  1. I don't know the answer but feel the same way - often! I get the serious munchies in the evening. I sometimes think it is because I am tired or wound up and eating has been a way to boost my energy with carbs or forget about my problems. So, bump for you and hopefully answers for both of us. :)
  2. Because you are seeing the world through normal compassionate eyes. :grouphug: He doesn't think he did anything wrong - it is always someone else's fault He probably truly doesn't remember the things he did (which was a weird thing to come to grips with about narcissism) And it is all about window dressing and making him look good, never about a real relationship Narcissists have a way of making you feel like the crazy one. :grouphug: eta: I am sure you know this but just a reminder that forgive doesn't mean trust him or let him in, EVER. Forgiving is about your peace - turning it over to Heavenly Father to be the judge. I hope you can somehow find that peace and get him out of your head once and for all. :grouphug:
  3. For us that happens when they get too much sun and/or not enough water.
  4. Our girl's camp is the end of July and I am a 2nd year tent mom. There are about 150 girls at our camp and 10 of them are in my group. Tent mom is a pretty easy job, mostly just making sure the girls get where they need to go, getting everyone in bed and getting their "beds" made and campsite cleaned up in the morning. We sleep on tent pads under the stars. Oh, and making sure there is NO candy under their pillow - we have bears! There's a bear! Where! Over there!... The buddy system sounds fun. The biggest problem at our camp is the cliquishness. I had the girls at my house last night to make some camp stuff and they spent quite a bit of time out on the trampoline which seemed to cement their group friendship a little bit. We didn't finish the flag and all but the goal was mostly to get them to be better friends so hopefully we are good. I've been going to camp in various capacities for 13 years and I still love love love it.
  5. This is the Church history manual used by college age students at LDS institutes and at BYU. You can read it for free online. http://www.lds.org/manual/church-history-in-the-fulness-of-times-student-manual?lang=eng It makes me laugh but there is actually a Wikipedia page with the history of the Church in Oklahoma...maybe you recognize some of the names?
  6. :grouphug: So sorry. We try to do the Pollyanna thing and say, well at least we had the money saved up that we could use to fix the tire and all. Sometimes it makes me feel better, sometimes not :glare::001_smile: Hope you find a way to get the curriculum sooner rather than later.
  7. Seriously, I was at the temple last night and ALL I could think about is you people and this thread. Not good.
  8. Adam and Eve were in a state of innocence and not fully mortal so when they chose to become mortal and sin and death entered the world they "fell" from this state to a world of pain and suffering and choices between good and evil. More than just Adam and Eve fell - the world became a fallen and sinful place - falling further away from our Heavenly Father so we would have to seek for Him and learn to choose Him without His presence.
  9. Everyone else has more than adequately answered your question but I just wanted to add a few comments about the article. He refers to Romans 5:12 as indicating Adam sinned - the LDS Church teaches that Adam did not sin but simply transgressed a rule, much like the crossing the street analogy mentioned above. Here is the full scripture and the ones following: 12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. It says sin entered into the world because of Adam, in verse 12, not that Adam sinned and then in 14 refers to what Adam did as a transgression. Adam had a choice to live a higher principle, and the one we would say is central to the plan, what Heavenly Father's plan is all about - mortal bodies and families - or to keep a rule. Adam and Eve chose the break the rule to fulfill the purpose of mortal life. The Fall was not a surprise and Jesus Christ was the first born and our Savior from the very beginning. It was always part of the plan, not a hastily implemented fix. This quote kind of bugs me - In the meantime, one important truth must be grasped as we ponder the relationship between Mormonism and the Christian faith: Mormons use our vocabulary but not our dictionary. Keeping this first principle in mind will aid you in seeing through the Christian veneer of Mormonism. We don't agree on the meaning of the words but, like the OP and the conversation here (most of the conversations here!) we could try to understand each other's definition instead of bashing.
  10. We did and we will. One graduated college, one in college, one finished cosmetology school and one starting high school in a couple years.
  11. Do it in reverse - move the things you absolutely have to keep (family heirlooms, current school supplies) to an off limits area and hire an estate auction company to come in and give you an estimate of what they will take, what will sell, how much etc. It seems like the only way to just get it done. Any thing else involves hours of sorting and hundreds of trips to the dump and charities. It is what we did when my father in law passed away. I suppose they would do it for living people also :)
  12. Personally I prefer big, memorable adventures and voted for the Chicago trip. If the oldest is 18 this may be your last vacation together and I would do something out of the ordinary. All of the other trips seemed kind of like more of what you always do. But that is me and maybe not what you are looking for in a vacation. Why won't you need passports for Vancouver (which would be my 2nd choice)?
  13. Well hopefully it is just someone shooting at animals in the woods or having fun playing with guns and target practice or something. Lots of things sound like guns shots but we had a shooting not far from us a few years ago and it sounded distinctive and scary. I am sorry you are home alone and listening to this. Maybe since you called the police will come by your house and let you know what is going on. :grouphug: eta: Didn't realize you are in the east and it is already late and dark - maybe some dumb party people shooting at random stuff? I hope you get some answers soon. Maybe call the sheriff back if you don't hear from them and see if they can tell you what they found? Otherwise I creep myself out sometimes and it helps to turn the lights off in the house so no one can see in, even when I know it is fine.
