  1. You can read the statement of faith on the main website to get a feel for their values. As for your daughter's views being challenged, it is possible but the students often play devil's advocate and argue opposite viewpoints. The staff is no longer allowed to due to a specific incident, but the students do and are encouraged to. We are in Oklahoma, so I can't speak to Texas, but the organization as a whole is pretty conservative.
  2. If your dc competes with NCFCA, she will be more than adequately prepared for TeenPact. My girls chose to participate in the speech day, called Political Communication Workshop. They had fun that day. :) The camp is fun and where relationships are formed. The homework isn't too bad. Most kiddos do start it early. One of my dd's dragged hers on for months, another was done in a week. You should be able to look and download it whether you are enrolled or not. Then you can schedule it in bite sized chunks. The hardest part are the papers. A strong writer with experience in research papers will have no problem. A weaker, less experienced writer with need more hand holding. The camp is just application. The real fun happens at alumni events. My kiddos have been to Congress, Endeavor, and NC. We have friends that have been to the others, but I can only speak second hand to the rest.
  3. Where to start. :) What is the time and financial commitment? It is a good choice for both boys and girls? My boy has flat feet. Does this matter?
  4. Our dc compete with NCFCA and have done TeenPact plus several alumni events. My eldest dd staffed TP last year. What would you like to know?
  5. I *might*. Though you don't want to take my word for it, we've been known to eat pizza left out (covered) overnight.
  6. Okay, looked up Mrs. Seid. Without finding the original blog, it is safe to say the blogger likely took her phrase and philosophy from this woman's methods.
  7. I am not sure who Mrs. Seid is. I just saw the quote on a homeschool blog and the article made me think a bit....could I? Should I? Yes, curricula only assuming basic supplies on hand. Most families whether homeschooling or not have basic art supplies. Most homeschool families branch out and purchase microscopes, etc. If not, I assume most can borrow. Of course, field trips are allowed. :)
  8. Yes! The pyramids, hanging towers, and other ancient feats of architecture prove otherwise. Unless, of course, the aliens did it.
  9. I wasn't planning to use the Bible as the extent of science and history studies, though I do think there is more in there about history and science than most people believe. Truthfully, I hadn't thought of using them for either at all. I suppose all Christians start their history studies somewhat with the Bible. Our local library system has Apologia science, Saxon math, the Great Courses, Zumba classes, chess club, internet access, and an extensive library loan network. I suppose that colors my view of possibilities and I'll agree the question in the topic could've been worded better. It was one found online and one I thought to be a common phrase. Library schooling is something I've given much thought to and don't know if I will actually follow through with it. The Hive is great for discussion and talking one down when they are about to jump off the cliff. Edited
  10. I wonder how the first recipe for bread came about. Or sourdough. There had to be lots of flat, tasteless unleavened bread before the first decent loaf bread. Who thought to catch yeast and then thought to add it to bread?
  11. Would it offer a good education? Would it be a lot of work for mom? What says the Hive?
  12. Today a Facebook friend of mine commented on a "share" I made. It wasn't something I shared nor does it show up in my feed. I was able to comment and could've edited it. I didn't because it was innocuous. Has my account been hacked? I know Facebook used to "like" posts for you that were similar to posts that you have liked in the past. Does it now do this with shares?
  13. 24 hours during traditional business days. 48 in especially busy times. If you call Business A on Friday, waiting until Monday or early Tuesday morning for a call back is not unreasonable. If you don't get a call back after 48 hours during a traditional business week, call again and wait another 48 hours. Repeat. If needed call Business B in the interim. When company A calls back, explain why you went with company B.
  14. It is still a very valid choice, less common than in the past, but just as valid indeed.
  15. This ^ was my first thought. He's already proven himself a liar. Don't assume he is being truthful now.
  16. A man that lies to his wife will lie to anyone. No, do not be spiteful, but protect yourself and your children. They deserve the truth and do not protect an adulterer that caused the end of your marriage.
  17. Bake bread without salt, taste, then add salt. The difference is amazing!!
  18. We do. Occasionally we do a sit down dinner, but as was stated upthread it can be upwards of $100. Its just not a wise use of our $ to do that regularly. We might, however, get 4 footlong Subway sandwiches and have them cut into thirds then round out the meal with a bag of apples, a bag of chips, and Subway cookies. A dozen cookies and 4 footlongs is only about $25, a bargain for a family my size!! Sometimes we get burgers off of the dollar menu and round out with fries or like we do with Subway. If everyone gets 2 burgers, it is still less than $25. Our other favorite restaurant is Papa Murphy's take and bake. No, most of these aren't uber healthy, but we are talking about eating out, which is not a daily occurrence. At home we mostly cook whole foods from scratch. Instead of eating out, we will often order and eat in. Walmart has yummy General Tso chicken in their deli dept.. While grocery shopping I'll call home and have my kiddos start a couple of rice cookers full of rice to go with the chicken and purchased frozen stir fry vegetables. It makes for a pretty quick dinner on grocery day!! Another meal that feels like we are eating out, is a couple of rotisserie chickens or deli fried chicken and Hawaiian bread rolls, bag of fruit like mandarin oranges and a bagged salad. We've done the movies quite a bit. We have local theaters that have free or almost free summer matinees. There is also a dollar theater nearby. The cost is $2 per person, so for our family of 11 it is only $22 to see 2nd run movies. We did see Frozen as a family in the fancy pants, overly pricey theater, but usually reserve that theater for Mommy Daddy date nights or a smaller portion of the family like the older teens seeing the Hunger Games and such. With creativity and a little work larger families can do the same things as smaller ones. Eta: While children are not entitled to movies or eating out, it is important that they don't feel the reason they can't do those things just because there are more of them. If it isn't in the budget or Mom and Dad choose not to do them, fine. If they aren't doing them only because the budget is tighter because there are more children in the family, then try to be creative and find ways to do them. You might be surprised how much you can do on a limited budget.
  19. What if the child tests positive because of second hand exposure or even eating a poppy seed muffin. No, I'm not clueless. Yes, both of those can happen. Would that cause CPS to step in? What would the ramifications be? I would agree as an option available to parents. Mandatory? Nope. Just nope.
  20. If it was a new receptionist is it possible she didn't realize what she was doing was being perceived as flirting? It's pretty brazen to flirt openly in front of one's spouse. Could she just be young and clueless?
