  1. I do not believe an international organization has any right to tell me what to teach. As pointed out above, this would not have an direct impact on homeschoolers, at least at the onset. Still, I find this is very scary. Truthfully, I think the only people that should determine the content of education are the parents. I do not think governments should determine content at all, much less at a national/international level. If governments must concern themselves with education it should be controlled at the local level, so that parents have as much input as possible.
  2. I don't love it, but it doesn't bother me, unless dc are acting up! I usually just talk to others in the line if it is somewhere like the grocery store, or bring something to do. (Although I usually don't do what I bring, because I end up talking to someone.)
  3. I would dearly love to teach all of my rising sophmore's classes myself. It is so much easier to stay home, and not drag the younger two around. However, I work 20-25 hours per week, and I'm teaching 10th, 4th and K this year. I just do not have the time to learn all the high school level material. So my dd15 will take Latin 2 online with Artesian Wells tutorials, and it looks like she is going to do a chemistry co-op as well. These are a bit hit to our budget, but I just can't learn these subjects quickly enough to stay ahead of her. I am hoping to learn Latin with/ahead off the younger two. We also do a great books group, that I lead. This takes me at least 10 hours a week to prep. This has been a great experience even though it is hard work. My ds also is in a small co-op for writing and maybe Greek/Art/Geography. The younger two have a PE co-op as well. I really would like to be home more, because we go somewhere almost every day, but everyone has something they need, and in my family there is no overlap because of the age gaps.
  4. Thanks HSmom3tn My dd15 and I laughed so hard our stomachs hurt!
  5. When I have a chance to go to yard sales, I will frequently attend 30-40 in a morning, and I agree that higher end items are harder to sell. Buyers don't always have that much cash. I might think about buying a used AG doll, for dd, but I wouldn't do it on the spur of a moment at a yard sale. (I also didn't know what the purses were.) Here yard sale prices are pretty low. For instance today, I took the kids along, so we bought a lot more fun stuff, than usual, but I still bought all of the following for less than $20 73 Pokemon cards (Yes they counted them!) about 20 pieces of clothing for dd5 2 pair of shoes for dd5 27 books 1 craft kit stomp rocket set 3 binders 6 VHS movies a framing square (dh came along as well) nice pair of Gap jeans for dd15
  6. These are so funny! We saw the following rules on the wall at a hotel pool. It was so funny that we took a picture. "Pool open 24 hours. Do not enter the pool at any other time." "Children must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18."
  7. JoAnn, She is beautiful! Congratulations! I agree that you are one tough cookie. Getting through pitocin without meds in a big accomplishment. :grouphug:
  8. Not to parrot Kate, but I agree. The Prince is an interesting read, especially for teen boys who imagine ruling the world. It is one of my favorites on our list this year.
  9. Thanks Angie. My dd has been doing every problem in all three sets. She will be thrilled to cut back some.
  10. I'm pretty sure that squatting next to our bathroom sink moved my labor with dd5 along. I was in early labor for over 2 days and nothing moved things along until I tried that. Good luck! :grouphug::grouphug:
  11. I'm assuming that you are talking about the English Books. My dd started late as well. She is doing the 8th and 9th grade books in 10th. (We started half way through the year originally.) Last year she did the last half of the 7th grade book and the 1st half of the 8th and I called it 9th grade English. These books are quite difficult. I would not try to skip the 7th/8th grade books. They cover all the grammar concepts. We have not used them yet, but it looks to me that the 9th/10th books review grammar, but focus more on writing. HTH
  12. I taught Ancient lit. to high school students last year. This year we are finishing up the Romans and moving on to the Middle Ages. I tried to keep the reading around 100 pages per week. This worked for Homer and Herodotus, but when we read Plato's Republic, I had to slow down. This year I plan to look more at the difficulty of the reading before I decide the length of the assignments. With fiction, even The Once and Future King, I'm sure you can do at least 100 pages per week.
  13. What a sad day for all of you. :grouphug: I have never thought much about having reptiles as pets, but Bella was cute.
  14. My local Barnes and Noble is so homeschool friendly that they had a booth at our homeschool conference in June, and they were there giving out discount cards.
  15. Our thrift stores here always have great finds for books. I have to be selective now because I already have over 8000 books and our house is full, but in the past I would come home with tons of books. My favorite find was the complete homeschool set of Saxon Algebra for $5.
  16. Amy, I am also trying to find vegetarian vitamins for my older dd. I did a quick check on the Animal Planet ones, and they do contain magnesium stearate. This can come from either plant or animal sources. I have to run, so I couldn't look it up any further. Good luck, and if you find the mother lode, please let me know. :001_smile:
  17. The cover is green! Thanks Carole. I guess it was $3 well spent.
  18. Thanks Martha, All info helps! I just saw this at the library sale, and it was so inexpensive I grabbed it. Now I have to figure out whether or not to use it.
  19. This is a question for all you math gurus. Dd did Saxon Algebra and is now doing Jacobs Geometry. The other day I found a school edition of Algebra and Trigonometry Book 2 by Dolciani and others published in 1984. The book and teacher manual were only $3.00 so I bought them. Is this a good book? Is it Algebra 2? I was planning on having her do Saxon Algebra 2, next, and I have that as well. Would the Dolciani book be better? TIA! I majored in philosophy, can you tell?:001_smile:
  20. Pam, :grouphug::grouphug: I hemorrhaged after losing a baby six years ago and it was an awful experience. I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope that your doctor can help somehow. In my case I was able to basically diagnose myself with a Luteal Phase Defect, but there were no expensive blood tests involved for me. Good luck. I hope things get better for you soon.