  14. I understand that this particular book is just your jumping off point for a discussion about how to choose books and watch out for bias but I did want to mention that the book is 1) not a picture book but a chapter book for middle grades, and 2) not as biased or untruthful as you seem to think it is. It is not great literature but is a basic story about how a young girl in a difficult situation tries to maintain her humanity and cope with her life. As far as I can tell, Alice Mead has no horse in this race and she did have the book reviewed by this man: Steven L. Burg is a professor and chair of the department of politics at Brandeis University. His most book, co-authored with Paul S. Shoup, The War in Bosnia-Herzegovina: Ethnic Conflict and International Intervention (M.E. Sharpe, 1999), was awarded the 2000 Ralph J. Bunche Prize of the American Political Science Association for "the best scholarly work in political science which explores the phenomenon of ethnic and cultural pluralism." I think if you are Serbian you might not love this book as much as someone who is Albanian but it does show that both sides are human - the main characters best friend is Serbian and it explores the relationship between the two families. And on this board I think you can probably find someone who has a personal connection to just about everything - we have some friends for whom this is very real and very much in line with what was written in the book. That is what prompted me to respond - more so than the ideas of how to detect bias. Which leads to the general topic - how to figure out the bias in a book and counteract it or, if it isn't a personal issue, how to find both sides of the issue. Before my kids are old enough to do this on their own I spend time reading here, reading book reviews, reading authors biographies, checking encyclopedia entries, and searching the internet. We try to read several books on a subject as the kids get older, research news stories and scan through the internet for strong opinions on either side of an issue. I don't generally pre-read but as things come up we discuss how it fits with what we know, do a little research if it seems contrary to what we have already read, and sometimes have our opinion on the matter changed completely :) For older kids we like Critical Thinking in US History and other books of that type to help us think critically and examine both sides. I think the research, critical thinking, and discussion are some of my favorite parts of a classical education. And thank heavens for the internet! Our library is useless and I have no idea how we would research this stuff otherwise.
  15. It was a very bittersweet and melancholy feeling when my older children started going off on their own. It has taken a few years to get used to it. My first three were born within three years and it was instant family and we always went everywhere, did everything together. There is a gap of 9 years until my youngest and I knew the day would come when he would kind of be an only child but when it started to happen it was really hard. The last time all four of my kids were in the same room was September 2009. The next time will be after February 2013. I love what my kids are doing and where they are going but it is hard to adjust to the idea of "family" living separate lives. You can't go back and each season has its own fun and joys but this thread reminded me how much I miss those days when we were all together. :tongue_smilie: Probably shouldn't have opened this thread...:)
  16. What a handsome little man and what a face full of personality and fun! Congratulations!!
  17. I am pretty sure you are speaking English but beyond that your words make absolutely no sense to me. Now I will go back and read the rest of the answers and see what in the world this is about. I was born in 1961 in the United States.
  18. 111 pages - No real chapters. It is written as a journal with dates. January 2nd, 1285 - December 28th, 1285 goes to page 89. The rest of the pages are about his world - weapons, life as a page etc.
  19. That was our experience when we were going through this for the first time - the woman at the university said they had a lot of problems with inflated mommy grades that didn't match the SAT/ACT test results. She wanted to see genuine academic courses (no basket weaving) with grades that lined up with test scores to be able to trust the transcript.
  20. A child of a friend had Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (coxsackievirus) recently. She had a fever and then broke out in blisters. There is an unusual strain of it going around. http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6112a5.htm Maybe not your dds problem but thought I would post this just in case. You can google images of the blisters to see if they look similar. The friends doctor told her to keep away from very young children but otherwise it would just run its course - no treatment. The blisters hurt a little but weren't a huge problem. They did not itch.
  21. We used their outlining books. We also have quite a few of the games - fun way to reinforce learning.
  22. Thanks for the additional information. Didn't see any of that detail in the 3 or 4 stories I read.
  23. I searched the news stories about this, thinking there has to be more to the story. I can't find anything. The headline should be about the worthless judge (and how he is about to be fired for incompetence!). And where are the girls parents? The story says they divorced and moved away? Leaving their underage children to fend for themselves? There is are two websites trying to help here - change.org with a petition to have the charges overturned, and helpdiantran.com, which is raising money for her. I hope she and her siblings aren't separated because of this. The judge is totally lacking in any common sense. Love this line from him: "If you let one run loose, what are you gonna' do with the rest of 'em?," said Judge Lanny Moriarty. "Let them go too? A little stay in the jail for one night is not a death sentence."
  24. The forum scrolls by the last post time so if you want to keep something at the top of the list where more people will see it, you need to bump it up. You do it by posting to the thread and just using the word bump in the post. There is also a New Posts tab and bumping a thread will also keep it on the front page of that search so people will see it.
