  1. Paternal grandmother did the same thing to my mother. Took her a while to realize the same thing as you. Turned out she'd clawed herself out of poverty and married an eligible bachelor of a 'good family', and never lost an opportunity to give others the treatment that she'd gotten from his family.
  2. ......... words fail me I agree 100% with your dad ...
  3. Holy cow. I'm glad no-one was hurt -- but I can't help feeling a bit of schadenfreude over Mr. Grumpypants lawn.
  4. If you look at the chapters outlines and subheadings Chapter P of trig is essentially the topics from chapter 1 of precalc, mixed up and in a different order Chapter 1 of trig is chapter 4 of precalc Chapter 2 of trig is chapter 5 of precalc Chapter 3 of trig is almost chapter 6 of precalc, but a topic is missing in the trig book -- trigonometric form of a complex number Chapter 4 of trig is a couple of topics from chapter 2 of precalc and the missing part of chapter 6 Chapter 5 of trig is chapter 3 of precalc Chapter 6 of trig is chapter 9 of precalc As you can see, the trigonometry book is basically SOME of the chapters from the precalc book. I wouldn't do trig and then precalc for this reason.
  5. Eight cousins no, the sequel (Rose in Bloom) yes. Little men yes, not a child but a child's parent.
  6. This results in an awesome spellcheck error, since if you spell it definate the first word spellcheck comes up with is 'defiant', so all sorts of students turn in papers stating 'I defiantly believe that ...'
  7. Other than the hitchhiking, it doesn't look that bad. (Of course, I used to hitchhike every time my car broke down ... but I'd still scream in horror if my kid did it ... I didn't tell my mother about it, either :D)
  8. Serious question, not intended to be snarky: If someone were dishonest and untrustworthy enough to attempt to teach your children against your religion behind your back, would a statement of faith stop them?
  9. I'd have no problem with a statement of faith for leaders/teachers and a statement of respect and behaviour for others, but I really don't like the idea of the statement required for anyone in the group. I wouldn't join one, just on principle, even if I believed everything it said. This is not to say they don't have a right to have whatever statement they want, but I have an equal right to start my own group/join a different one if I don't like their policies.
  10. And then there's always the Plains of Passion ... errr ... passage. I don't remember the original book being that bad as far as gratuitous sex goes, but the sequels -- oh my.
  11. I went ... it was okay ... but it really would have been a lot better without the 13 year old screaming hyena brigade.
  12. Whatever you put up, make sure it goes to the edge of the property line so you don't give him ground to be a jerk in court and make his lawn a little bit bigger. I'd go with the board fence, myself. It's there immediately and impregnable. Build it nice and high and explain that it's to cover your neighbours concerns about ball playing. (Then get your kids a few vuvuzelas and a drum set :D:D:D)
  13. Hehe, yes, this is an awesome side benefit. I slipped on ice in the parking lot and did a back fall without getting hurt. A friend once was cut off by a car while riding his bike, hit the curb, went headfirst over the handlebars, and rolled out of it without being hurt.
  14. If you ask my friends, I never stop talking about Aikido. :D It's that good! Advancement is, as stated, really slow compared to other martial arts. Depending on your circumstances, this may be a good or a bad thing. You won't be paying test fees every few months either. :D
  15. If she thinks she's bad at math and feels like she has to struggle, re-doing pre-calc at the community college would probably be an awesome confidence and morale booster for her. Worst comes to worst, she's bored and gets an easy grade, and she can still take Calc in the spring as Jann stated. Given that her ACT is 31, she'd probably pass the placement test into calc, but they'll usually let you enroll lower.
  16. Have her take the placement test at the community college and see where she places, then go from there. Pre-Calculus/Trig *should* be covered in a high school precalculus class, but many, many students do not master this the first time and retake it at college.
  17. Nono, FAFSA is just the application. Free Application for Federal Student Aid. After you send in the application, they tell you what aid you can get. Since your income is low (I assume given the EFC/Pell), part of the aid you're qualified for is a grant. If that doesn't meet your needs, the rest may be loans. Someone with more income/assets would get only loans. If you want someone to go over your FAFSA results with you, the CC probably has a financial aid officer who would look at the actual form you have and explain what it all means. That's their job -- and they answer these kinds of questions all the time and have more knowledge than I do. :P
  18. EFC is your expected family contribution. The Pell Grant is different than a loan, because it does not need to be repaid. congratulations :)
  19. There are tons of "shoes" books by Noel Streatfeild. Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote a lot more than just Anne of Green Gables. I like Emily of New Moon, Jane of Lantern Hill, and Magic for Marigold best. Has she tried other books by Louisa May Alcott? Eight Cousins springs to mind. Betsy-Tacy series by Maud Hart Lovelace is another older series with girls in the lead. It's a bit dated, but Cherry Ames got a lot of girls interested in nursing. I used to read them a lot :P
  20. Asimov has edited many collections of short stories. I second 'I, Robot' Although they're not short stories, Heinlein wrote many short novels which were aimed at juveniles. The bibliography at wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_A._Heinlein_bibliography) has marked those considered juveniles with an asterisk. As a kid, I especially liked "Have Space Suit, Will Travel". I can't really count how many times I read those.
  21. No kidding. He's written a fair number of other books, and I can't think of one where he didn't manage to get in an anti-hunting poke at some point.
