  1. When i'm somewhere and a christian prayer is said, i try to lower my eyes a bit, even tho I'm not christian, just out of respect for those around me and those performing the prayer. Except at my high school graduation, where I was surprised and rather angry . . .
  2. I'm hesitant to offer my son as a pen pal - we tried a new pen pal 2 weeks ago, son of a fb friend of mine who is also doing the class, but they only managed 2 emails each before it fizzled out.
  3. My 10 yo started this yesterday - but then had technical difficulties. We've reinstalled java and hopefully we'll be up and running again soon.
  4. Ugg, adhd meds are notorious for that. Are you really seeing enough improvement with the meds to be sure they are worth it? I had the opposite problem - my son went on Risperdone and gained a pound and a half a month for the first 18 months. It definitely was worth it to us, though.
  5. I think you need to fight to the death over it. :banghead: :smash: Obviously there's no right answer. Maybe you can draw a line down the middle of the house and do one half each way. If you currently have compact florescents, they dont burn out. they fade away. Very annoying. My biggest concern right now is the PRICE of the LEDs. I have a ton of CF in the house, still unused, so it'll be a long time.
  6. Ok, this thread is a combination of *giggle* and *gasp*
  7. Yeah, also curious why. My 10 yo grew 2 inches and only gained half a pound last year. He's very picky. I'm holding off on panicking still, though. I am still trying to get him to eat more, but . . . really, in my core, I believe that kids eat because they are growing, they dont grow because they are eating. I was the last person in my school to hit 100 lb or 5 foot tall. My daughter (different father) is 5'6 and 103 lb. She's fine. I'm fine. I do try to get him to eat a lot of nuts and nutbutter - we're off dairy and gluten, and he's off soy, so its really hard.
  8. Oh, no, other health problems, i get - my dog has serious digestive issues, so he gets a special food and home-made wet food. And who knows, maybe we'll regret our choices when they are older and sick . . . well, no, hubby never has second thoughts lol
  9. I'm more with Mergath. We like our cats, but we arent going to make ourselves crazy over them. We do do canned food every day at dinner time, and dry food out most of the day - the canned food because one of them had a UTI. But the two brothers are fat, and the younger cat is getting a little heavier. And we dont care. they're just cats . . . i try to keep up with the flea meds because i dont want them suffering, but i really dont care if they die 2 years sooner because they are fat.
  10. I realized yesterday that I had not assigned my teen ANY science yet this year! ok, that was only 6 school days, but still . . doh!
  11. Was thinking about this more - it reminds me of something I read in a parenting book a long time ago - telling a kid to do something wtihout teaching him how is just setting him up for failure. Its also the 'love languages' issue - he expresses his love for you in some ways that dont speak to you, and he is blind to what you need, and communication is the only cure. There are books and websites with suggestions on planning a date - but he will need positive encouragement. guys really have fragile egos. They dont want to try to put effort in to something for you, something thats really hard for them to do, and then have you tell them they did it all wrong. You might want to try training him slowly - like first ask him to plan a dinner out, tell him a few possible restaurants and give him the babysitters number, and ask him to do the rest for you. If that works, make the next assignment a little harder. Train him. You have to teach people to treat you the way you want to be treated. There is no fairy god mother waving a magic wand to make our men more like our fantasies, but most of them are trainable. Mmm, mine, maybe not lol. I've been trying to train him to kiss and hug me more often for 8 years . . . ok, he's improved some over 8 years. But its still a work in progress.
  12. Haha kale waffles, hysterical! But i have a chocolate-hating kid. I belong to a CSA once where we had mostly kale one season, and mostly sweet peppers the next, and then the farmer got too frustrated to continue lol . . . one of the customers pointed out that kale made a quick and easy addition to ramen noodles . . .
  13. Earth science, have you checked out Nat Geo / Jason project (or whatever its called now?) I have to admit, I always loved science, but geology didnt feel like science to me, and I found geologists boring compared to other sciences! I mean, i'm glad they are out there, tho.
  14. Mmm, i love annoying the neighbors with my garden. After getting turned in to the county TWICE for grass over 12 inches in my flower beds WHEN I WAS ON CRUTCHES DUE TO AN INJURY . . . I really wanted to get a nude garden statue . . . but they cost too much.
  15. Well, thats a losing battle. He is who he is. If it doesnt occur to him, if he couldnt care either way, you need to TELL him what you need. He sees the world differently than you do. He wont magically know what you expect.
  16. I also get hit with deductibles at the beginning of the year (just got a big one yesterday at the pharmacy). But you also have to check - some will charge you crazy high if you buy the brand name and there is also a generic. You have to get your doc to ok the generic version. If you are on the policy, you should be able to call and ask.
  17. Yeah, my mom didnt take too well to my father's conversion. I'm pretty sure she never told her mom, who would have been horrified. I'm not even sure if my mom ever went to one of the services.
  18. I'm really nervous about being there next year. I mean, i have a senior who will be starting community college in the fall, and I negotiated one more year at home to help with the transition, but then I need to push my youngest back in school and go find a job. Part of me looks forward to it and part of me is already mourning. Oh, and I felt like year 4 of homeschooling it became easy. I was confident and comfortable and the boys and i had come to an agreement about expectations, etc
  19. I do think my father was introduced to messianic judiasm through amway when my parents were doing that. Amway had a very strong conservative christian right-wing bend, including that the wife should be focused on serving her husband - which made my mom the feminist really angry. But I think during the sunday services of their retreats, there would be a jews for jesus option? im not sure, but i do THINK thats where my dad found it.
  20. I also have to be the one who 'does' the big maintenance stuff too. He says if he had it to do again, he wouldnt have bought a house. I used to plan activities mostly for the family to do together, but it got harder and harder and no, if i dont plan it, nothing happens. He did plan date nights occasionally, but the last play we went to left me depressed for days (which isnt to say it was bad, but just that I was really reacting to it), and my food allergies popped up and he stopped planning things. He mostly liked taking me to restaurants. Plus his income dropped after I quit working, so he's really stressed about money all the time. But really, you have to decide what you want, and accept who is in your life. If you need dh to plan a date night once in a while, talk to him about it. If he's really incapable, accept that that is who you married. Plan things when that feeds you. Stay home when thats the better option. there's no rule about required date nights. otoh, these days we dont even watch movies together at home. it got to be too much work to find movies we both liked. We watch a movie together about once a year, not counting kid movies. Yeah, its not a fairy tale
  21. I quit in part because of the asking for items. One said her friends husband left her so she needed a hedge trimmer, but it had to be electric, and a coffee maker, but it had to have a timer on it. I thought that was nuts - i used a manual trimmer and I turn my coffee maker on in the morning. There was one guy who repeatedly asked for a laptop for school and then said you'd be blessed if you gave it to him.
  22. dh promised to wipe and re-image the hard drive of a dead pc for me for that purpose. 2 years ago. sigh.
  23. There's also an app on the WiiU for it. But on your computer you should basically be able to just click on a movie.
  24. Wow, some very authoritative theologians on this thread.
