  1. It is just plain old 2 because g+4 and r-10 are numbers of marbles, just haven't filled in the amounts for the g and r yet. So if we just make up a number and fill it in, say g is 6 green marbles, so 10 total for the green part, and red is 15, so 5 total for the red part then 10 (green marbles)/5 (red marbles)=2 (times as many green as red).
  2. I heard a story about this on NPR the other day. The girls were on their way to a fairly religious and conservative school, but apparently not orthodox enough for these men. It seems like there is no end to the ways people can hate each other in the name of religion. What was most bothersome to me was that these were young girls that were being spit on and abused. It didn't seem like a wide spread issue in the story that I heard. More of the focus was on the ultra-orthodox and their actions then on women in general in Israel. Maybe I missed how pervasive the issue is.
  3. Don't know if you have ever heard of TED talks but here is a little talk by a math professor that does some of the Teaching Company courses as well. He thinks statistics is really important.
  4. Soooo adorable! Well...you should start a thread and post a picture. Can never have too many cute baby threads.
  5. Don't have an opinion about this documentary regarding the medical systemin the US one way or the other, so not posting it to press an agenda, just to bring up some interesting ideas relative to this discussion. http://www.indiegogo.com/escapefire I do like Dr. Weil who has a role in it.
  6. Complete as far as a spine, but a little dry for us - All American History.
  7. Well, at least he doesn't have the track glued to the baby...that is where I was expecting the conversation to go. Nail polish is what I have always heard but it didn't work for me the other day. I just had to wait a few days for it to wear off.
  8. A dried flower arrangement/wreath kind of thing that needs some serious dusting, and an old, really adorable print of a young boy and girl on a bench with the boy, very shyly, giving the girl a bouquet of flowers. My husband framed it in shop class when he was in junior high. We don't have a headboard, just a lot of pillows propped up and the picture and flowers are fairly low on the wall. The walls are all still the same white they were when the house was built.
  9. You skipped into the technicalities so fast I almost lost the woohoo!! congratulations!! moment. Here's hoping you are much further along.
  10. Congratulations! What a wonderful story with such a happy ending.
  11. No more teaching to the test. I was amazed when I watched the documentary about the Finnish school system how unimportant the testing was. Really just a tool for the teacher to find holes to focus on for individual kids. Group kids by ability instead of age. How to implement is a little bit of a logistical nightmare but there has to be a way. Give teachers more autonomy to research and use the curriculum they like best and let them teach. Get rid of textbook writer monopoly and control. Use those little boxes in the front of the textbook about who used the book from year to year and what condition it was in. There is no need to spend so much money on new books every single year. Let subject experts review the materials and make sure they are up to date. Hire experts with a teaching certificate instead of education school majors, even at the lowest grades. Get rid of anything that is not purely academic. It requires a whole new mindset in communities and families to watch out for and take care of children but I think the social worker role interferes too much with teaching time and the school's purpose to educate. Get rid of busing and other social engineering programs. Give parents total choice over where their kids attend. Start school a little later in the morning and limit home work to lengthy writing assignments or such that can't be finished in class. Give kids free time in the afternoon and evening to be with family or pursue hobbies or just play. Year round school with small breaks sprinkled throughout. School uniforms and a strict and enforced set of expectations for behavior. Put the responsibility to learn back on the parents and students. Get rid of "college prep" mindsets and just give everyone a good solid education. I think that, irrespective of what you are going to do to make money as an adult, you need to be well educated. No teacher tenure. Pay incentives for doing well, just like any other job.
  12. Hey, me too. It never occurred to me until I read this thread that it was a scam. I didn't click on anything, fortunately I guess. There was a package with the right tracking number that was supposed to be delivered but the Amazon email said they couldn't deliver it because it couldn't be left. I called UPS because they always leave packages without a signature. They said the package was out for delivery and it did come about an hour later. They had all the right information. Something at Amazon was hacked? I am off to check the news now.
  13. We love that movie (see my signature :) ) but there are some iffy parts. We know where they are though and just have younger people cover their ears or turn away...it depends on what bothers you the most. Violence? Language? The scene that bothers me the most (well, two of them actually) are the "torture" scene and the sword fight between the 6 fingered man and Inigo Montoya near the end. I just asked my 12 year old and he said the things he recalls are the torture chamber, the Rats of Unusual Size attacking Wesley and the screaming eels.
  14. We have the usual round up of friends that will be here at our house. Spending New Year's Eve with them and a table full of junk food and board games is one of our favorite traditions.
  15. When the kids were all young my mom "made" towels for them. The towels were all white but she would put a different color ribbon or trim on them so they could be bleached, but we could still tell who left their towel on the floor. She made pillow cases with the same trim as well. I bought towels at Walmart (and some at Bed, Bath and Beyond) and they shredded quickly but I have some good towels that I bought 10 years ago and they are still looking good. I have some really good ones that I got from my mother-in-law's house when she passed away and they are hanging in my bathroom right now. They have to be 20 years old.
  16. Ask the last person out the door to turn off the lights...fire myself and everyone else in the department.
  17. We bought a dozen of the white Corelle bowls years ago and they are still going strong and look like new. We use them all the time. I got them at Walmart. I was also going to suggest World Market.
  18. My grandpa just died a couple of years ago and lived to 98. All he wanted was company and some chocolate. He really liked chocolate. I don't think I will be any different (hopefully not grumpy and crotchety :) ) when I am old and I already just want friends and family and fun and happiness for gifts. I am tired of dusting, cleaning and sorting stuff. And hopefully there will be grandkids by then, ahem...
  19. :iagree: I actually use it quite a bit for random information and for jumping off points which makes me think I ought to donate - just never have. There is always something more important to do with the money.l
  20.:lol: We never did Santa because the lies were just too hard to keep straight :D
  21. I keep trying to buy cute or functional bags and keep giving them away. I wear pants with pockets - keys and card in one, cell phone in the other. I hate having to keep track of a bag so it won't get lost or stolen and I don't carry anything besides financial stuff anyway. I have a tiny purse with lots of card slots and I leave it in the center console in my car and just take what I need in my pocket into the store.
  22. We pay a ridiculous amount for our landline with caller id and such but I still won't get rid of it because of 911. The 911 operator can locate a land line geographically but can't, as far as I understand, with a cell phone or other service. We also have a plain old phone plugged directly into the wall jack so when the power is out we still have phone service.
  23. Vuitton - it looks roomier, more comfortable to carry and like it would go with more outfits. The Hermes one looks stiff and narrow and hard to get into - hard to get to things in the bottom.
  24. I am so sorry. The same thing happened with my family when my grandparents died. Everyone just sort of scattered... :grouphug:
