  1. With my dh's Nook Color/android, he downloaded the Kindle app. and can get his Nook library or buy Kindle books. Can you just do the same with Kindle Fire - download the Nook app? I did that with my ipod touch and can get my Nook library on it. Surely Kindle would be able to do the same?
  2. Until 5/12, the Nook Color is $20 off (plus a free bookbag). I might upgrade from my first gen and get an N2A card to turn it into an android. This is what my husband did, and it became a tablet. It was very easy. On the other hand, I might just get the tablet. It is currently $199. With the N2A card + the Nook Color, it would be about $185, not a huge savings. Not sure what I'll do. The charger doesn't work in the outlet anymore, so I have to charge my Nook by computer, which is a pain. That gives me a great excuse to upgrade, don't you think?;)
  3. Dh is a college professor and political analyst. He has public speaking engagements fairly often, especially during an election year. He also teaches some on-line courses for a university and does workshops for the local social studies teachers in the public schools (on a federal grant). I guess I should say he has several jobs. He has a Ph.D. and two Masters.
  4. I think I've seen them all, and the Winona Ryder version is my favorite.
  5. The last scene in Castaway...when Tom Hanks goes to Helen Hunt's house...it's raining...she's married... aack! I sniffle just thinking about it! An Affair to Remember...last scene. You've Got Main...last scene. Little Women...Beth scene. I am not a big cryer in real life, but I am a sap with movies!
  6. Oh my, no, I cannot get everything done by 6. Ahhh...(that's me dreaming of having a "quitting time"!) I don't have littles anymore, so I have more running around for piano lessons, Latin study sessions, etc., but I don't have toys all over anymore either. I still can't get all that done. In fact, I never have been able to get it all done by 6! Honestly, we're lucky if we've eaten supper and everyone is where they need to be by 7. Of course, dh and I finally say hello to each other around 9 (slight exaggeration, sort of), so I guess it's a trade off. I hope you get some good advice. If you figure out how to get it all done, please let us know. I'd be interested to hear your schedule!:)
  7. My daughter uses Textfree and has never had a problem with it. She has a newer Ipod, so I don't know that this answers your question.
  8. I LOVE the name Oliver! We know an Oliver, and he is the sweetest little boy. I vote to change it. Btw, that photo of your twins is absolutely precious!:001_smile:
  9. My gyn said that unless it is the very beginning or very end, reschedule.
  10. I am not anti-gun, but I would be uncomfortable with this and would probably be the one to hem and haw because I would be put on the spot. When my kids were younger, going to the park was a time for them to get tired out, not hyped up. When they played games like the one you describe, they ended up being more aggressive than they were before they arrived, and it took them a while to calm down. I will say that I expected my kids to play at the park with outdoor voices and run around like kids will do and I greatly enjoyed watching them do this, usually while reading a book intermittently. For them to play with weapons with kids I don't know, that would mean I'd have to watch them every second, listen to a lot of screaming and shooting noises, then take home some aggressive kids. Not fun, when I was planning to have a nice day at the park. Do you see what I mean?
  11. Without reading the other replies, I would think Mom was warning her not to get hurt because it may be difficult to get medical attention in the mountainous area.
  12. I'm not trying to be antagonistic (really!), but I took a biology course last semester and researched hive intelligence. It is a common term.
  13. His stats note note a join date of March 2009, so isn't it possible that he has been lurking for a while, gleaning from the Afterschooling board? I have been a member here for years and check in a few times a week, yet I don't post much (but I do home school). Also, I know several people who would love to home school their kids but just can't at this time. They enjoy this board and get many ideas from all of you. As for Kumon, I didn't know what it was but just went to their website: A Kumon Program can be tailored for advanced students who need to be challenged and for students who need help catching up. Our ultimate goal is for all students to study above their grade level, so our academic enrichment program gives them ample opportunities to achieve more. I'm just saying that his post is not implausible. Perhaps my "troll radar" is not as developed as some of yours, but I think he could have been given the benefit of the doubt, at least until there was more evidence that something was amiss. OP, sorry I don't have advice. If it were me, I would probably wait it out tile the end of the year and also keep my eyes open for the qualities in my daughter that the teacher mentioned. It might be a learning experience for all.
  14. At a local college, students pay $40/hour for a tutor.
  15. Hmm...trying to think of someone I know that has not been out of the country and can't think of anyone. I'm not counting Canada since we live very close to the border. In my limited realm of experience, it seems that 78% would be pretty accurate.
  16. Okay, not quite as deep as some of the above, but every time I finish reading Little Women, I feel ready to take on the world! It makes me want to be a better person. :001_smile:
  17. In our co-op, the mom scheduled to be in the pre-k room helps the kids in the bathroom if they need it. They usually do not want help, but pre-ks are not always great at wiping #2 and sometimes will call for help. We also will help pull up pants if they get wound around. Our co-op is smallish, 16 families, and we are a very close-knit group, i.e. everyone knows each other well.
  18. It looks exactly like the abscess my son had. I can't see the degree of redness in the pic, but my son's was pretty red, then turned kind of white. His was in the area of a previous filling from a deep cavity. The dentist said he might need a root canal in that area if it comes back, but so far, he's been okay. I think he took an antibiotic. I hope it goes well for your daughter! Poor little one.
  19. I voted %. 12 would be the adjective modifying %. Now I'll search the responses to see if you gave the right answer somewhere!
