But most of these suggestions are low calorie - she says she is TOO thin. She needs to eat heartily but not eat gluten and nuts

No one suggested a no-carb diet. just eat carbs that ARENT wheat - corn chips, french fries, mashed potatoes.
  4. Not exactly what you were asking for, but maybe the 'color me physics' books here? http://physicscentral.com/experiment/colormephysics/index.cfm (free printables)

    cravings

Yeah, i went through serious withdrawal when i quit wheat and dairy. It lasted 10 days. Nut cravings could be fat and protein. You have to find other foods that you find as satisfying - like bacon! I use organic blue corn chips as my staple cracker-sub. they go great with cheese, which obviously has protein and fats like nuts. Being too thin can also mean that your gluten issues are damaging your intestines so you are not absorbing your nutrition well enough
  6. fwiw, i went freestyle with math. We only did primary challenge so far, because challenge got to 2-variable algebra problems too quickly and scared my son. We did some time4learning early on, one singapore book, a bunch of murderous maths books, a few random 'fun' supplemental math books from scholastic teachers express, a few random printed practice worksheets off the web, LOF fractions and decimals/percents, a little khan academy, one class from here, and now we are reviewing using Spectrum Grade 6 workbook. Ok, his knowledge is very spotty and he's a tad lazy . . . but i plan to move on to LOF pre-algebra books. I'm not capable of staying on the straight and narrow path when he hates it. If we miss something, he can learn it quickly and easily when it comes up again (and if it never comes up, he didnt need it lol)
  7. yeah,i'm on diet due to food allergies, so no cheating per se - but i always have marshmallows around for sugar cravings, and we have potato chips with dinner 1-2/week, and my biscuits are mostly starch and fat . ..
  8. where i am now says 1 inch and where I grew up says 3 inches, but I think it took more than 3 inches most of the time when i was a kid?
  9. I didnt read the sharpener thread, but I've read that some of the Ticonderoga pencils are not as good quality as others, depending maybe on where they are made. Could you just have a bad batch? Once i bought my first box, the kids refused to use anything else. And they dont seem light to us.
  10. so, very expensive, but i found digestive enzyme helped me a lot esp with what comes out the other end. I'm still having my share of issues, but it might be worth a try. if the doctor proscribes it, you can at least pay for it w spending account?
  11. Is there really a school in your town that could handle an extremely gifted kid? He would most likely be stuck doing work years below his ability, all day long, come home frustrated and angry. I mean, unless you have some exceptional schools. Its really hard to break a kid. Keep feeding him books and workbooks and take care of yourself. I havent read the depression thread (unless thats the one where you stopped taking meds and it came back? In which case, you just have to wait for the meds to kick in again - there's no shame in needing your medicine. we do what we have to do to be the best parent we can) Oh, and you might want to mention to dh to lay off because he's not being helpful.
  12. Since i've never heard the term, please explain where you saw it?
  13. It will be interesting to see the pants in motion. But really, no, i dont spend a lot of time looking at the pants. But sometimes the overall look strikes me.
  14. oh, not me - i took martial arts with the kids in a homeschool class for a year and a half and injured myself testing . . . and was not able to walk up and down steps for 18 mo after that. In the balance, i'm thinking it wasnt worth taking the class :confused1: sorry thats kinda hijacking. I did break my foot getting out of bed once, tho
  15. IMO that just means that 'reading' shouldnt be a subject for him. Have literature (older kids books have more complex language).
  16. My husband found a small, local printer cheaper than the chains
  17. But the same size last-gen instant pot is only $20 more . .. i'm seriously obsessed
  18. Its a lot easier to find a 'safe' homeschool-run server than to run your own server.
  19. a friend posted this article on facebook and it made me think of you. It only took me 7 attempts with the search function on this website to find this thread lol http://www.hormonesmatter.com/cyclic-vomiting-syndrome-mitochondrial-dysfunction/
  20. So, how about this - how about TELL him that you want to work at being better at it. ASK him to help you. Ask him to let you know if he likes it or if it sounds dumb. Ask him to tell you when you missed a good opportunity. Its . . a relationship. If he knows you are trying to do something nice for him, he might be willing to . . help.
  21. I had a non-stick slowcooker and it started peeling. So i wanted a stainless steel one and saw they are very pricey. then i discovered the Instant Pot, which is an electronic pressure cooker with a stainless steel pot. It cooks everything I did in my slow cooker, but better and faster. I dont think i'll ever buy a slow cooker again. Oh, and it has a slow cooker feature if you really want.
  22. My teen hosted one on a remote location, which he had to pay rent on (I think it was $11 a month or so?). that way we didnt have to let people have access to our network or worry about his computer being on all the time. At that price, he had a limit of maybe 8 people on the server at a time. He only let in friends or friends of friends. at 7 .. . . who does he intend to have on his server? I mean, you can do a local thing on your home network so your kids can play together, without opening up your IP to other people - my husband was big on NOT allowing other people access to our home network, which you have to do to let other people play on a server you host on your own computer. Think of the server this way - when you play minecraft, you can play it by running the program on your computer and playing alone, or you can go online and find where someone else is running the program on a different computer and letting other people play, remotely, on his computer. So you can play with other people. So if your 7 yo wants to run a server, that means he wants to run the program and let other people come play on it. Which means other people will be getting remote access to your computer. Which is what my husband said no to. My teen had friends who ran servers on their home PCs, but they crashed a LOT - very few PCs are really powerful enough to do it smoothly.
  23. fwiw, many of the older doctors had young male companions to do the running for them. But not Pertwee - he'd been in the brittish version of the green berets or something.
