  1. I was wondering the same thing recently. I think I'm going to try New American Cursive.
  2. HA! The Cartoon Road to Reading. I love it! I actually have been making my preschooler watch Letter Factory at least 3 times a week lately, cause he's struggling to remember letter sounds. It's helping! I have looked at all three of these books. I don't think you could go wrong with any of them, unless your child hates it. My personal favorite is what my K'er uses, in my siggy, combined with simple readers here and there. I switch him to Phonics Road next year, when he's mature enough to learn all the phonogram and rules.
  3. Knights, without a doubt. With two of my own boys and two boys that I babysit, knights are the most sought after and fought after. Make sure they have swords. :)
  4. "Other", because there are qualifiers on the yes and no! No, I do not have one, but I wouldn't mind having one! I don't have the $$ to buy one or the $$ to pay for a data plan. I was given an iPad last week, though! I'm pretty psyched and content right now. :)
  5. Currently using Horizons and switching soon to Math Mammoth.
  6. Same here. Maybe we need to start some threads to drum up interest? A few can ask questions and a few others can rave about how wonderful it is, then all the lurkers can jump in and buy it! :D
  7. Writing (learning!) 30 words in a day sounds like a lot. I already hear griping about the 20 words in PR. Am I understanding this right? Mon - 40 words (all 30, then 10 written again) Tues - 30 words Wed - 40 words Thurs - 30 words Fri - 30 words For all grades?? Even 1st grade? My DD is pretty good at writing, but she'd hate me forever if I made her write that much every day (she's 2nd grade). Not only is it writing the words, but it's thinking them through to remember HOW to write them. Is there something I'm missing here?
  8. I ordered the 4th edition last night through Amazon for $6. While I wait, I'm reading my library's 5th edition. It seems confusing, but I'm hoping it'll pull together. I'm looking for something to replace Phonics Road without losing all the depth that PR offers. And since this is the original, I couldn't go wrong, right??:)
  9. I used an old bulletin board. I covered one side with cream flannel and just stapled it to the back. The felts/flannels stick to it just fine! We hardly ever used it, though. :)
  10. It's working for me right now. Maybe it was a temporary glitch?
  11. Excellent idea about the games! I might do the same, much to my children's dismay. Thanks for the tips! I went ahead and downloaded the Kindle app, then promptly tracked down all the AmblesideOnline yr 1 books that I was eyeing last week :D
  12. My friend just GAVE me her old iPad! :001_wub: Can you believe it?! The kids are dying for me to put games on it, but the main thing I want is books. I had been thinking about getting a Nook or something. I want to download old books from google books and I'd like to read free and cheap books from amazon.com. Someone please tell me what app(s) are best for that? I tried searching, but it seems that there are several options. I'm confused! Bookmarking pages would be a preferred feature. I saw that I could "write" on pages with Notability? Help me out, please! I'm all boggled. :willy_nilly: What ONE or TWO apps would be best to get me started?
  13. Is it done by someone here or something? I haven't noticed talk of it till today. Someone tell me about all the excitement so I can be excited, too!
  14. First, thank you all for your replies! Second, my apologies for asking a question, then forgetting to reply!! I've looked through all of the suggested books now. New American Cursive may be exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks!! :D
  15. It could be that one parent left first. The second parent left shortly after, looked around and didn't see the girl, and assumed that she went with the first parent. Maybe they'd even talked about it but hadn't finalized plans. Who knows. They might have feel really horrible when they realized what happened. It could be that this was the very first time they did NOT double check! Of course, it might be a lot of other more stupid things! But we don't know. Now they and all the rest of us will hopefully be extra vigilant!
  16. I also hated reading it out loud. We found this version at the library and loved it! I highly recommend it :)
  17. Drop it. I would die of boredom, too, if *I* had to read the same page of a book multiple times. :)
  18. There's a lot of writing with Phonics Road. I wouldn't use both PR and R&S for that reason. I agree with momofabcd. It's pretty pricey to not use the whole thing. I don't believe it would be a problem to use a different handwriting style, though.
  19. My lefty DD, almost 8, is interested in learning cursive. She has good fine motor skills and writes well. HWT is my default, but I don't love the style :) I love HWT printing and the general layout of the books! I am leaning toward this because she can do it on her own. She's motivated enough to learn that I could probably just hand it to her and never mention it again. MAJOR PLUS. Phonics Road starts teaching cursive later in the year. Though I've decided to back off on PR and use something else, I might try to get her started using that. The author is left-handed, so I have confidence in that! Her style is simple, like HWT, but not as... ugly. Mrs. Beers has perfect handwriting. Those are both very good options, but give me more! I want to know ALL my options. What did you use? :bigear:
  20. Horizons math has all of those things, too. The lessons are predictable in length, the teacher's guide tells what to teach when, there's daily drill (flashcards, etc), and extra suggestions as needed. We've been using Horizons. That said, I intend to switch us to Math Mammoth. We supplemented with a booklet recently and it was great! Noeo Science has books to read, but it's not excessive. Everything you need for the experiments is included in the kit. It wasn't working for us, but my SIL likes it. Maybe it would work for you. Next year I'll have 1st and 3rd grade. I need to decide on language arts for both. We've been using Phonics Road, but I think it's time for a change for DD (the 3rd grader). I've decided to drop it for the remainder of the year. I might use PR1 to get DS started, though. The rule tunes have been great. We'll continue on with SOTW. We've just dropped Noeo Physics I and started learning about the human body instead. I guess we'll just do that till we're done! I'm thinking we might learn about birds next. Or rocks, cause DD wants to be a geologist. That might be our plan for next year. Birds and rocks. :D As mentioned, I'm switching us over to MM. Right now I'm waiting to see if the HSBC deal works out.
  21. Phonics Pathways was written for adults, as well as children.
  22. Thank you for the reminder!! I haven't thought of it all day! ETA: Do we not like DST? I'm always excited about having more evening daylight!
  23. That's exactly how I do Story of the World. I try to get books to supplement, but it's okay if it doesn't happen. We just continue on. The activity guide provides questions to help with narration, activities, book suggestions, and pictures to color. My SIL does the same with Mystery of History.
