  1. You know, my tendency is to continue to read and post on political threads but I'm going to think about it. For the last year I've posted only at the curr. board and only occasionally lurked here. Since I've started posting on political threads I've gotten reprimanded and possibly alienated some nice people. I think I don't take political disagreements as seriously as other people because as a poli sci major I got used to getting into heated debates in class and then (usually) having to let it go outside of class. My best friend in college is now the treasurer for Hillary Clinton. We disagreed on just about all things political. We just didn't talk about it outside of class. I tend to compartmentalize it. But, I'd rather get along with people and staying away from political threads might be best because I really need this board for guidance in home schooling. Edited to add: Just to be totally clear, my point is not that other people shouldn't take politics so seriously. My point is that I have been too glib. I haven't taken it seriously enough.
  2. Now there's a head scratcher. Seriously. What color are most of your cold weather clothes? Earthy fall tones? Neutrals?
  3. Ahhh. Got it. I usually just get the floaters and some kind of weird eye stuff. I thought that was your "eye thing". One time I got the aura and, wow, so weird. I was also over 30 before I had it.
  4. I've had it with aura ONCE. I'll never forget it. Weirdest thing ever. You'd know.
  5. If its allowed to you, I've been enjoying almond milk by Blue Diamond.
  6. An NSAID like Advil and sleep in a dark room. That's the only thing that works for me. I'm fortunate that I can usually blunt the pain with Advil so that the pain is bearable until the headache is over.
  7. Wait, a second. You guys aren't even really talking about meat are you? :D Good points all around. Even if it were really about meat. My friend died at age 26 from CJD. His mother insists it was really vCJD from meat. The way the CDC swarmed the hospital after his dx certainly didn't help. So, yes, let's be careful about all kinds of meat.
  8. And I'd love to hear more responses. I was in bed last night thinking about how great it felt to get that first year under our belt and how I felt so good putting those books into storage. It was a very, "Ha! Done!", kind of feeling. Then I started to think about starting preschool this week with "the Baby" and I realized that I'd be dragging those books out again in a couple of years and felt...I don't know...worried. Worried that I wouldn't have the same enthusiasm for the subjects given that there was so much satisfaction in completing them. I'm feeling very relieved and buoyed by the experiences of others.
  9. Everyone defines morality differently. Honesty may not weigh as heavily on some moral scales as others. Or more weight may be given to certain types of honesty than others. I think there are people who are so turned off by the dishonesty inherent in politics that they wash their hands of the whole thing. I think there are some people who are resigned to the idea that true honesty is in short supply in political campaigns because they still want to be part of the process. In the whole campaign, say since January, I think there has been plenty of truth-stretching all around. That said, I think there has been only one really unforgivable lie and that was Obama's campaign painting Bill and Hillary Clinton as racists. I was really looking at him closely up until then. I'm no fan of the Clintons from way back but even I could see how completely unfair that was. That aside, I've let a lot of other things that I don't care for slide and I try to make sure that I don't let it go for my guy and not the other guy...but I'll admit, sometimes I have to really work on being disciplined about it.
  10. Sorry about your plight...I totally understand. We are The Aquitaine Academy. Mostly based on my fascination with Eleanor of Aquitaine. I even named my dd after her.
  11. Agreed on all points. However, after answering the question of Sarah Palin's credentials, whether agreement is reached or not, I still think its okay to ask, "Now can we discuss the credentials of [insert candidate]?"
  12. Thanks for posting this! I still see a lot of bias in this article although it certainly tries. It just seems that this reporter has gone into the research with a clear definition of "socialization" which is institutionalized socialization limited to one's immediate peer group. By that definition, home schooled kids probably aren't getting enough socialization. She also won't concede that home educated kids typically have knowledge above their grade level. They're just better test takers. And then the moral of the article is that sending your kids back to conventional school shows growth and a willingness on the part of the parent to finally let go.
  13. I have only been home schooling for a year and in that time I've ended up combining my 6yo and my 8yo on a couple of subjects. I also have a 3yo who I guess I will have to do separately. Is the enthusiasm there for teaching subjects *again*? I'm a little worried about that. Thanks for any insight.
  14. I'm sure you're right and that they were referencing that. I also know that come Monday, the lunch table guys will be chortling at how SNL nailed their portrayal of Christian home schoolers.
  15. I'm definitely agreeing with you. I'm just saying that I think there are people, and not a small number, who do not make a distinction. They will not know from the hair that FLDS was the target. They will just think Christians were the target. I live in the SF Bay Area and know lots of homeschoolers (though none that fit this description) but I also know lots of people who think we're all about like the people in the skit.
  16. I think its always been okay to poke fun at a president you don't like. Throughout history there are documented jabs made by the press or the opposing party at, I have to believe, every president. But, something has definitely been lost in our children. There's a tone in their voices. All knowing but not supported by knowledge. Braggadocios but not supported by achievement. I hope its just me waving my cane and not remembering what it was really like when I was young but...I don't know.
  17. Probably true. Unfortunately, I'm not sure they care enough to realize there's a difference in home schooling philosophies. Or care enough to realize that even Christian home schooling philosophies come in a wide range. They don't agree with it and are willing to paint it with a very broad brush. My husband works with a group of very liberal men who regularly spend the lunch hour bashing conservatives and Christians and the favorite target of all: conservative Christians. Of course, what they know about any of these groups isn't much. They think all Christian h/sers teach that dinosaurs and humans resided together at one time. They did not know about the young earth v. old earth debate and were surprised to find out that any debates of any nature took place among the "Religious Right". Their idea of h/s is not that far removed from what was depicted on SNL. Also, at this lunch table, non-Christian religions get carte blanche on their beliefs. Just to be clear, I'm not religious so I don't have a dog in this lunch table fight. Its also possible that this kind of attitude is only typical in my area but I live a continent away from NYC and it seems to be prevalent there too based on last night's SNL. The CPS comment worried me.
  18. Horrifying! So sorry you had to go through that. I've had a few of those myself. Glad everyone's okay.
