hour with friends. A nice way to spend Sunday.

  6. I have taken the drastic measure of not only separating my lovely children, but warning them I'm about to finish the Christmas shopping, so they'd better stay separated. Yup. I've resorted to (implied) threats. It's that kind of day. Need more coffee.

Ha. I kicked everyone out of the house and cracked open a Jubelale. Too light this year, girly even, but it still might do the trick. Going on a rum run later, but it was pre-planned (really) with an eye to Christmas Eve buttered rums.

It's apt in this case, unfortunately. I'm to the point of scatterbrained-ness that I find myself planing to make plans. :P

  7. About to put pencils up my nostrils and say, "wibble."

  8. Into the lion's den...

  9. Outing to the pediatric dentist. Two unexpected referrals. One to an orthodontist (thought we had another year, but no). One to a speech pathologist for tongue thrust. The latter probably isn't covered. Bah. Humbug.

Hey Moira - do some checking online. DD9 has a tongue thrust and I make her do exercises at home!

Thanks. Have you noticed any progress?

I have her doing some exercises at home because I won't be able to pay for therapy until April, should she still need it. The speech pathologist I spoke with was very understanding and helpful.

It was a bit of a shock to find out that she's pushing her bottom teeth right out of her gums. :(

  10. Bought bath towels online. My Black Friday is done.

  12. Uck! Few things are more disgusting than taking a swig of coffee and having a bit of broken-off and softened rice pasta sticks WF insists you use through the little sipping hole into your mouth. Gah! (My regular coffee shop is closed... it provides its customers with spoons.)

  13. I can't believe how much I love that my kids love Ella Fitzgerald. :D

  14. Gah! Chicken backs for stock didn't come in, so they comped me turkey backs instead. DH is off to borrow a massive stock pot from a friend.

I'm good. I turned butcher and then pulled out a pasta pot. Everything fits with an inch to spare. Smells sooooo good.

      Did you add chicken feet????

Didn't have any... only turkey backs. I do it the Cook's Illustrated way: saute an onion, brown the backs, then sweat them backs for a while before adding the water and a couple bay leaves. It's ready in 90 minutes, and is soooo good. Dog and cats are happy too, 'cause they get the meat.

  16. A few seconds of sun, quickly followed by more soul-numbing rain (it's a special kind). And now another hint of sun... toying with me.

  17. You're on a roll today. :)

  18. Thanks, I can hardly wait to see the restored film. It seems almost inconceivable to me that each frame of the original was hand painted.

  19. The kids are doing a summer photography project with the deer. :)

  20. http://www.strangerinthewoods.com/shop/lost/l_plush1.htm

This is it, though our deer bears little resemblance to its former, cutesy self. The coax cable skeleton (I kid you not) worked its way out years ago, and seams and tears have been repaired so many times it gives something of a Frankenstein effect. Yesterday it was clad in a ball gown we made from felt, and today it's going to Park Day. I often wish I'd lived half the life this deer had. :tongue_smilie:

  21. My almost 6yo asked me to honor her zombie-astronaut-reindeer-hummingbird-pirate-assassin. How could I refuse such an earnest and innocent child? :P

    ETA: I forgot vampire.

  22. I'm not going to post about Hox gene clusters... I'm not going to post about Hox gene clusters. Really. I'm not. But I want to. I hate evolution debates. :(

  23. The One-Star Fairy was after you today. I bumped the thread rating up... not that it really matters, but the sheer childishness of some here amazes me.

  24. Thanks, it's been tough keeping more or less on topic. :)

  25. It might be aging eyes too.
